We already have a free college program. It's called the GI bill. For 3 years of service (and it doesn't even have to be in a combat roll), the federal government will pay your tuition, book fees, and housing costs for 8 semesters. The bottom 60% of households (in regards to their annual earnings) haven't seen a shift upwards in the income they generate. If people were poor in the 60s and the amount of money a family earns now hasn't changed then a family now is just as poor. In return we get almost free healthcare and universal interest-free loans for university which are charged inflation-only interest and don't have to be repaid until you're earning over 50,000/year. Uni fees themselves are capped between 6k (arts, nursing etc) to 10k (medicine, law etc) per year. Oh and most people will get some form of government assistance - I was getting 18,000/year for my two years then I got $40k/year worth of scholarships and now my income's too high to qualify for gov assistance

I went one of the most expensive private colleges in the usa for a degree in art at over 40K a year. These people bitching about college fees that amount to hardly anything after you get working is entitled and greedy since college is a choice, if you save up a bit before going, work while you are in school maybe if you have nothing saved, and get a proper job after it is easy to pay the debt off and the expense is worth it because you have a job that will pull that money back to you.
I am glad I paid that much though, it gave me quality training to secure a GOOD job in the industry and continue to grow, although yeah the price was a bit disgusting. I make around 130K a year now with raises every other year so I am content with what I paid vs what I get from that now. The market is flooded with students now though that also went to shitty cheap schools for the same major who will accept anyone and any portfolio, but none of them end up in the successful jobs really. You get the quality you pay for with a lot of schools because it goes into the facilities, teachers, etc.
If education is all free the people going to the private paid schools would be the ones getting hired over the free handout brats since the purchased quality of education would be much better and the quality of student going would be higher I think. I would say I am a weird lucky case except most of the people I work with are from my school, Cal Arts, and other equally expensive schools so obviously the money is giving students results.
