/vg/ doesn't have a separate set of workers because of it's speed, but because of the high bump limit and general-ness. When the bump limit is 750, every thread hits it and every thread is regenerated when you post, it's a lot heavier on the server than just making a random post in a 20 post thread that'll die in 20 minutes.
/v/ is still faster than /vg/, it's just lighter on the server. /vg/ might well be heavier than /b/.

I'm inclined to think it was a slip of the fingers or simplifying his language as raw traffic wouldn't affect workers. Chan workers are what handles posting and file generation, which aren't affected by traffic, but by post/thread speed/length/etc. The files themselves are static and flung out like any static file.
