Oh my god. I hope this is a joke. Please no.
>>69074580
You'd think they'd give the kid credit cause it's a pretty smart answer. All of these piss me off.
>>69074302
common core is a globalist plot to dumb down the people
I'm terribly embarrassed of this, but I took me far to long to realize that PEMDAS was sort of a bullshit "trick"
I would constantly fuck up equations thinking Addition MUST be done before subtraction in an equation,(despite what came first from right to left) otherwise the answer would be incorrect.
I had to pass algebra 3 times. It should be mandatory on most people.
Its a decent approach however what about the retards who cant write a 5 page assignment or run a mile? What about an imbecile who cant do all 3? Should there be schooling for people destined to work at the box factory?
This is what Yuri said. Teach them something useless instead of something pragmatic like mathematics or chemistry.
>>69074580
The kid's answer sounds fairly reasonable.
>>69074302
it is if you want the masses as dumb as possible. keep them easy to manipulate and shiiieeeet.
>>69074302
Black kids ruin our test scores. Normal, non-rascist people look at this and think that there is a education problem because they can't see the truth.
This will eventually lead to a lowering of educational standards.
>>69074740
>>69074984
That answer is pretty sound if you consider the question seems more like a riddle than a math question.
they want to keep dumbing down the curriculum to appease the niggers and spics. this will only lead to the complete abolition of school itself because minorities never improve
>>69074847
Multiplication and Division have the same priority as does addition and subtraction.
I don't know of any teachers teaching it wrong, so you're probably just a retard who remembered it wrong.
What pisses me off is there are tons of resources in this day and age to explain this

>scientific calculators both real and apps
and there are morons that don't fucking get it.
How is this even possible?
>>69074580

And to think it actually used to be a respectable position.
I use algebra to figure out most problems in my life. It's use as a problem solving and critical thinking tool is not in any way limited to math and if you have a hard time with it you should be shot.

>>69074302
>Is Algebra an unnecessary stumbling block to US schools?
Math is great, but not for everyone. I excelled in math and am old enough to have taken actual classes called algebra and calculus in high school. Today, here anyways, it is math a, math b and math c. The shit i did in grade 11 and 12 is now university credit shit.
I felt it was unfair though at the time to have remedial math. It stuck on people hard. It should have been basic math that can be used on a day to day basis up to grade 10, and any more advanced math should have been an elective.
I think we missed out on some great poets and novelists because of our standard of mathematical understanding in higher education.

A lot of them have zero math skills. We have a culture of math illiteracy that parents and teachers are passing down to their kids with this kind of crap.
>>69075703
Not true, kids need to learn to sit for long periods of time, do paperwork, follow instructions, and leave dangerous situations in an orderly fashion.
These are the crucial life skills they can't pick up anywhere else.

I have a bachelor's degree and basically only ever use basic math, algebra concepts, and stats. I consider my high school alg 2, 3, and calc to have been massive wastes of time and energy. If anything I think reading/writing and social science curriculum should be expanded since it's fundamental to being a good, functional, citizen. Above algebra 1(which could really be more of a symbolic logic class with geometry and alg concepts) math is really only useful to very specific studenta

Thus, the only way to make sure that all children are succeeding is to lower standards.

(2*3*4/4*2/5)
Do it in any order.
For some reason liberals are only ever able to look at symptoms instead of the true problem. Black kids not passing high school = standards should be lowered. Nevermind that it defeats the purpose of school in the first place if you lower the standards. Same with economics. They see high prices and they think the solution is to arbitrarily lower the prices. Leftists are completely unable to comprehend that the high prices are a symptom of low supply.
>>69076301
To be fair, it's nkt hard to become a teacher here. Hence there are a lot of shitty teachers in the US.

People don't give math the credit it deserves
You think about shit in a different way after taking a math class
If you've taken a basic philosophy course and learned basic logic you'll relate what I'm trying to say
You may not use any of those arguments or anything those philosophers said but you'll think a different way and have an easier time solving problems
Same shit happens with math
This is coming from a biochemistry students that hates math and can't wait to be done with it because I know for a fact I won't ever use it again unless the lab I end up working in uses stone age tech

It isn't. Nowhere in the original problem it is stated that both persons eat pizzas that were of the same size. The way the question is asked also is retarded because added to the fact that you are lacking data you have two possible answers, that the statement is true and then the pizzas were obviously not of the same size or that the statement is correct and the pizzas were the same size.
The teacher should have realized his/her mistake and give the kid/girl a cookie.

As a huge fan of math, I will even admit that being taught imaginary numbers is not that important. Really doesn't need to be dealt with until after two semesters of calculus. Lots of math and statistics that are more useful.

>>69076851
that's a big part of it, but it's more complicated than that
all advanced bureaucracies use statistics to measure performance. 2k years ago in ancient china, they realized that the person who controls the metrics controls, essentially, the type of policy that is enacted.
if your enemy is the emperor, and the emperor wants better military, and you want to fuck with him, you don't try to directly make the military worse. instead, you destroy his ability to measure troops, supplies, etc.
this is something the romans knew, but the enlightenment destroyed our understanding of actual history.
the democrats are trying to destroy republicans. instead of directly destroying education, they START by destroying the ability of republicans to do good things.
if you divide performance into IQ, you have COMPLETE vision of performance across all races. OUTLAWED. then, you break it down into SAT scores, which divide into percentiles, so instead of complete vision, you have it divided into 100 parts. it's broken down, the ceiling is lowered by ten percentiles, meaning via reform, the most difficult 10% of questions are phased out, meaning someone at the top 10% is indistinguishable from the top 1%. THEN they discard the SAT and use grades, which is a quintile system, a, b, c, d, f. you can only distinguish every 20% group. THEN, everyone just gets a's. the information apparatus is destroyed. Now, even someone who WANTS to promote good education finds it impossible to do so.
do you see? it's less about protecting nigger feelings, and more about destroying the institutions which the republicans can control.

>>69077343
>By the way, imaginary numbers are extremely useful to describe waves. Basically, you can use them to replace sin/cos functions. They allow for easier manipulations.
This is something that early maths teaching usually fails at: getting students to realize what the math that's being taught is useful for. I can't tell you how many times we'd ask our teacher what we were being taught at the time was good for, and they rarely had an answer. That's a little demoralizing, or at least doesn't give a student a good drive.
If you told a student that learning imaginary numbers is particularly useful for people who get really involved in calculating electrical impedance (for electrical engineers), then kids interested in electronics might take more note of the lesson.

10th grade was fine in terms of teaching, though it was geometry, and the teacher didn't care. Would literally spend a class watching 24 because his DVR didn't record it the night before. 11th grade, my math teacher legitimately quit halfway through the year, and we bounced on subs for a while, so we couldn't learn. By 12th grade, they just dumped me and most of my classmates into a remedial class.
Biggest thing hindering me from getting my college degree right now. Math has literally fucked my higher education over because my teachers sucked ass at teaching. My degree doesn't even use math outside of measurements.
The problem with American education math is that they don't teach how to understand the problem. From elementary school, students are given formula charts. They literally take a month or two in high school math to teach you how to plug stuff into calculators, instead of what you do and why. By the time you get to college, you're absolutely fucked when most classes don't allow those.

No, because the government takes alot of your shit if you dont work for them and want to retire early. I think it was like 60% of your investments that they force you to put money into. That and it was a mechanical engineer that worked in a machine shop. He got like 50k starting with little room of improvement or something like that. He hated the union people too. Its because most people teaching algebra have no idea what they are talking about. They are generally people who hated math to begin with and became middle school teachers. They do not know why i is useful or when it should be taught.
By the time kids get to high school math, where the teacher had to almost get a bachelors in math to teach it, the teacher has to spend all their time teaching them remedial bullshit that should of been taught years ago.

7 is an odd number, we need to check to make sure there is no vowel on the other side.

Teachers shouldn't see it as just a "dead end job", if they do they should be fired so they can get a "real" job and make "real money", that kind of attitude is extremely corrosive to their students, many of whom have parents that don't make half that much money and have to work longer hours at much shittier jobs.
It's really a huge problem in America because almost all of our teachers are middle class women who've been spoon fed their whole lives and have no life experience outside of college, of course $40G a year is shit pay compared to what their parents make/ made.
We need more male teachers in the US, that's the only way to fix our educational system. We'll never do it though, (men have to get a "real" job, preferably one that makes you out to be cold and emotionless, like an engineer, or a lawyer) instead we'll just keep lowering our standards so we look better as a country (and so our school boards will keep there funding) we'll ignore the problem and hope it just fucking goes away one day.

As someone who has an education degree, I have a couple of things to say.
>1/4 of the year off
This isn't true. You're gonna get maybe half of that off, then spend the rest of it planning or at meetings. Teaching has a lot of time off the clock, which is the main reason that teachers complain that they aren't getting paid enough.
>shit on kids cause you dont need to do real work
If you mistreat kids, it's VERY easy to get fired. If you aren't doing your job, your job will be on the line very quickly, especially in certain States. Especially because of standardized testing and other standards systems that both judge your effectiveness and put your job or pay on the line as a result.
> stop working early because you work for the government
Is this a point about tenure? Because you don't get that as soon as you start working. It's earned by you being good enough at your job to keep it enough years to be granted it. And then if you knock off too hard, you can still be fired (though it is MUCH harder to fire you.)

They are right though. Not everyone needs to know basic algebra. Not everyone needs to have a college or high school degree.
The reason the education system is so shit is the myth that everyone should graduate from college, and that college degree = better jobs. This results in lowering standards so that people can receive meaningless pieces of paper.

I was able to finish the course, get my certification, and started working as a CNA while 16 years old. This put me very far ahead in the medical field and gave me a real job early on.
Social interaction might be something schools will have to tackle as well. I learned recently my church (I am LDS) has to put some missionaries through social training just to help them learn how to talk to people because they have never interacted with other human beings face to face in a meaningful way.
Of course, we have to ask the question through all of this: Where are the parents?

The trick question is by picking an answer with intent of it being the correct answer you have already failed the criteria of the problem by not picking randomly.
In other words, If you intentionally pick an answer, it's not an answer you got by picking randomly and therefore the question is fucked. A catch .22

A, 2, and 7
A and 2 for their contrapositive and 7 to see if it disproves the rule
K is irrelevant

This is true. But lets suppose the answer is selected at random.
There is still no right answer per the questions verbiage.

the dude with the lever is huge as fuck
I leap in front of the trolley, using the strong body The Good Lord Above gave me, i lift the trolley far enough to ensure everyone is okay, unfortunately i took massive damage from the trolley and i now have severe internal bleeding, i die before the paramedics can save me. i lived a good life and it was worth it.
or i can just pull the level and move the guy before it hits him

answer is AK7
2 is irrelevant because it can be any symbol on the other side
K must be checked because the other side could be a vowel

Protip: Imaginary numbers are a separate system of mathematics than normal. There's many different systems of mathematics and most of them aren't used. Imaginary numbers are just popular because there's results that carry over to our normal number system.
It's like using as one of the axioms that the length of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is the sum of the two sides, rather than using the pythagorean formula (c=a+b as opposed to c^2=a^2+b^2). It's different than our normal math system, you don't miss anything by not knowing it exists, but it's useful in some applications.

but, let's say it's a hypothetical and that we're picking an answer intentionally this time. Is the answer you pick the "correct" answer when you pick randomly? If so it's 25% because there are four choices, but here's where the fucky starts.
What criteria are we using to establish random selection? you can't close your eyes and pick because bias will direct you towards your previous answer, and if you intentionally try to avoid your previous answer in an attempt to be fair and random, the correct answer in intentionally answering becomes C because it's impossible for you to answer randomly.
This problem only becomes genuinely solvable if you can establish and prove a random method for selecting a choice, and then the chance is 25% if we've pre-selected a correct answer before randomly choosing because four different letters. If we haven't previously chose an answer, the answer is 0% because no correct answer is defined, and percentage can not be proven to be more important than the letter. The problem implies the percentage is important but two answers have the same percentage which devalues that theory and that means the chance you will get the right answer is again 25% because you either get one in four or you pass a 50% rng check followed by another 50% rng check. Or something. My brain fucking hurts.
Basically, not enough information.

Hypothetically if you choose the answer the second part of the question because unanswerable because you have 100% chance to choose that answer, and 100% chance is not an option.
