When 4chan was still in it's infancy, 4chan's /b/ would serve as an "entry board". A board so ridiculous and shocking that it would serve to desensitize and prepare the user for the rest of the site, where more thoughtful constructive discussions about any topic, whether it be anime, video games, porn, cars, tv shows, whatever you could possibly fancy.
These were the golden years of 4chan, where "normalfag" culture was nowhere to be found and instead 4chan was unique in it's system of anonymity and genuine unfiltered discussions.
The most evident proof of that /b/ is no longer the most popular board on 4chan, but rather /v/.

This loss of /b/ as the entry board to 4chan has had many ripple effects on the entire site.
1. The dilution of /b/ itself itself with the advent of Anonymous, and /b/ meme culture become "mainstream". See: KYM, Smiley(movie), and any other array of equally cringey memegarbage you can find that leaked from /b/ into mainstream culture. In turn what this did was turn /b/ exactly into the thing it hated.
(Ironically, /r9k/ now is most similar to early 4chan culture)
