I think most of the supposedly 'better off' places dreaming of becoming independent nations don't realize it's a dog-eat-dog world out there. Being part of the US means you can throw your supposed huge balls around. Being a country with a population smaller than the Netherlands means that suddenly, people will take you a lot less seriously, and contrary to the Netherlands, you won't even be able to claim that you ruled the Spice Island once or that people can get high and buy supreme quality escorts in your capital.
