Now, if we're talking the worst slum in all of the united states, it's not in a big city. The worst slum is, without a doubt, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. A poor location, horrifically corrupt tribal government, and a staggering rate of alcoholism combine to make this the worst place to live in the states.
Fun fact: This reservation was the location of the last battle between an armed band of Indians and the federal government... in 1973.

I feel ashamed because favelas have become a symbol of Brazil. Foreigners come here and visit them for the exoticness, while we avoid them like the plague for fear of getting burned alive by drug lords.
I myself live in a city that's civilized by Brazilian standards, in a neighborhood that's equivalent in wealth to the American middle class... but right next to what we call a "vila", a poor neighborhood that's like a favela but which we don't call so since we're too ashamed to admit we have a favela in our supposedly civilized city.

Back in 2011 I bought my first house in supposedly the roughest area of my city. for £130k It was a pretty shitty house but I got a mortgage so I could live somewhere without being a rentcuck. I sold it last summer for £165k and got a much nicer house without too much effort.

In terms of Toronto I find certain parts of Scarborough worse than J&F or Regent Park. I've accidentally ended up in some neighborhoods where the people act like they're in a state of warfare or something.
