/r9k/ is mostly shit right now. The fastest threads are nearly all garbage (race bait, threads where OP claims to be a woman, gay ERP threads, etc.). Awful fast threads do not ruin a board as long as they do not prevent anything else from getting replies, but generally any threads that require effort or thought to reply to do pretty poorly.
Here are some basic solutions to this:
1) Bump threads you think are good. This is the most important thing to do. If you see a thread and think it's clever or it looks like some effort went into creating it, please bump it. If somebody posts lengthy greentext then, unless it's obvious garbage, bump the thread even if you don't read it. If you have nothing to say that's fine, as long as a thread you like is at page 7 or 8 you should try to get it to page 1. A slow thread does not stay slow forever, and each time a thread goes to page 1 it has a chance to gain momentum and enjoy speed for a little while. Do not give up on something because it seems dead, most of the catalog seems dead.
2) Do not flame bad threads. Threads like >>28019373 and fembot feels threads do so well in large part because people flame them. Everybody who has browsed here for two weeks has seen somebody say that women cannot be robots, and almost everybody is familiar with the logic behind that statement. Stop participating in five year old flame wars that only shit up the board by keeping absolute garbage at the front page. Posting roulettes is even worse, as the roulette can be easily hidden and all the replies to it are also hidden, and they pretty much keep the thread on autobump because a lot of fucking idiots here don't know or care what sage is. Ignore or filter bad threads.
3) Try using the catalog. It can be fun to see how threads have evolved, but you are much more likely to find decent OPs on /r9k/ using the catalog because most things that stick to the first page are damn near awful.
Discuss and post suggestions for making /r9k/ great again.

Many of the people pretending to be women are not women or they've been on image boards long enough that they can at the very least quickly identify and ignore gore. Spamming gore or repulsive pornography, especially if you reply to everybody, is very annoying and will probably have an impact, but it is not insurmountable. You are quite likely, if you are obnoxious enough, to lead people to make several threads on the topic you hate so they can avoid you. And honestly you can probably spend your time better anyways.
Also, similar things apply to race bait threads. It's best to ignore them as well.

I think some women probably did originally come to /r9k/ to argue with misogynists, but they're a small minority.
Misogyny is a vital defense mechanism for /r9k/ as long as robot maintains any connotation of social misfit or sexually unwanted loner. I'm not opposed to misogyny, but I dislike reposts, and women hate threads aren't that far off from YLYL threads in terms of people dumping the same unoriginal content over and over again. I used to see a lot more insightful, intelligent misogyny here several years ago, but in general I think /r9k/ has gotten younger and dumber over the years.

Shaming can help for many of them but not all of them. There are certainly going to be people who don't give a shit about being "fitting into" a board, and self moderation won't do much to change them. Some men are going to try to get a girlfriend on /r9k/ and continue to do their pathetic bullshit, and some girls are going to vie for their attention. If they're trying to meet up you can report them, but /r9k/ barely has mods now. Just ignore threads posted by people claiming to be female and you can ignore most of it.
