Heatstroke was a real problem historically too, there are recorded cases of people dying before reaching the opposing side. Biggest drawback of armor has always been heat.

It's supposed to be a tournament, not a battle. Generally you wouldn't have a lot of deaths in a medieval tournament- jousts, for example, were carried out with blunt lances to minimize casualties, and melee events were fought until one combatant yields.
It's sport, not warfare.
