Bear spray is illegal to use on another person but where I was is true bear country/cougar country. The trail that I was hiking on is fairly popular at the start but about 5km in there is noone. In the morning saw a helicopter doing sweeps near North Dome

I've got a few things that I see reoccurring while hiking, that grind my gears:

There are a couple of factors that would make this not always so, imo.
Some trails can be harder to go down than up, particularly eroded trails.
If the people coming down have heavy packs and the people going up are dayhikers with no packs, I'd say yield to the pack group.
