if you go to great clips or other misc hair cutting chain, get the oldest person in there. they're almost always people who used to own their own salon and got tired of the business aspect. i have really long hair and got the best trim ever from this old dude who closed his salon. had me stand up so he could cut my hair as close to my body as possible all around so i got an even cut. first time in my life someone did it like that.

Number 3 guard, half on sides, back. Number 4 guard to blend, if needs be, use a razor to take some weight off the blend.
I then use scissors on the upper sides, back and top of head.
