When the boxxy wars came they all fled to different chans. I was a 420chan refugee. Then I switched to reddit for a while because it was okay to talk about reddit irl, but not 4chan. Now I lost all my friends and am back to 4chan.
I dunno, ever since messenger social networks have been kind of a big thing, and then became ever bigger when myspace, fotolog, etc. Also there might have not been smartphones but texting was still a thing and everyone normal person has had a cellphone for a while.
But yeah I always though on my first 4chan years that I'd never see a meme IRL. I could say memes while speaking casually to check out for 4channers and it never happened until memes transcended this website and became unfunny.
