If you want to read what kind of insane shit they did get the books "A Course in Pure Mathematics" by Hardy and "Advanced Calculus" by Sternberg and Loomis. The Hardy book (free) is amazing and will motivate you for pure mathematics. The other book is today used by graduate students as a reference for differentiating on every single type of manifold yet undergrads did it in the 1960s as their second math course.
Somehow we have regressed because university has now become equivalent to a high school diploma. They keep dumbing down the degrees so everybody can do it as opposed to the 1960s where only the top 1% of society was qualified to get in.

I think of learning math in the early stages like learning chess: you don't need to understand now, just get good.
It's a skill. Then the higher you go, the less mechanical and the more conceptual it becomes. It should become 'easier' in some ways and 'harder' in others as you finally begin to understand math. At this point, students start to fall off the wayside as the lessons hit their limits of comprehension. But as long the fundamentals are mastered, most students should be able to do low-level algebra.
