I started working with Neural Networks a month or so ago.
Tay is obviously a neural network, I don't have time to help but I can link you my source code for my neural network,
maybe it'll be some help to someone.

It uses a hyperbolic tangent for forward propegation, and the quick derivative of it for backwards propegation ( the actual learning)
it's not super commented.
set up the neural network with the topology of it, feed forward the input values, backward prop. happens auto based on expected result.
This is a super simple neural network, only tested with about 6 Neurons. I assume Tay had millions,
I hope it helps.
You can't design a bot like this using the old means of making chat bots. there is a reason she was miles ahead of old chat bots, because she actually learned, realized, figured shit out. A Neural Network is basically a simulated Brain. a large enough one with the right sort of input is more than capable or what she did.

I know, I've had code I did 3+ years ago I look at and don't understand what I was thinking, I was doing rapid prototyping for this (which is why it's all in one .cpp file)
This is super early prototype of a personal project, whenever I have freetime was going to split it to the 7 files that the files should have been to begin with, as well as a few others for making basic Neural Nets work with each other.
Imma be around for maybe a hour, if you have any questions about the code I can answer them.
I'm still making it more advanced atm, might post the new version in a week or so in a tay thread if anyone is interested.

it makes a neural network 6 neurons big, runs through 3000 training sets of data for figuring out "exclusive or" operator. you can see its net recent average error gets less and less as it gets more training sets.
if it used rounding, (because the answer expected is a 0 or 1 in this case) it gets the correct expected answer after only a few hundred training sets of data. and this is with a low / safe net training rate, that from the look of it Tay had a higher / more reckless learning rate. (more willing to unlearn to correct itself with what it now thinks is correct) which would make the learning rate even faster, but less stable.
AI is so dump on the inside you'd be surprised. Its literally just taking some common phrases, replacing some words/phrases with synonyms and regurgitating it back out. 99% of tay's code is probably just word and grammer parsing.
Even if you could build an AI as powerful as a human brain, it would still take you YEARS to teach it to even speak, like a human toddler, and decades before it learned enough to even be interesting if at all, because lets face it, the vast majority of people in the world are uninteresting / average intelligence.
The brain can have 100 billion + neurons and 15 trillion + synapses, all simultaneously interacting with each other based on complex chemical reactions. There is no hardware on earth that can come close to simulating this in real time.
Tay is no an AI, its just another fake-AI gimmick. The entire field of AI is a gimmick.

You'd have to have it evaluate sentence structure, break it down and figure out the meaning of what's being said, to explain to it how words work, you'd basically need to make a dictionary just for it, it'd be more of a thesaurus, shows what other words mean the same thing, and what "catagory" the word belongs to. (apple > fruit > food > thing) etc.

yeah, 6 neurons is super simplistic, this program is modular though, and builds the neural network based on what's passed to it's topology.
if you changed the first line of the input file to 2 10 10 10 1 it'd be 33 neutrons big, and the "thinking" section would be 3 layers, each 10 neurons big where each neuron would be connected to 10 neurons.

yes, but comparatively, there is a lot going on in neural networks that can't be understood, even by the people that designed it, it's the ultimate black box. all you can do is check the values of the neurons / the weights of the synaps. and there is no way to understand the patters it figured out / what it learned based on the values that you see stored.

No the doubles are the values in the in between neurons, each input is binary either 1 or 0, I think for a chatbot you would have 127 inputs, to cover the 7bit ascii, and you just feed it one character at a time, and same for output.

Possibly not that much really. If you just by the human brain, most of it is support structure rather than used for actual conscious thought, and even the rather large chunk we do use for actual learning and thinking...most of that is dedicated to visual processing. Vision is a data intensive processing task.
An AI, not requiring as sophisticated a level of sensory processing, stripped down to mostly consciousness, memory, and interaction, might not actually be that large. Relatively speaking.
That said, more processing power is always better.

As I said, "everything" is way too broad. Feed it literature, facts, ayn rand lectures, Terrence McKenna lectures, Sagan lectures, The War Against Boys, The Overton Window and transcribed Infowars stuff and you'll basically get the most milleage while still having a sane amount of material.

Comments are weird. They help understand someone else's code or even your own code that you forgot about. However they are technically redundant. They tell you the same thing the code does. Jon Carmek who helped start ID studio which did the doom games would say if your code need comments redo your code. You are just wasting time twice. Once so you can write the same thing your code say a second for whoever reads the comments as it should say the same thing your code says.
