The V-Strom is fine for the city.
The NC is the perfect commuter bike, very tame and even has a large storage space with enough room to store a helmet. But it has about as much character as a washing machine. It's the most boring bike on the planet, literally a glorified scooter.

The nc750x is perfect in every way, except for the engine being boring. But it really doesn't have flaws beyond that. Not expensive, great mpg, great storage space, some low end torque, reliable. I'd buy the strom.

The only tracks near me require you to have a valid license for a certain period of time, either 6 months or a year. Which is stupid.
I'm already amassing gear and getting used to wearing it. I have an entry level pair of boots that I wear when I'm cruising. They were super weird at first because I was used to wearing canvas shoes, and I kept missing shifts because I couldn't feel the lever. Now that doesn't happen any more than it did when I rode in just shoes. And I look that much more like a storm trooper.
I'd also want to do a track day with other riders, and I don't really have any riding friends.
As far as upgrading goes, the only thing I really want is a little more torque and a higher redline. When I go from a light, I'm in 3rd gear by the time I get to the other side of the intersection. Every single other thing about the CBR300R is pretty awesome.
At least now I have pretty great clutch and left foot skills.

- got some new boring black handle grips since mine were ripped on the sides from sliding, 20€ for that shit where I could get some sweet ones for half online but wahetevr
- they switched my handlebar, I was using an aftermarket one so I gave them my OEM one I had stored home
- They checked my turn lights, I installed them and somehow my left one wasn't working and they put it working ( I had problems with some cables, like one was missing or something but I just suck)

Without any kind of condescension, a huge number of people will say to start out on a smaller motorcycle. There are a lot of very good, reasonably inexpensive bikes that are way more forgiving than a supersport. If he's never ridden a motorcycle before and he's 15, putting him on an inline 4 supersport is a bad idea, no matter how respectful or careful he is with the throttle. You get into situations that make you panic whether you think you will or not, and someone with no skill will not always have the ability to react. This goes quadruply so because he's not even old enough to drive. I'm not being a dick, I'm not trying to show that I know better or say you're a bad person or any of that shit. There are a lot of grown men who either can't handle these machines, or aren't mature enough to use their power without hurting themselves. You can have a fucking lot of fun on a 300cc motorcycle either way.
No matter what you end up doing, at least pay for him to take an MSF course. It's boring and stupid and gay, but it might save his ass. Sorry for lashing out.
