they'll offer actual criticism. All you get from r9k are under-achievers who doodle in school and are content with the compliments they get on their mediocre abilities.
You may find their needling your work to be uncomfortable and unpleasant, but if you truly want to be get better, you'll suck it up and use it as encouragement in areas you could improve instead of sulking for not being great already.

>>27352663
He has a point though anon, if you seriously practice and develop your skill you'll end up being at least good. It's true, you just have to actually put the time and effort in. I've seen really shit people become as far as really good after practicing for 2 to 3 years.
Quite obviously though, you can't be a cuck who expects to magically git gud. Drawing is mostly about recreating your mind's idea, and the "trick" is to train your hand to reproduce what you "see".

YOU are one of the guys who draw good shit, >>27352423 were not refering to you at all
these are all so pleasant to look at.
Honestly, if you want to pursue art to earn your bread, then yes, I suggest you get your ass over to /ic/ and take their criticism, which I warn will not be kind. Art is competitive and in low demand, so you have to git gud or else pick another job.
But if you're just an amateur who wants to enjoy himself, really, the bar is set to how much fun you like to have. There is a certain charm in the childlike-ness of amateur art that I can appreciate.
pic related, this would get torn up over at /ic/ and for good reason because its shit is all fucked up. But goddamn is it pleasant to look at.
>>27352730

>>27352741
Thanks, *thumbs up*
Word of advice to anyone in this thread.
Stick with pen for a while and learn to work with your mistakes instead of constantly erasing. It's harder but it'll make progressing easier when you get back to using pencil.
Am i the next da Vinci?
>>27352741
>>27352809
Yep, I wasn't referring to you, I think you actually have some good ability. I was actually referring to the kids who just don't even know how to git gud, if you know what I mean.
It's just really sad to see people drawing and making the same mistakes over and over, kinda like OP, who is trying too hard to stick to a "style" instead of correcting her fuck ups. Drawing is "not hard", but you have to at least be smart about it if you want to surpass yourself, you know what I mean anon?
It's just that there was some really bad shit being posted here that made me cringe really bad. I don't even think you should call yourself a /drawfag/ if you're not actually doing your fucking best and being intelligent about it. There's a gigantic difference between just drawing and expecting to git gud, and then drawing and analyzing where you've gone wrong. What with all the shit available online to help you understand where you're fucking up too.
It's just really fucking sad.
>>27351820
>>27351659
>>27352423
I mean, those are the kind of drawings I do for fun. I do more serious stuff too
>>27353029
Yo, kinda sad that the drawing you do for fun are actually better though. I mean, your serious drawing is alright, but definitely way too smudged and it lacks personality as fuck. I'd advise you to find at least a middle ground where you're both having fun and being serious, you know what I mean anon? Much like playing an instrument, being good at drawing is not just about having good skill, it's also about BEING YOURSELF. If you'll excuse my meme.
>>27353068
I get what you mean. it's a figure drawing class, and it was pretty small so it got kinda muddied. Thanks for the feedback tho!
>>27353010
I completely understand and agree with you
But I disagree when you say that drawing is "not hard", it IS hard until it gets somehow "easier" after a while...
until there... there's a long way (of course, some people improve faster or slower but everyone can get there)
>>27353100
Fair enough, I mean, if it was a figure drawing class I guess you kinda gravitate towards a bland figure representation style. That one you just posted looks better just by not being muddied, I think you might benefit from trying to mix your laid back "just having fun" style with your more traditional drawing, I think you might come up with something pretty damn fine if you do.
And don't mention it anon, I actually enjoy giving people feedback and love seeing some potential coming true. I've helped a lot of friends through it and it's some real deal satisfaction to see someone become fucking proud of themselves.
Feels good man.
I draw but I have no method at all and I'm really bad
They can be funny sometimes though
>>27352808
Nowadays it's almost impossible to make a futuristic war suit that doesn't look generic at all. I did that one not thinking in any though.
>>27353166
Yeah well, I did say "not hard" with quotations because, in all honesty, it can be hard to draw everyday unless you're really fucking serious about it and enjoy it, you know what I mean? I mean, it IS hard, but it's "not hard". So all in all, we end up agreeing with each other anon. Mostly because that's how it fucking goes anyway.
Also, yeah, very true, some people experience little to no struggle in getting good, and I understand how it can be frustrating for others who have to try way harder just to get to a similar level. I guess I'm "privileged" for never having experienced that struggle. Probably why I said it wasn't hard. I mean, it is hard, but then again, if you enjoy it and you can easily overcome your difficulties it seems way simpler than it might for an average anon.sorry for the humblebrag, I kinda felt like sharing a bit of my experience on it, I know it can be shit when people tell you that drawing is "not hard" when you try really hard to be good. But seriously, it's not so hard that some people won't be able to git gud.
Did this at a coffee shop yesterday, added feather that needs to be finished cuz hipster chicks love that shit.
Have you tried drawing Skulls, Landscapes, in Charcoal or Marker?
I try not to dwell too long on any single pose or style, or even subject or I stagnate and start to get worse.
A lot of people start to get good at a single style and they stick with it because they're tired of fucking up and then never progress. Give yourself fuck ups, that's why Marker/Pen is great. No eraser so if you screw up gotta restart, so you restart a lot
>>27353196
Probably more r9k appropriate than Ainsely
>>27353276
Very very true, I actually used to draw a lot with a pen and that probably contributed a lot (now that I think about it), this anon has good advice for ya'll kiddos trying to make it.
>>27353270
No problem
I'm on the other hand... I've studied and all that shit but I'm not really good even with practice and it is too damn frustratingto the point I stopped completely for about 2 years.
recently, I've be drawing again... it is still bad but now I know what to do, what is wrong and what to do to improve. I still commit many mistakes and it's a constant fight: my brain does good art and is skilled as fuck but my hands can't keep up, so I never grow up to the best of my abilities.
I hope to change it someday soon, since NOW I am taking art seriously and I'm seeing much improvement in a short amount of time that I couldn't reach in years.
>and, apparently, I'm a fucking retard who don't know how to spoiler shit
>>27353417
Anon, I know I'm not your mom or dad or anything, but I'm actually really fucking proud of you right now. Brings a little tear to my eye to see an inspired anon not backing down. Seriously, that improvement you're seeing will actually keep up if you continue taking it seriously. Feels good to see people fighting the good fight, really. Also, remember that, sometimes, the medium you're working with is not "ideal" for yourself. Sometimes it's a good idea to try a different pencil or maybe even some paint instead, really. Changes perspectives and shit and really helps you find yourself.
You will get there anon, I have faith, you sound really inspired and determined.
space man
>>27353501
Thanks bro, it means a lot
I've spent my whole life doing traditional art and, in about 3 months into digital art, things finally seen to be getting "there"... drawing is not as enjoyable to me anymore because a lot of shit happened but I can't see my life without it anymore, you know? It's not something I can chose to free myself of, it is just there for me and with me forever. So I rely on others' ideas and do my drawings, someday I will start doing things for myself again, who knows? But I enjoy that I can be able to improve even in these conditions.
As you, I also like to give advice to people and seeing how good they can get, because everyone is capable of so many things with the right push.
>>27353417
I took a five year hiatus until I went to Paris and got back into Art, and I'm better for it. Sometimes you hit a brick wall and need life experiences to give you a new insight/point of view.
I'm oneof those who had to work really hard, and kept falling back and having to try again. To this day what I draw is half random chance, I just operate by one rule: If you can draw it once you can draw it again.
I'll perfect a face then fuck the body and have to change the head position and don't want to sacrifice that face, and the whole thing will suffer and my talent. Better to erase and re-do, maybe do some practice ones beforehand.
And don't compare your progress with other peoples, like other Anon said some people are just wired for it. Compare your new stuff to your old stuff

I'm alright at drawing from reference, but whenever I have to make something up myself ( even when I use references for those images ) I'm so wildly inconsistent, it just made me mad. I'm doing different things these days

>Pretty damn good, though the skulls are messing with me anon, you seem to be good at digital painting, wish you'd work a bit more on your actual drawing and perception of shape.
Yeah, I've been trying to get good for a decent amount of time now. I was pretty convinced that if I put in enough time / do enough work I'd get good enough ( which is what most "professionals" keep saying ) but I never really discovered the trick. No matter how many times I practice drawing a thing, it's always a complete guess whether or not the next time I'll be able to draw it properly. Sometimes I still paint some stuff for fun though.
Sometimes I enjoy going full anal on just drawing fairly basic stuff in perspective with "correct" basic values; kind of like I'm a human 3D modeling program. Putting on some music and just drawing perspective lines is zen as shit

There's no tracing going on in my image; I haven't generated an image using 3D software. I just used basic perspective / shading rules to make that image. No reference at all, just making lines and measuring things accurately

do the white splashes represent you cumming on the anime girl you've outlined on the left
>>27356248
Yeah, everything in that image was just me drawing lines and blocking in values in Photoshop. It's not really hard or anything, it's just very tedious. But since it requires so little brainpower it can be relaxing, in its own way
>>27356398
yes ofc, how did you guess?
I draw anime girls like a fucking chump
>>27356428
Who wouldn't want to draw anime girls?
>spend the last four years of my life drawing mlp fanart
Why the fuck am I so retarded I could have spent the time learning to draw anything else. Now I'm stuck with four years of progress that I can't show to anyone or build off of to anywhere else other than furry art.
>>27356416
you might achieve faster results if you just used a 3d modeling program since you seem to be doing manually a lot of stuff that these programs do automatically. i dunno though. 3d modeling has its own problems and pains in the ass so if you're enjoying what you're doing maybe it's not worth it
>>27356529
You could always start drawing porn and sell it to horny fucks
>>27356562
>you might achieve faster results if you just used a 3d modeling program
lol yes, but speed wasn't the point. It's just doodling in perspective, to see if I could do it manually.
I actually started messing around in Zbrush since a few weeks. It's pretty fun, I think I actually like it better than just drawing on flat surfaces. I thought it was going pretty well, but when I showed it to some people for feedback they absolutely slammed the shit out of it. I knew it wasn't good, but I'm not going to lie, I didn't think it was THAT bad for a first attempt at a humanoid sculpt.
Kinda put me off desu. Ah well. Here's the sculpt if you want to see the trainwreck, I'm anonymous here anyway so who gives a shit
>>27355738
looks awesome, anon
>>27356587
I want to make something I can be proud of. Pony porn would be another step away from that.
something i made after watching dallas buyers club
>>27356703
did you post it in /3/? /3/ is very harsh in my experience. i have yet to post anything i've made there as i know it will get instantly shat on, and often not in any constructive way. anyway, that looks better than anything i've made in zbrush so far. zbrush is a very uncomfortable program for me, i feel like i need to export my model and look at it in maya to actually get a real sense of what my model looks like (half the time i do so i notice glaring issues that escaped my detection in zbrush). on the other hand it has some very nice features. i just wish the interface was easier to use and more in line with other 3d programs. also is it just me or does framerate go to shit when you zoom in on a model? might just be my shit computer
>>27356703
You should consider using a program like Marvelous Designer for clothing, and then just import the exported file over to zbrush for editing.
>>27346935
here have ho
>>27354901
i puke a little bit in my mouth
>>27354861
> I do wish you'd have some sort of definition of borders though, it seems to lack a certain notion of realism because of it
Don't know why I didn't did harder borders like pic related on that one. I guess I gave it a very soft shape even in non-organic areas. Thanks for the tip though.
>>27356361
SMGs are love. SMGs are life.
i have the AIDS
>>27356846
No, I asked people in real life. I know some people who are actual 3D modelers for a living and whatnot.
As for using Zbrush, overcoming the UI really isn't as hard once you just commit to learning it. I was really not looking forward to it, but just watch some essentials tutorials on YouTube and you'll be surprised. I think I've put around ~ 25 hours into Zbrush now and when I went back to Maya for something else, I constantly tried to use the Zbrush "controls". They're actually pretty good when you figure 'em out.
If you're having trouble with your meshes, all I can say is to keep your polys low, and just really gradually work your way up. If you're dynameshing at 128 resolution from the get-go you're gonna have a bad time
>>27356850
Yeah, I've come across Marvelous Designer. Thinking of picking it up, but man, actually learning how clothing's sown / stitched together sounds tricky as fuck. I guess I should just give it a go once and do a couple of follow-along tutorials to get a grip
to all you fucking jerks who constantly prattle on about how there's so many guides out there and we should somehow just get good overnight by looking at them, did you ever stop to think that maybe we already did and our current shitty level is the result of studious hard work researching the guides?
think about it, without the guides we'd be even worse. so hold your fucking tongue when you decide to shit out your "criticism"
>>27356846
Oh, also, don't forget to shift+f to get a look at your polyframe. The Zremesher function is exactly surprisingly capable too if you're looking for better geometry before you export; assuming you're not going to retopo from scratch.
Performance is pretty alright for me, gets really laggy once it's gone across ~1.5 mil though, but at that point you can just start isolating parts
>>27357009
It is actually a lot easier than it seems, trust me, if you can learn to use zbrush then MD is a breeze.
>>27346978
You can't expect to make progress by drawing the same face with different hair over and over again.
Go to the beginner thread on /ic/. Ask them to recommend some books. Learn fundamentals.
>>27346981
Lies.
I've been focusing more on studying anatomy and getting better this past year. I haven't done a single finished piece in a year and I've improved drastically.
>>27357098
It's not like Zbrush is THAT hard. Maybe if you're a poweruser that knows every single option, but just about the trickiest parts of Zbrush is simply keeping your model on your screen and the transpose tool lol. I still have trouble rotating items sometimes, it's nuts. Don't really understand why the move transpose tool has got some kind of "squash" function on that outer circle either
>>27357082
zremesh is one of the things i love about it and is half the reason i even open the program sometimes. the performance for me is very bad though, even just as high as 500k faces, that can kind of ruin it for me (i need a better computer.). and the fact that it doesn't do smooth shading at all makes it hard to get a gist of what you're looking at at low polycounts. i prefer to use zbrush as a tool for adding tiny normal map details to a mesh ive created a low poly of in maya and for its zremesh function basically.
>>27357180
transpose tool is a NIGHTMARE. that's another reason i can't get comfortable in zbrush.
I want to learn how to draw from scratch. Does anyone have any tips or books for learning?
>>27357518
>>>/ic/1579290
Here is the real shit, there's a shit ton of good books to download and study
i rarely ever show anyone what i draw because i think it's terrible, but it's a nice distraction.
>>27356269
Yeah okay. You find treasure planet yet?
>>27358365
you do realise the image is called jim.jpg because I drew Jim Hawkins? I love that film and i wanted to try out the art style from peace walkers motion comics.
>>27358445
Yeah m8.
Did yoji do those? I can't remember for sure.
>>27346935
I feel your pain OP. I tr to do digital drawings but they never improve either.
I can never finish because they take so long I can try a quick face but I struggle so much and my self confidence crashes. I'm stuck in paint.net for hours just trying to get some results.
>>27351770
stop starting with airbrush for starters
you airbrush the details not the whole piece
I try to draw good drawings but they always turn out shit.
What's a good way to practice drawing and get good at it?
>>27359070
use the eraser or layers if you are digital
inprove them until they look good either artistic or academic
>>27346935
I drew this for pol
>>27346935
This is the best colored pencil I've done, fuck drawing hands. The scythe is also straight up ripped from shad's reaper design.
>>27346935
This is not my best but my favorite sketch I've done
I'll post some. I'm really bad though. Not "tee hee Im just saying that" I actually am, but I keep drawing because I have things in my head I need to get out as images. Someone else can draw a better version later.
>>27346935
This is my best digital art that I tried to just get done with in a few hours so it isn't great.
Another one I created, partially on MSpaint / Paint.net using gradients and transparencies for the haze. Basically I draw it on index cards, ink it, erase the pencil, then put it in high contrast so I can color it in paint.
One of the characters from my story. I am better at drawing women than men for some reason... maybe its because females have more a form that gives me a better guideline for proportions.
Another drawing I made of some elite troops, this one is heavily modified in the computer.
>>27346935
And I have one completed charcoal drawing I really like and one I've been working on for about 2 weeks now but my ability to draw depends on if I'm feeling it or not
did this one for an animation i'm working on
>>27360281
You're the ant/louse guy, right?
Occasionally I try to do stuff with colored pencil. This is the one character who looks like me. He is dead now, though.
I'll post a couple more, just because this is an actual OC thread on the OC board and it deserves the bumps.
>>27360318
and another one, for the same animation
Here's some pixel art I did, I am planning to make a "movie" (basically a series of still frames in sequence, almost like a comic book) with them but I don't know if I should do pixel art, or the colored drawings I posted above. Which do you think is "better"? I think pixel art is slightly faster but it has to be made on the computer and it is not always easy to focus on the computer. But I'd appreciate any advice one which one I shuold use.
>>27360318
How do you do animations? I'm curious. Do you just draw the frames? Do you do a lot of tracing? I feel like it'd be really hard to do the same drawing over and over but slightly different.
>>27360328
I've always liked the slender limbs art style. How far are you along in your animation?
I tend to keep away from places like /ic/. They just make me feel depressed, like I'm not improving at all.
I have a lot more fun just drawing what I want, then glancing back over my work for the past year and seeing how I've improved.
Sorry about the pic for ants, here's a larger one. But yeah, it's this versus thumbnail drawings on index cards for each "scene" or "frame" that is basically like a comic book with each frame played in sequence for about 3 to 5 seconds.
>>27360328
These are really good. What program do you use? Do you draw with a tablet / stylus or what?
>>27360380
I use a combination of frame by frame and tweening. As for Backgrounds, i just move around assets in after effects. There are a lot of tricks you can use when animating, look up some tutorials if you have the chance. >Pic related
>a self portrait
>>27360321
> You're the ant/louse guy, right?
Yes. I'm trying to make a movie out of my autistic story. trying to decide between pixel art and thumbnail drawings.
For an example of what I'm trying to be like, check out the "animation" (art, I guess) in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2XGp5ix8HE
Just the still frames going by in series. Even that same kind of bland color drawing style, is how I am planning to tell the story. That said I don't know if I should do the drawings or pixel art, hence me asking for advice.
>>27346935
Trying to start a webcomic.
>>27360458
I've always wondered how the program actually does tweening, if it is the program (and I assume it is). It reminds me of keyframing from 3D animation, which drove me nuts until I gave up on it. I actually started rendering individual images then putting them together in Windows Movie Maker, basically doing a claymation / stopmotion in 3D CAD.
That's cool though, I'm going to have to look up some tutorials seeing as I am going to try something kind of like this.
>>27360414
That's the way to do it senpai
I'll post a few more but I have literally hundreds of these drawings (302 colored like pic related plus tons of pixel art) so there's no way I could post them all.
I have absolutely no idea how to draw, but I'm trying to teach myself through the use of /ic/'s sticky and Loomis. If anyone knows, is it ok to skip fun with a pencil and go straight to Figure Drawing for All it's Worth and Drawing the Head and Hands and all his other books?
>>27360414
Another 'drawing' of mine.
This style was something I devised back when I was MEGA depressed and could barely do anything. It's just using the pen tool in photoshop to make simple, angular drawings.
They still look really nice, though, and I use the style on my in-character diary's illustrations.
>>27360261
I've...
I've seen this.
>>27346935
Did this a while ago, I sure hope that I can practice on them Andrew Loomis books more consistently.
It is a long way to go, and I'm going into biochemistry.
This is Cassiopeia, another character, sister of the guy I posted the drawing of up above.
>>27360841
This looks really nice. I'm amazed people can do this sort of stuff with a mouse, anytime I drawing something with a mouse, even just a line to patch up something missing, it comes out crooked and misses.
>>27360827
For beginners, like me, start with Fun With a Pencil. It teaches you a lot of important, easily overlooked basics and easy techniques.
I used some of the tricks I learnt from that book even now. This drawing is an example.
I like designing monsters.
>>27360907
It's actually quite easy. While using the pen tool to make curvy lines is awkward to master, in the case of drawings like that, I just do a connect-the-dots style of drawing. Notice that all the lines are angular with no curving?
>>27360827
Do what works better for you, anon
Those books are good to start.
>>27360897
Hey drawfriend!
>>27360907
Drawing with a mouse is just a matter of getting used to, it is harder but you can get to the point where people can't tell you're using a mouse
>>27360999
hey what's up?
no avatar fagging pls
This is one of the monsters from the story, it basically rolls along on these tentacles and impales prey / enemies with the ones that aren't being used to support it. I picture it moving in my head with a hissy squishing sound and it gives me chills. Sadly the drawing likely doesn't have the same horrifying effect. The things are meant to be like 20 feet in diameter and can roll along like 30 miles an hour by coordinating the tentacle movements.
>>27360971
>>27360999
Interesting. I'm very much not used to it, but I'll have to give it a try.
>>27360971
>>27360999
thanks for the help, I think I'll work through Fun With a Pencil first
Nice trips btw
Here's another colored pencil drawing of one of the enemy soldiers from the story. I've done a lot of drawings of them over time.
>>27361086
if you add more tentacles it'd look like a human egg
Here's some more simple, pen tool drawings. The bug is a character of mine called Lissie the Little Wasp, depicted here being attacked violently in various ways.
Poor Lissie.
Used to do commission shit but haven't for ages
One of the female characters dies while defending a bomb they were setting off to destroy an enemy tower. Another character drags her out but it's too late for her and she bleeds to death.
>>27361124
True. Heh.
I guess it does kind of look like a cell.
>>27361253
they look pretty unique
