I'm working through the novel right now, and the emphasis isn't so much on how terrible everything is, because it's really not. It's more of a "what was lost". The Germans are so focused on progress and science to the extent of everything else that they only just started building public TV stations in the late 60s. They narrowly avoid public unrest and outcry due to economic collapse (exterminating populations is not cheap) thanks to the spectacle of things like rocket trips to mars. The Pacfic (Japan) is more concerned with public order, and the greater good; This leaves them at odds with the germans, who ultimately maintain a trade imbalance thanks to their previous drive towards the science and technologies. However, they avoid having to worry about dissidents and such like the Reich thanks to the same emphasis - as long as one understand their place and shows proper respect, they will make it, if not flourish.
And all the while, a man writes a novel - what if the United States had won the war? A preposterous idea, to be sure, but...what if? How would the world be different?

In the end you learn Hitler is one of the most rational people in German command who is trying to prevent a cold war with Japan going hot. Reinhard Heydrich attempts to assassinate Hitler to go to war with Japan and a member of the American Waffen SS stops him who was being painted as a villain archetype at first but later develops into a rational character. The jews (often referred to as just "the Semites") often work with members of the Nazi Anti Hitler crowd as pawns and further gain the admonishment of less Conservative Nazi circles by doing so that otherwise might have given them a pass.

I've only seen the first 3 episodes, but although the setting is the same, the story seems quite different from how I remember the book.
The book was more about the lies that a government tells its people in order to secure their obedience or common purpose, to keep the country from fragmenting. The book was written in reaction to post-WW2 changes in government and society, the setup of the Communism Vs Capitalism cold war and so on.
I have an interest in the work of Leo Strauss and the myth of the nation, or noble lie, so that sort of subject matter is up my alley, as /pol may one day find out.
The TV show seems to be more about the ebil nazis, although I can see a lot of Americans who rather wished they were back in the 1950s liking the sound of this fictional post-WW2 society with its stability, its nostalgic simplicity to life and everyones role within society.
Who knows, maybe the entire show will sort of back-fire, and people will be enticed by the 1950s nostalgia and long for a more ordered and certain society...even if that means the "loss of freedom" we have today. Although when every phone call, email, and text message is being read and archived by the government, every credit card purchase stuch in a data warehouse....one might argue that any freedom we have today is illusory.
I wonder if there will be a debate after the series about such things.... I suppose it depends on how it ends. Lets hope the producer and director dont wimp out.
