So... here's how bond works. The judge sets an amount commensurate with the severity of the crime, and the accused's ability to pay. When he shows up to the actual trial, he gets it back. The idea is that it's so much money that it'll prevent him from just running away. If he doesn't show up, the court keeps it.
But then you have guys called bondsmen who exist to front you money when you can't afford your pay. You pay them 10%, they pay the court in full, when you show up they get their money back, and keep what you paid them.
If you don't show up, they can perform a citizen's arrest on you and turn you into the police to make sure they can get their money back. Or they can come after you in civil court to get back the money you made them lose.
The upshot is that guy probably had to front $25,000, which I'm sure he didn't have. His parents probably paid it. I would have just stayed in jail for a few months.
