I just don't buy the whole idea that humans are the only ones who know they exist thing. To me it seems like old Christian rhetoric which we believed for thousands of years because the bible said God made the world for us to rule over. There has been less than 100 years of research into animal's brains. Up until recently it was accepted that humans were the only species that could problem solve, which is part of the reason we can control the world like we do. It has since been shown a lot of animals, particularly certain monkeys and even birds can solve logical problems through trial, error and thought.
There is no definitive science to even prove what consciousness is so I think it is impossible to say we are the only creatures that experience it. I am sure it comes from the old Christian beliefs and if looked at purely objectively and scientifically there is nothing behind it, outside of the fact we obviously have better developed brains. But is there a part of the brain that is responsible for consciousness? A part we have and that animals do not? It seems purely religious workings to me.

I can only speak for my driver but he was ex-forces who both killed and saw his mates getting killed in Norn Iron and the Falklands.
I guess after that and with zero qualifications, the only decent paying job (he's on 30k - nights out) he could get was driving a lorry. To be fair, he was a very good driver and given his regimented upbringing (he certainly wasn't raised by his parents), his timekeeping was immaculate.
I suppose it might also have something to do with the whole monotony of the job and the "macho" nature of the work.
Obviously, not all drivers are madheads. Some I worked with were as chill as fuck.
