People were always on the go back then. No one would've wished to stay home and look at a screen, arcades were big, though, malls were always packed, dance clubs, comedy clubs.. heck, every celeb wannabe had a workout video. It was a different world.

I can't point to one singular thing that made everything horrible, but 24/7 news channels played a major part by creating a lot of paranoia and pushing more areas of life to become politicized. That's when the major liberal brainwashing started coming in force in the 90's. I go back and watch some older programming and it's shocking to see how in your face some of it was. Political correctness was still treated as a joke and no one ate up the gay agenda until the late 90's though.
I remember playgrounds being made of steel and wood and if you got hurt playing on it, you toughened up and dealt with it, then went back to playing. If someone did something you didn't like, you weren't "triggered", you took it in stride. Everything became injurious and traumatic in the public mind.
>>69943556
'84 here. 1995 and 96 were the happiest for me as well.
Things weren't perfect back then. Infrastructure and technology has come a long way since then. Culturally though, we were a world of much stronger people with a sense of romance to life still instead of the crushing gray cynicism that affects even the kids (who don't get to be kids anymore) of today.
It's also weird to think how much different peoples world view was back then.
No Columbine, school shooting were unheard of. No 9/11. No refugees
I'm not saying things were completely peaceful, this was during the cold war. And you still heard about tragedies in the news, but not nearly as frequently.
To people back then, the world must have seemed like a genuinely safer place.
But I'm only 20, I don't remember the world before 9/11 so I wouldn't know,

>nobody secretly snapchatting every mild social transgression you make for a laugh
>nobody recording you having a good time
>no isolated community of friends to promote trust and free expression in social situations
We have destroyed the concept of a unified tribe and created a society where everyone is expected to conform to the rules of all tribes simultaneously. The result is an extremely uniform (read: boring) but well defined culture of what is an acceptable means of speaking, behaving, and otherwise enjoying yourself in public within all corners of the 1st world. The following communities can exempt themselves
>small towns
>the heavily impoverished
>invisible/unimportant college fraternities
>gay clubs (straight women cannot dominate the sex game and enforce social standards here as they do elsewhere)
>true alphas (do whatever they like and still get away with it because of astounding charisma/good looks/massive dick/money/etc.)
>eccentrics (like above but instead generally immune to social combat/peer pressure/sexual influence)
If you want to see what the 80's was like, throw a party, take cell phones at the door, force people to wear something odd or even slightly ridiculous, only invite friends in large groups (work friends, old school friends, etc. Not lone wolves).. Invest in a budget to make sure people get drunk and enforce the rules with a passion typically reserved for professional referees. Get a couple of games going that break the ice (not beer pong) and most importantly of all, do not open music to the public. Have a DJ, forbid anything made past your junior year of high school and let the night fly. I've arranged 3 of these to date and they've all been pretty goddamn decent desu.

GenXfag here: people acted way different in front of a videocamera then, like they had to "present" to it, so they put a brighter face forward. The guy who made the video dismissed that angle and said lots of people had them at Disney World, which might have been the truth because back then it was a major vacation, but those people would be taping their kids, not going around interviewing people like this guy. (Notice how the girl in front of the frozen foods starts posing, and the couple introduces themselves and says their names.) I used to be one of those guys who'd walk around with one and people would put on a show all the time (or try to act cool like the guy with the cigarette or be like "don't tape me").

After the main electrical grid is back things would be perfect. Since literally every cellphone would be broke people would have to use landlines to communicate again. Internet usage would be back to govt/business only for a while. Manufacturing would surge back because without planes and global communication international trade would slow down.

that's sobering. I remember how friendly we were with our neighbors when I was growing up. No one trusts one another now, we all assume the worst because of how ugly the world has become.
Society became more accepting, but many people's sensibilities haven't changed. The only people that benefited from the slacking of standards and condemnation of morality are the dredges of society, who got looked down on in better times. What the fuck happened to standards

I dislike homosexuality and really only tolerate it.
I hate trannies, SJW's, and anything else in that nature and I don't even entertain it in casual conversation. I wish I had a community of people to hang out with or do things with. Everyone at work is so isolated and pretty much never do anything outside of work unless its mandated. As an adult I've never done anything with neighbors. I want to have an active social life, and to actually form connections with people. Honestly I feel bad for people who done have good relationships with their family/extended family. If I didn't have my family I'd be a sociopath.

>Why was society so much better in the 80s?
Elderfag here, I grew up in the 80's. Specifically, I was 14 in 1980 and 24 in 1990.
The 80's were not as great as you guys think they were.
You guys only hear the good music from the 80's. But in the actual 80's, we had to listen to it all. Most of it was horrendous - new wave keyboards routed through infant technology over songs performed by talentless hacks with awesome hair.
The fashion was lame. Even then we knew it was lame. I remember the first time I wore parachute pants, I was with my friends, who were all wearing their faddy, faggy shit, and I said, "Guys, we seriously look gay." They agreed. But it got us laid.
We didn't have cellphones, computers, digital music, or a thousand channels of TV.
There were some good things too. We were a lot more free in the 80's than kids are today. Cops weren't such assholes back then. Americans weren't at each others' throats over the smokescreen called "politics."
Every decade gets a nostalgic glow about it eventually. This one will get the same treatment - about 20-30 years from now.
But trust me, guys, the 80's were just another decade, featuring a LOT of lameness mixed in with the good stuff that survived to be seen by your generation.

88 here. When Desert Storm happened, I climbed out of my crib and broke my arm.
My parents didn't know I was seriously hurt, they took me into their bed and only in the morning did they realize my arm was severely broken.
To this day, I can't straighten it all the way out, but it's a lot stronger than the other arm. I've never understood why. Me too, and I could not disagree with you more. Music was the best. There were so many different genres to choose from: 70s, disco, pop, metal, classical rock, rock-n-roll, new wave, alternative, goth, tech, country, reggae, oldies, motown, etc. Plus, radio stations were local and were awesome. You could call up and request a song and even do dedications.
Towns still did neighborhood block parties and held parades for holidays. Kids could play in the parks and walk to school without fear.
Fashion was cool because like music, there was a variety. You could dress as a WOB (wearer of black), a goth, a Frat-Sorority kid, a cowboy/country, etc.
Today, everything is the same. The music sucks, and there only seems to be rap.

Not true. In Australia at the very least, meth is far worse than heroin ever was. And meth is worse than crack I think objectively. Now throughout the country there are friggin ice labs in almost every suburb

Agreed. It is not enjoyable, you can't tap your feet to it, and it totally unmemorable. Except for this song - very early 80s rap:
"Dinner, you ate it, there is none left

You proceeded to eat it cos you was in the mood
But holmes you did not read it was a can of dog food!

Also, back then heroin was really expensive. Meth is cheap as chips. This is the main reason imho for all the petty theft that was going on. On the Gold Coast during the late 80s/early 90s, every house was routinely broken into, because they needed cheap stuff to convert into cash to feed their habits. Now it is much harder to pawn stuff, and methheads can afford to buy without stealing or selling their bodies
Thought I'd post on this just for a view of what I experienced back then. Born 82 here, saw some of the late 80's but 89 to 92 had some good memories. Used to camp in Connecticut place called Strawberry Park, spent the days catching frogs, going to the pool or even the little arcade they had there. At night went inside and played some Super Nintendo or Nintendo. Was very cool, didn't see kids running around with cell phones, checking their Facebook etc. They even would have events almost every day, hell huge bonfires too. Was cozy like Harvest Moon.

>>69960252
Eh, I don't necessarily WANT to disagree with you, but I do.
For one thing, I was a rock & roll kid, so all this variety of which you speak was lost on me and my friends. We weren't looking for variety, we used to mock the disco kids, the pop kids, the country kids, and the goth kids, for what we perceived as their lesser taste in music.
We were into punk, alternative, hard rock, and we still had all that great 70's rock on the radio back then.
Also, I just don't see how you can say 80's fashion was cool. I can think of a lot of 80's looks - probably all of them. And not a single one makes any sense now. Spandex? Parachute pants? Those red leather jackets with 20 zippers on them? Mullets? That crazy gigantic girl-hair? Maybe not boring, but definitely ugly.
Anyway, if you greatly enjoyed the 80's, I'm glad for you. I greatly enjoyed them too, but my perception is that is because I was young, not because I grew up in some prime decade.
We all have fond memories of our youth.

people that are kids now are going to remember now as a time that everything was ok, people were frienldy, etc
I think it has more to do with the fact that adults lose that naiveness kids have.

Thank you. Nice sentiment. And your take is absolutely correct. I actually have started to regularly attend Sunday mass (Catholic Master Race reporting in).

yea, shit architecture except for mansions in the hamptons and gold coast, but seriously, we have the most agreeable black people every in towns excluding wyandanch and hempstead. They behave like normal people, and alot of towns have mexicans/central americans who eventually will/have integrated. Its a great place to live.
>>69961085
I know that that is true of bank robberies. Apparently not having to feed a 300 dollar a day habit combined with banks shutting down killed off that popular Aussie passtime.

I really don't get it
I thought it would all just be a cooler version of radiofagging, but its pretty much been the biggest social disaster imaginable
I mean I guess normies don't have access to most radio but still
I'm not even sure I can blame the internet at this point, maybe it was going to happen no matter what

Same I got unreasonably depressed watching those videos.
literally why live? We live in a post-everything society, post-national, post-culture, post-privacy, increasingly globalised etc...
And then I realize that I am 20 years old and that by Western health standard I got 60 years left to live. Utterly depressing.
Better dead than living a wasted life in a wasted world.
you can't say drugs are 'diffrent', it was the 80's coke wars that shaped todays criminal justice system. AIDS was a fag disease but a hige deal back then

Ok. This song is amusing, has a nice intrumental backing etc. There have been some decent rap songs, but few.
On another note, is it possible for 'music' to get any worse?

>The 80's were the best, as long as you weren't black or poor,
Not true. Absolutely not true, and I know, because I started college in the 1980s. I was a poorfag from the Midwest. Most of my friends in college were Blacks and they came from much, much wealthier families than I did, yet they had Black scholarships, Black grants, free Black campus housing. What did I have as a poor White? Nothing. They took Spring Break every year. I worked and still could never afford a Spring Break.
Being poor was much better in the 1980s because that was before the government started to criminalize being poor and helping the poor. There were plenty of shelters and food banks and churches feeding and housing the poor and charities going out to feed the poor. Now, most of that has been outlawed.

>crushing gray cynicism that affects even the kids
I can see this in my younger siblings. I was just old enough to hit my late teen's before the internet became popular.
I grew up in the late 90's and ALL we did was hang around outside. I remember getting a RAZR phone as a teen and thinking it was the shit.
Now I come home for holidays and I see my brother and sister glued to their devices 24/7.

to my recollection even living in and around the Bay Area in the 80's I don't think I even heard of AIDS until the 90's unless you were gay I could easily see never having heard about AIDS.
>>69961166
>Also, I just don't see how you can say 80's fashion was cool. I can think of a lot of 80's looks - probably all of them. And not a single one makes any sense now. Spandex? Parachute pants? Those red leather jackets with 20 zippers on them? Mullets? That crazy gigantic girl-hair? Maybe not boring, but definitely ugly.
Probably because I never knew anyone who dressed in the way you describe. Not even on the large college campus I attended did I ever see anyone dressed that way. I dressed as a WOB, my friends dressed pretty normal for the day (jeans, tee-shirts or nice tops). A few girls dressed a bit bohemian - bellowy skirts with tee-shirts. Not too much big hair, either, but lots of neat styles versus the straight hair of the 70s and today.
It is not that my memories are that fond of my youth, it is just the World today is so horrible and depressing and dark that the 80s remind me of light, happiness, fun, nice people.

Meth is way worse than coke. Coke addicts can recover, and certainly casual users. But meth does something very nasty to the brain. Coke like heroin was expensive, this partly explains why so much petty crime was associated with it (and prostitution, and bank robbing etc)
I was born in 1982 so I don't remember / wasn't aware of how the world was back then since my main interests were playing outside and NES. The 90s were great though, and so were the first few years of the 2000s. I think things started to go bad in 2003 or so
We can all agree the reason why some of us might be nostalgic about the 80s or any previous decade, is because the current era is just garbage for reasons other anons already mentionned. I don't have have any children, but for some I doubt some kid born in 2004 will one day be reminiscing about the current era and be like ''dude...! do you remember back in 2016? things were awesome and so different! I miss X or I wish we could have Y back''
I witnessed the birth of the internet (which was good back then). I experienced a world without cellphones or cuckbook.
I was really active in the late 90s/early 2000s underground rave scene, which is something completely different from ''EDM music festivals'' and other faggy modern bullshit.

What stands out about the 2010s besides that feeling of downfall ?
>>69961708
This song and clip are pretty cheesy, but no way near as bad as the modern stuff. I mean at least it has a tune. I can think of a lot worse 80s songs also.

Trust me, they will. My dad was nostalgic for the 60s when Canada was being "invaded by pakis" in 1978. Now he's nostalgic for the early- mid 90s. In 2025 the immigrant invasion and destruction of western culture will be even worse than it is now.

This is what makes me laugh. We'll all be looking back at 2016 in 20 years from now and thinking "those were the good times".

The world will fall into chaos before it realizes it was standing on our shoulders the whole time.
And this thought does not even provide me with comfort, I am just sad, sad that our world is dying, sad like someone whose world has committed suicide and who is forced to watch, powerless.
Just kill me already...

What's interesting is how laced the music and movies are with nostalgia and bittersweet melancholy. The good stuff was, anyway. It was as if people knew it couldn't last. The tearjerker happy endings in the John Hughes movies (The Breakfast Club especially) and some of those who copied him, and even in the Spielberg inspired/produced kid stuff. The Goonies comes immediately to mind.
The wistful guitar melodies you heard in early REM, The Smiths, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the good Cure records. It might have been that nuclear war was still an everpresent concern and knew we could die at any moment; it might have been that being a teenager was genuinely fun if your life wasn't too fucked up, and we were raised by parents who remembered their teenage years as a special time and reminded us to enjoy ourselves.
Few people I knew were in a hurry to grow up.
And that bittersweet nostalgic thing isn't just hindsight, it was noticeable at the time. For me it was more palpable then than it is now.
