Math is great, but not for everyone. I excelled in math and am old enough to have taken actual classes called algebra and calculus in high school. Today, here anyways, it is math a, math b and math c. The shit i did in grade 11 and 12 is now university credit shit.
I felt it was unfair though at the time to have remedial math. It stuck on people hard. It should have been basic math that can be used on a day to day basis up to grade 10, and any more advanced math should have been an elective.
I think we missed out on some great poets and novelists because of our standard of mathematical understanding in higher education.

This is something that early maths teaching usually fails at: getting students to realize what the math that's being taught is useful for. I can't tell you how many times we'd ask our teacher what we were being taught at the time was good for, and they rarely had an answer. That's a little demoralizing, or at least doesn't give a student a good drive.
If you told a student that learning imaginary numbers is particularly useful for people who get really involved in calculating electrical impedance (for electrical engineers), then kids interested in electronics might take more note of the lesson.

Teachers shouldn't see it as just a "dead end job", if they do they should be fired so they can get a "real" job and make "real money", that kind of attitude is extremely corrosive to their students, many of whom have parents that don't make half that much money and have to work longer hours at much shittier jobs.
It's really a huge problem in America because almost all of our teachers are middle class women who've been spoon fed their whole lives and have no life experience outside of college, of course $40G a year is shit pay compared to what their parents make/ made.
We need more male teachers in the US, that's the only way to fix our educational system. We'll never do it though, (men have to get a "real" job, preferably one that makes you out to be cold and emotionless, like an engineer, or a lawyer) instead we'll just keep lowering our standards so we look better as a country (and so our school boards will keep there funding) we'll ignore the problem and hope it just fucking goes away one day.
