When you first start dating you actually get to know each other. Obviously there's a bare minimum of common ground that led you two to get together, like you listen to the same handful of bands, but then you delve deeper into each other's likes/dislikes.
Sometimes your likes/dislikes match up perfectly, sometimes you find out that you have less things in common than you thought you did. Depending on how much you like on another, you'll be willing to watch each other's bad movies & TV shows and listen to each others' bad music besides those few bands in common and do things you don't really want to be doing, because you still enjoy each other on a personal level, hobbies and entertainment aside. Or that's when you decided to end things before they get worse.
Once you're past that "test-the-waters" phase, you just do whatever it is that you do either by yourself (play vidya, watch movies & TV, go to shows or sports games or plays, go hiking, etc.) or with friends. Also you introduce her to your circle of friends, and she introduces you to her circle of friends. Then it's the same with meeting each others' parents (unless yall live at home in which case that happens sooner probably) Again that's a turning point that can go either way.
If you don't have any friends, then you're probably screwed and she'll break up with you in a few months.
That's as far as I ever went in any relationship, I never got to "let's move in with each other" although I came very very close.
