Never change, /sci/.

Hey man, we're all just like, chemicals man.
>>7750073
They're just a protein with DNA in them mate. :^)
>>7750073
life is a spectrum, from mere chemistry as the most primitive, to self awareness as the most evolved (as far as we are aware)
>>7750089
>just chemicals man
just like humans then.
This shit always made me argue with my biology teachers.
define "live"
I MEAN
>>7750156
>most evolved
What do you mean by this? Humans are actually very unevolved. Other species like Polychaos dubium, an amoeboid, has a genome that has in its DNA, 670 billion base pairs, 200 times larger than the human genome. How and why you ask? Because it has evolved a great deal more than humans have. All that extra DNA isn't even used, but some may be used when the right environment trigger occurs. I'd say that Polychaos dubium is far more evolved than humans will ever be. Though some of those numbers may be in dispute, there are 1000s of other species that have a great many more base pairs than humans.

wtf are you talking about they are infectious proteins faggot
>>7750197
"infectious proteins" is not a proper explanation.

>they live

Seriously....
They aren't fully alive. They are parasitic drones.
I suppose viruses are the closest thing to aliens as it gets on Earth. Well, besides Mexicans.
>>7750206
>they live
no they dont
>heat that kills bacteria and virii can't kill them
proteins can be incredibly heat resistant, dumbass. just look at cerulide enterotoxin and other the proteins in extremophiles
>they don't reproduce meotically or mitotically
why would they, theyre fucking chains of amino acids
>they're alive
says who faggot
>they don't have cell walls or nucleii
theyre fucking proteins

the induce comformational changes in similar proteins
read a fucking book

>>7750073
I treat them as automatons with a 'genetic' set of instructions.
>>7750225
Are you talking about prions or viruses?
And why are you making multiple threads about the same thing?
>>7750225
An automated machine makes cars, does that mean it's alive?
>>7750307
Prions. Viruses are well known and can also easily be killed a lot easier than your regular mammalian cell with higher temperatures or extremes in pH.
>why are you making multiple threads about the same thing?
What do you mean? I havent made a single thread on /sci/ in years and I'm just replying to posts.
>>7750309
Bad analogy. Prions are organic molecules. Automated machines are also made by other entities. Prions are a random occurence unless they were made in some lab somewhere.
>>7750358
prions are viruses though, just with different structure
viruses are made of proteins too, but they are just assembled differently
prions are extremely advanced viruses, unlike anything else, really
>>7750156
most evolved =/= most advanced
>>7750372
No, they aren't.
They're nothing like viruses. A virus is a load of proteins all bundled up in a shell.
A prion is just a single misfolded protein.
>>7750437
>A virus is DNA or RNA all bundled up in a PROTEIN COAT.
ftfy

I used to argue about this in high school.

>>7750159
humans have the ability to shitpost, id liketo see a virus do that.
>>7750073
the solution is to stop arbitrarily defining life based on our own behavior and look at things in terms of complexity
>im right
>youre wrong
this fucking debate again. this is worse than listening to people arguing about abortion
I have trouble drawing the line of "life" below the virus. I define life as using DNA (software) and proteins (hardware) in a metabolic pursuit. Viruses have the first two items, but don't metabolize. I pretty much agree with the other poster who simply characterized them as a parasitic structure.

in germany children learn that viruses are not alive because you cant kill them like bacteria
>>7750528
god dammit trang, go back to fucking china
>>7751153
Do molecular virology and then get a PhD in Epidemiology.
>>7751413
Just because you can't killed them doesn't mean they're not alive. We don't know how to kill them its the technical answer. Viruses are harder to kill than bacteria. We do know how to kill some viruses but others are just big assholes.
>>7750769
No that is not me.
>>7750309
can an automated machine that makes cars make automated machines that makes cars?

>>7750073
They're the bridge between living and non-living
>>7750437
yes they are.
there is no such fucking thing as proteins which infect other proteins,
that is beyond fucking retarded, holy fucking shit. you got to be kidding me. its literally the dumbest thing they could possibly come up with as an explanation for shit they cant figure out.
somewhere along the line a virus involved, or it might even be a more advanced organism. whatever it is, it's completely unknown, and the more investigative work that is done, the more it just scares the fucking shit out of science.
you really have no idea how major of an issue this whole 'prion' thing is

yeah okay m8
>>7750073
It does not actually reproduce itself. It uses single celled organisms which are capable of doing that to perform that function.
It is basically the biological equivalent of a chain email or pyramid scheme. It's just information structured in a way that compels the host organism to spread it.
