My five great uncles were all brothers who served in the marines in WWII. Four of them were in Europe, one was in the Pacific.
The four in Europe served and came back home relatively unscathed. The one who served in the Pacfic was capture and held as a POW by the Japanese for nine months.
They mercilessly tortured him on a daily basis. He was kept in a cage, which was too small for him to sit upright in.
When he was rescued and came back to the states, he was awarded a purple heart for his time spent as a POW.
He was not able to adjust to living in a large space such as a house, and as a result, lived in a woodshed behind his brothers house for 15 years.
Most of my memories of him were from when I was a child - I would visit their house every Easter. By that time, he had moved into the back room of his brothers house. I would see him there, down a long hallway, sitting on an old leather couch. He watched spaghetti westerns all day.
All five brothers lived past 80, four of them reaching their 90s. The youngest brother is still alive, the rest have passed on.
