Modern Macedonia (as in, the sovereign nation) is actually just a bunch of slavs who migrated to that area almost a millennium after Alexander's time, and now pretend to be the descendants of the same people, and living on the same land, that Alexander belonged to, even though, geographically, they're miles North above the historic kingdom of Ancient Macedonia (whose historic boundaries are mostly located in modern-day Northern-Greece).
Ancient Macedonia during Classical Greece (6th century BC - Alexander's time) was considered to be 'Hellenic', but there were a some people in the Southern Greek city-states who didn't respected them as such, and considered them to be less civilized and culturally different. Alexander I of Macedonia in 460 BC was denied from participating in the Olympic Games (which only Hellenic states could participate in) because Macedonia was considered barbarian / non-Hellenic, but he managed to persuade them in letting them in by claiming the country's lineage from Argos. And there were a bunch of other similar accounts during the 5th and 4th century that were likely just done out of propaganda purposes in-between the city-states.
But genealogically, Macedonians were very likely the same as their Southern Greek neighbors.
