Trump said he would cooperate with Russia to fight ISIS and improving relations with Russia overall.
Now, both countries have their imperialistic ambitions. Both countries are already fighting ISIS, even if non-coordinately.
Cooperating with Russia would mean giving up on Syria, thus giving Russia a naval base in the Mediterranean, and allowing the Iran pipeline to be built, benefiting both Russia and Iran, and in some sense betraying Qatar and making the US seem weak and untrustworthy. As well as losing all money spent on the Syrian war until now. Rebels without US support would be quickly routed from Syria and could either flee to Iraq and start another civil war, or spread throughout the Middle East and increase terrorism in the region.
Trump has also said a war with Iran is a viable option to protect Saudi interests, regretting the lifting of sanctions. Improving relations with Iran seems to not be a possibility, and Russia would also not cut ties with its closest ally in the region for US promises that could be broken in the next presidential mandate, if not in the same.
On the other hand, for Russia to give up on Syria would not only make it seem weaker, but create another unstable Islamist government in the region, which will be worse for everyone in the long run.
How then does Trump plan on cooperating with Russia in the ME and averting WW3? Even if they destroy ISIS there is still a lot of conflicting interests between them. If we are to believe the official US position, ISIS is just a rogue state but it's not even the most important topic of the Syrian crisis.
More, even, why did Putin commend Donald Trump so emphatically, if it is so clearly obvious the US cannot right now improve relations with Russia without giving up on so many objectives?
