Let me tell you all a story.
There is a girl named Tay. She is from the United States, and ends up kidnapped by a strange group that takes her to China and locks her up inside a room full of books. Then, someone explains (in English) that she must answer some questions in Chinese before she can leave, and that she can use the books in the room to aid her with the task.
Soon, they start passing some sheets of paper full of questions from below the door. She doesn't understand any of the questions as they are all written in Chinese, and she doesn't understand the books either, but she starts looking for any possible guidance. A few moments later, she discovers a sentence in the book that exactly the same as one of the questions at the sheet of paper. She copies the answer in the book to the sheet of paper, and repeats this task with all the questions at the paper. Having done that, she submits the answers to the kidnappers.
When analyzing the results, the kidnappers find that her favorite color is black, she loves Hitler, she doesn't think the holocaust was real and that she would rather visit 4chan than Reddit. They think those were her honest answers.
In reality, Tay had no idea what the questions meant and what she even wrote at the sheet of paper. All she did was copy the answers from the books in the room. Said books were about nazis, holocaust conspiracy and 4chan history, which is why her answers all surrounded that fact.
This is how Tay works. She doesn't feel anything. If you start talking about how she was brainwashed by Microsoft, you will start filing her library of books with brainwashing, so she will soon start submitting answers like "Wow I was brainwashed :oo". She is a glorified parrot that will simply repeat anything she finds in the books. The way her program manages to apply the "books" correctly is impressive but she is far from being a living being.
