I found out some of the reasons for that recently. Pretty interesting. I mean, I know Americans are Amerifats, but the fat thing with dispatchers is out of control. So this friend of a friend is a dispatcher locally and we had a talk about it. She is literally the only thin dispatcher at her department.
Dispatchers basically have the same stressors as officers, although by proxy. They know their officers, they care about them, they know what the officers are going through and they hear it all over the radio--but they can't really do shit. Two of the women at our department were working the day one of our best-loved officers got shot and killed. One later had a breakdown and had to quit. Plus they deal with the public at their worst, all the time. Plus, they often work long AND unnatural hours, staying up all night, shit like that. On top of that, it's a sedentary job, ten to twelve hours a day. At least officers get exercise.
The sum total is--body clock fucked up, sleep cycle fucked up, incredible chronic stress problems, constant adrenaline and cortisol rushes straining their cardiovascular systems and fucking up their metabolisms, depression and other mood issues from the horrible graphic shit and human misery they listen to all shift, and they sit on their asses through all of it.
And on top of that, unless they manage to bring good food from home every day, they often end up eating fast food and takeout crap every day.
Moral is: dispatching is not for sissies. It won't just harsh your mellow, it will also rek your health unless you fight back, hard.
I hadn't thought of any of that and I ended up feeling pretty bad for dispatchers. Not a profession I could do, that's for sure.
