It really depends on what you're looking for in a guitarist: technical ability or an original voice. Ideally, a musician should have both in ample supply, but so few do. Indeed, it is much "easier" to develop technical ability than it is to develop an original voice, particularly in the overcrowded wold of rock/pop guitar.
I personally think Prince is a brilliant guitarist, but to each his own. I would certainly rather listen to him do a solo than a Joe Satrini or a Steve Vai.
