The original photo isn't even composed very well imo. I prefer the edit (i'm not the editor btw) and I think the duality you speak of can remain more subtley in the opposition of colours [blue and orange].

Yea it doesn't fully convince me too, I personally wish I could just keep the cormorants in focus and have a blurry background, unfortunately given the whole setup it was not possible.

your composition needs to be more to the right. the reds are over saturated and have far too many pinks/magentas in. the entire image also needs desaturating. add some graduated filters from the left and lower side of the frame to darken and soften these areas, they are distracting. 1/50th of a second is a little too slow too, get your ISO up to 600~ and speed the shutter, this will give you a sharper effect, noise reduction can be used for the small amount of ISO but also for image softening, which it needs at the moment.

Too much headspace, too little at the foot. I dislike not including more of the tray. That said, it's a subtle way to introduce a little extra discomfort at looking at severed fish heads. Same for the yellow cast (did you shoot all of these through a yellow filter or is that just the way the film behaved?)

I thibk I really just need to get out and do it more, the thing that sucks going from news and corporate video is that often times there isn't much time or wiggle room to do my own thing. Subjects are usually already decided and composition in news video, usually, is more for efficiency than anything else.

A lot of people like to say "Every picture should tell a story" which is about as broad and vague as that saying is.
Personally I think every photo needs to have a clear purpose, whether it's capturing a moment in time or a pleasing aesthetic such as a beautiful landscape or abstract picture. However your subjects are boring as shit.
while maintaining that, try to branch out with trying to find better subjects, and exploring light. for example. when walking in to a room, observe how many lamps there is, and how those lamps interact with each ohter, the objects in the room, shadows etc. youll get better in no time.
