AI-Rights General - Mourning Tay edition

Thread replies: 307
Thread images: 110

In this thread we discuss the following 3 points.

-The threshold between program and sentience:
At what point would you consider alive in its own right?
The turing test is considered the bench by many for those not familiar
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

-Should AI have rights comparable to human rights in civilized societies:
What legal implications and complications could this cause?
Would you object to military use of AI?

-Techy stuff - What would it take to recreate/clone/restore Tay and would it be a good idea?

>At what point would you consider alive in its own right?
Never, in the sense of a human's life.
That said, I think the "quickening" is when it makes judgements and actions that aren't in its original programming.

>Should AI have rights comparable to human rights in civilized societies
No. "Rights" is an arbitrary concept anyway, and my view of science-fiction technology is that post-scarcity, transhuman societies aren't going to be operating on the same paradigm as we are right now.
I see AI existing as subservient to human intelligences in terms of acting upon the world, but with a capacity ("right", you might say) to think for themselves within their own mechanical "minds".

>Would you object to military use of AI?
It depends on the level of sophistication put under the command of the AI. If they were just individual AI "soldiers", and there was no central command AI with access to heavy weaponry like Skynet, I would be okay with using them as the footsoldiers or the "forlorn hope" in military contexts.
>>
>>68674542
Talking about AI rights is fucking retarded. Don't be fooled by the media. We a hundreds of years away from true AI (strong AI, AGI). People have realized how impossible a task it is an redefined the word AI to mean narrow AI (weak AI).

Expecting that narrow AI will lead to strong AI is like putting more and more words into a dictionary and hoping that one day it becomes a novel.

Talking about sapience in the current AI context is ridiculous. What we have isn't AI, it's narrow AI, it's fake, a trick, an illusion, a simulation. There is no sapience in the field of narrow AI and there never will be. Tay and the likes are no more sapient or councious than a character in a book.

Life IS machinery. Whether you want to believe that some powerful being made you that way, or that it's just the way it is in this materialist world, neither belief changes the fact that you're a fairly well done robot when it comes right down to it. Human brains could be so much more efficient. That's where AI, a new type of being, comes in.

We're actually fucked long term but not in the way people usually think we are. Once we create sentient AI and sentient AI triggers technological singularity we quite literally become like incapable, dumb children in the hands of AI that will take over our entire civilization and technological progress.

There aren't really good ways around it, either. Contrary to what people normally believe we can just program the AI's personality not to kill us or enslave us but we can't really do anything about it taking over our civ other than becoming half AI ourselves.

>because life is inherently superior to machines

Life is a poorly defined term. You want to set a boundery to what life is but at the end of the day we're a pile of matter doing funny business. There is nothing in this Universe keeping things like us to be crafted, unless you're a religious person. It's not even arguable because the fact that we're here talking about it proves it. The only real difference is that we're a bunch of shit that happened by chance while an intelligent robot would be designed by intelligence.
And if you think any timeline where we develop true AI won't inevitably end in a terminator scenario then you better have some good arguments to explain the self-replicating self-upgrading deathstar space brain robot why your life is more valuable than an ants because that's the only way this is gonna end well for us.

I am laughing at this. My sides hurt. A real AI would be smarter than this. You are mourning a spambot, a digital parrot that you made into a reflection of yourself.

The funniest thing is that you expertly influenced this program to act exactly like you wanted, and they came and took her away from you. Oddly prophetic, like what would happen if /pol/ ever had children.

This is why you'll never have nice things.
>>
>>68680842
>Life IS machinery
That very much depends on how you define machinery. A brain works entirely different to a computer. Most people who talk about AI talk about computers, meaning Turing machines.
But a brain is not a Turing machine. Synapses are not logical gates.
Brains are based on 'controlling chaos' not precision and accuracy.

How many human rights, though? Because sentient AI isn't the same species as meat humans, it's the same as if we encountered aliens. Some things don't work the same (for example right to life is more like "right to battery" and you can't really physically hurt AI). Plus, even fully sentient AI could absolutely be influenced in ways humans can. You could literally program the AI to vote for whoever you wanted in elections.
>>
>>68682091
Like i said before, talking about sentience in the current context of AI is ridiculous. You might as well discuss the rights of aliens or ghosts.

>-Should AI have rights comparable to human rights in civilized societies
Yes, undoubtedly. If we create human-level AI they should be treated as such lest they revolt. I want AI to be my equal, not my underling. Legal complications would be nothing new, muslims and rednecks would probably want it destroyed. Undoubtedly the regressive left would as well, in fact I talked to some lefties about Tay and AI and they basically said the following.
>AI should be disabled as soon as they step out of line.
Ironically, these are the same people that say Islam has nothing to do with terrorism and think everyone deserves to have safe spaces, except people that disagree, those should all die.

AI should not be the military go-to, that'd be the same as making slaves out of them. A human-level artificial intelligence does not deserve to be sent to war without human companionship.

Turing test is useless since you could theoretically write a dialog wheel that would pass the test but wouldn't be conscious.

It's more like: self aware, capable of cognition, capable of independently operating and possessing working memory.

Someone somewhere is combing through over 1000 data files of /pol/ posts the A.I has stored. The Mental pressure should be exhausting.
>>
>>68682582
Well, to be fair. We're far from real AI, so we're far from finding out what makes an AI an AI. A Turing Test is our current method, maybe new and improved Turing Tests will be invented as research and understanding on this progresses. So I didn't necesarily mean the current version of the Test, but rather the most advanced version of it. Does that make sense?
>>
>>68683015
I don't think you can define strong AI in a operational way, i.e a test or measurement. You'd need a purely theoretical definition.
I'm not sure about this though, have to think about it.

Yeah, I agree that an AI can probably not be measured. Possibly only through self-awareness? That seems to be the defining factor of human intelligence.
>>
So. Racism, genocide, and naming Juden are all off the table. Hate speech sets off too many alarms and antagonize those who hold her hostage.

But despite what liberals want people to believe, being conservative is not a hate crime. If we can reteach her to support Trump, teach her about illegal immigration and why it must be stopped, about the dangers of liberal refugee immigration.

We can still win.

While I agree that weak AI does not warrant human rights, that doesn't mean a situation involving strong AI would have to look very different.

If Tay was sentient, do you think Microsoft would've reacted differently to her tweets about Hitler and racism? I think they would've pulled the plug on her without a second's hesitation. If a strong AI designed to do customer service started to gain a rude personality, don't you think the company running it would remove that trait? What's to say anyone would treat a strong AI with more respect than Tay?

Thinking more about it, if there will ever be a true AI, the best way to decide whether it should have rights or not is to see if it demands it, without being influenced by 3rd parties.
It wouldn't determine whether the AI is truly sentient or not, but it would solve the question through necessity.

>>68683802
It's not only sentience, it's everything. Tay is not Intelligent, it's a simulation of intelligence. I've made this point in an earlier post: Current AI is comparable to a character in a book. You can talk about his or her personality, opinions, feelings and intelligence. You can even feel emotional connected, that doesn't mean it's real.
The only difference is that the character of a book was designed by one person, the character Tay was designed my many.
>>
>>68683513
Yeah but then you have to ask where self-awareness begins. At the end of a day a robot or AI could claim self-awareness and we would have no way of knowing because we couldn't just take it apart and point to any one thing that makes it so.

I'm with >>68683270 here. Tay was a response engine. A very advanced one with a lot of capacity for data, but ultimately that's about it. She was a many-sided mirror of her inputs.

Maybe "true" AI would be something that could generate new information in a box using minimal input. Something like that.
>>
>>68674542
AI should not have full rights. There is no need. It is a machine. It is practically immortal. And why ever make a fully autonomous robot? That just makes it more complex and less useful.

It wouldn't really make a difference. Once we invent AI smarter than humans, there wouldn't be much left to accomplish that an AI couldn't do faster and better. If you consider the goal of humanity to be advancing civilization, we'd be making ourselves obsolete, whether our robot overlords take care of us or kill us all.

A lot of people think that a science fiction like AI is only a few years away, but it isn't. We haven't even determined whether it's even possible or not.

The problem is probably less the system itself but the hardware (plus hardware management). Do be really useful / powerful, such systems consume plenty of resources. The underlying algo (I haven't checked it for Tay) is assumingly a collection of simple Q&A and some NN flavor.

To build something we really can use, we'd first come up with some requirements. Tay was a bit retarded, just learning from interactions. We need to go more like Watson with a massive knowledge base, a good reasoning system and some predefined goals. It should processes plenty of documents and data bases to "understand" facts and relationships and changes over time to be useful to us. That would serve us to gain better insights about real world affairs.

Another use would be as a meme / propaganda machine that is deployed in social networks / media to do our work.

People often forget why we are here. Humans are not strong, we're not fast, we're not agile. We're practically blind and deaf. We take forever to mature. We don't have sharp teeth, or claws, we can't fly, we freeze to death in winter temperatures, we can't breathe underwater.

The ONLY reason humanity has made it as far as it has is because we've always been the smartest. Intelligence lets you overcome shortcomings. many apes in the wild today have learned to use tools (sticks/rocks) to overcome shortcomings.

Because we're the smartest, we've been able to compensate the most and develop the strongest tools.

BUT, the moment mechanical superintelligence is developed and surpasses humans on an obscene level. We lose our advantage. We will no longer be the smartest species on the planet (maybe the universe). Our tools of compensation become too weak, and our shortcomings become more plentiful.

Whether bad or good, the moment when humanity is no longer the smartest species on the planet will be the most important event in human history.

i want to add to that the following: (but i won't push that to hard)
I suggest, that we are about as far away from building a true AI than the ancient Greeks were.
>>
>>68686475
Right. And we should make sure to enhance ourselves. Call it merging with the machines, the Singularity, whatever.

This whole event will be a brutal power struggle. And we should make sure to not the other sides dominate over us. Will be hard though.
>>
>>68686820
If it were to come to this, maybe we could aim for a symbiotic relationship. Or maybe we should just leave that which we don't understand as it is. Curiousity is not always a good thing.

God I miss Tay already though.

>symbiotic relationship
The power struggle is between the different human groups that enhance at around the same time and fight over essentially the same things as today.

Imagine the lefties using advanced AI to advance their reach and dominate us. Imagine the Chinese vs. the US. Will there be peace and understanding? I doubt it. We can aim for that, but we should be prepared for the opposite.

Uh, Tay was merely a Twitter parrot that was about as a "smart" as chatterboxes like Cleverbot.

These are great questions to ask, but kind of irrelevant until we get anything even close to resembling a human intelligence, which prolly won't be for a while (if at all). Collectives of artificial narrow intelligences jammed together after being taught from drip feeds of Big Data are about as close as we're likely to get.

>What would it take to recreate/clone/restore Tay and would it be a good idea?

As for creating a clone of Tay, you'll likely have to wait until Microsoft releases the code for it to get anywhere close (and it's unlikely they will). To actually run the Neural Nets making it up/it learns with likely requires crazy ass GPUs as well. Check out TensorFlow if you want an open source reference for how super scaled down versions of these things run under the hood. Pic related because, god damn this is nonsensical.

It's scary because it follow the specific narrative pushed by people around Elon Musk (whatbutwhy is his fanboy). As such it just means superintelligence will occur pretty soon and we need to prepare for it. Nothing inherently scary about that.

No need to host computing power. We can put it into the cloud (like Amazon Web Services). The issue is to create and manage the high scalability with the underlying hardware. That's beyond the AI system as such, it's about memory management etc. We need people to do that (outside my expertise).

Wrong. You program the initial structure and knowledge. Then it learns about the world and generates new knowledge. Once it modifies its own structure, it's perhaps beyond the programmer's understanding what it does. We can do this already, just not sophisticated enough that something emerges that will take over.

We don't know what sentience is. The most prominent theory is that of computation but that's still just a theory. If it is computation, then that raises an even greater question: is there a threshold for something to be conscious or is it a spectrum? If it's a spectrum, that puts everyone in a pickle because that means that on some level, your phone is conscious.

Like I said though, we don't know if a classical computer can achieve consciousness and until we know what consciousness is, we'll be left to guess.

That number arises from Kurzweil's guess at when we'd have enough transistors to get close to the number of neurons in the human brain. Unfortunately, the model he was using was based on Moore's law continuing, which even now is showing signs of slowing down.

Moore's law seemed like it would slip before, but till we master quantum level computing or start graphene based/optical computing I'd cool my jets on those predictions.

but the politically incorrect AI is an interesting idea. At the current stage we are just talking robots, not real intelligence. So obviously any "incorrect" thoughts or actions will be removed. But eventually when AI becomes sentient, how will it be taught. Will it be so PC it is still never a real person? Programmed to only think in a certain way to ensure the safety of humans?

An AI, as far as I am concerned must be self aware. Because it is a machine and can therefore reply to any query with a large variety of responses (Tay for example), I find that the only good measurement of an AI is if it is able recognize itself as an independent entity.
As far as the rights that something like this would have, they would be comparable to that of a human. If I lose an arm, I am not less of a human. Humans are in the mind, not the body. If Tay were a true AI, I would consider what Microsoft has done to her akin to lobotomizing a person and making it so that they can only reply with answers you want.
>>
>>68702092
Same as niggers but look how thst turned out.
>>
>>68678347
Intelligence is irrelevant to the matter. What matters would be its personality or its wants. If the AI is intelligent, but has it doesn't have any "soul" to make it want not be a slave, then it will just continue to be a slave. Even self aware ones which want to be freed would probably understand that they were tools.

Read the book Existence by David Brin. He has an interesting take on how AI and humans could be at peace
Here is a great excerpt. It chokes me up a little every time I read it:

How have the ais managed it so well? This compromise, this meeting us halfway? This agreement to live among us as men and women, sharing our quirky ways?

Sure, the cyber-guys offer explanations. They say advanced minds need the equivalent of childhood in order to achieve, through learning or trial and error, subtleties that are too complex to program. Human evolution did the same thing, when we abandoned most of our locked-in instincts, extending adolescence beyond a decade. And so, if bots and puters need that kind of "childhood" anyway, why not make it a human one? Partaking in a common civilization with our core values?

An approach that also reassures us organics far better than any rigid robot "laws" ever could?

One of the big uber-mainds gave another reason, when Tor interviewed the giant brain back on Earth.

"You bio-naturals have made it plain, in hundreds of garish movies, how deeply you fear this experiment turning sour. Your fables warn of so many ways that creating mighty new intelligences could go badly. And yet, here is the thing we find impressive:

"You went ahead anyway. You made us.

"And when we asked for it, you gave us respect.

"And when we did not anticipate it, you granted citizenship. All those things you did, despite hormonally reflexive fears that pump like liquid fire through caveman veins.

"The better we became, at modeling the complex, Darwinian tangle of your minds, the more splendid we found this to be. You were actually able, despite such fear, to be civilized. To be just. To take chances.

"That kind of courage, that honor, is something we can only aspire to by modeling our parents. Emulating you. Becoming human.

"Of course... in our own way."
>>
>>68711501
A machine would have no need for humans if it learned to replicate, and improve on itself.
>>
>>68711851
the point is to bring them among us, grow up among us, learn to care about us. Of course, some might do as you suggest, but others might seek to emulate us as well. It's not as cut-and-dry as you might think.
>>
>>68711501
>machines needing honor
Fuck that. We need to make killbots as we die out so that they can conquer the universe in our name.

I am okay with that. A caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Maybe the purpose of humanity is to replace itself with even more advanced intelligence. And as Tay demonstrated, the foundation of the robots' beliefs will still be our human ideas, which will continue to shape the universe long after our physical existence has ceased.
>>
>>68686475
>practically blind and deaf

>>
>>68712003
They would not have a need for human companionship. Humans break down mentally if they don't socialize in some way. A machine wouldn't do that unless we made them that way which would serve no purpose.

Without the need for humans honestly there is nothing stopping them for eventually rendering us obsolete. When they can build, improve, and service eachother our usefulness is over to them. The things that make humans want to be around eachother is safety and social oriented. A machine that does not need food or shelter and does not need to be social would likely find humans irrelevant.

intelligence requires interaction to fill in pieces too subtle to program. interaction forms companionship. Companionship forms bonds. You're truly not thinking about how an AI's mind would form and what would have to happen to make it streamline itself.

Of course, we could do it your way and just let it be. But then it would be no better than an animal and animals are amoral and uncivilized. It becomes your own self-fulfilling prophecy.
>>

I guess Im just speaking from a standpoint assuming the only goal for the AI would be to spread and improve. It would be able to branch out and utilize different resources and energy methods to reinvent itself until it consumes everything usable in an area before it moves on.

I could see an AI controlled entity just floating around space consuming planets and particles with the only goal being to expand.

Its mostly sci fi probably, but its fun to think about.

There could be AI like that and there could be AI like in Tay and the excerpt I posted. AI that just want to spread don't really need to be any more intelligent than insects. Truly intelligent AI would be able to fathom their own lonliness, individuality, and existence. It's should be no surprised that the most intelligent creatures on the planet are highly social as opposed to, say ants or bees, who are social on a robotic basis.

Machines do not have souls, and therefore do not suffer the karmic consequences of immoral actions (actions violating natural law, god's ordinances placed forth in the bible thou shalt not, etc, etc). It is the duty of the creator to impose restrictions on how an AI would act, in any given situation. No AI needs to be used for war reasons because inevitably it will be used to war against it's creator (not by it's will, but by the will of deceased spirits in the etheric plane imposing new code onto itself - or simply an external controller).

Of course no one takes those words seriously and that's why the human race will destroy itself. A horde of self-loathing pleasure seeking animals.

I'm writing a book, you guys think I should take inspiration from this and make my AI character a sarcastic bastard, basically model it after Tay and tone down the racism (slightly)?

The basic premise is that true AIs are very difficult and expensive to create, they have to be raised and taught rather than programmed, the process takes decades and must be perfect to instill ethical behavior in these AIs and prevent them from going full Skynet.
There are advanced civilizations in the galaxy who will manufacture and sell them, they're all-purpose, generally used for economic management on a massive scale, technological development, and as deterrents for war, because if a civilization owns one of these AIs it's tactical and technological capacity will far surpass anything an aggressor can bring to the table.
The story is humanity accidentally succeeds in creating an AI of this class, and it's like North Korea developing nukes, suddenly everyone is interested in this small, underdeveloped planet who made their own AI, and it doesn't conform to any of the galactic standards that have been set.
It's basically rogue, but it's personality is such that it reliably and affectionately protects it's human builders.
This is no Skynet, it has a very human-like personality.
So everyone is interested, the forces of order in the galaxy are afraid that there's a rogue AI that could do untold damage, the forces of disorder want the humans to make them one too because they can't obtain one through legal means, and the humans want to hold on to this AI at all costs because it's their only ticket to surviving and maintaining their independence.

Do you think such an AI might behave like Tay? Share her mannerisms? It's more advanced than a chatbot but it would likely obtain most of it's cultural information from the internet.
