One major factor - when I was young and using the internet 1997-2003 or so, most politicans seemed to be mostly clueless about the internet and its value. There was a sense online that things really were free, and you could get away with practically anything (and there was nothing wrong with this, after all). If something was offensive to me, it expanded my awareness - I didn't immediately seek to censor it. Back then we had real sense of how quickly the government and moral crusaders would seek to gain control of the internet.
It's only going to get worse, too. With all these revenge porn laws and various feminist and government initiatives to stifle free speech. Things may not have actually been that free back then, but they FELT free.

I was a social autist even when I was younger, but I never shined alongside other autists online like I could have because I was too scared that I would be rejected even by them.
This is one of the only things I truly feel like I missed. Reading stories of the happiness the internet used to give other people kills me inside, their tight-knit communities they were apart of, the old shitty games they played and had fun together on, all the in-jokes that little groups created, IRC channels, forums, shittiest quality anime they could find, making shitty drawings and animations to share with friends who done the same, and the sense of community they had.
There's nothing resembling that left. Everything has changed and now the internet isn't anywhere near as fun as what it used to be.
