It varies. When I was in paris ~4 years ago all the big museums like the Louvre, Centre Pompidu, etc, all had metric ass loads of FAMAS wielding french military on patrol. Like a shit load. They had people on top of buildings with long range rifles, and guys on the ground with assualt rifles. I'm pretty sure it'd be tough to do much, unless the soldiers were pulled out for other defense measures due to the attacks as of late.

I don't know man, those locations have a lot of importance to most people. The people that are that far to the left are a minority even in Europe. The inevitably huge number of tourists killed in attacks on places like that would be pretty hard to sweep under the rug too, especially if it was a series of attacks.
