GS500 is great for learning, just don't spend too much on buying one. I bought mine for $1500AUD and sold it for $3000AUD, just have to find the right deal and then the right sucker to sell it to.
I rode 1000km round trip in one day on a GS500F, in the middle of the Australian summer and it didn't miss a beat. They didn't keep making it to this day because it is a failure.
It is a budget commuter/beginner bike with no frills.

The ER-6n is objectively the better bike, but I'd recommend getting a GS 500 for around 1.5k (under 40k km, no rust, runs perfectly) and saving the rest towards your first "real" bike or repairs / replacement when you crash.
Also look into the Honda CB 500, it's basically the GS but better in every way. Much more comfortable, good mileage, liquid cooled, still very cheap but better quality and an engine that's not from the 80s.

Yes if you own a new bike. It's probably one of the best mods you can do if your bike is a couple years old. Rubber lines over time will expand and crack, obviously steel lines wont.

Yeah it's fucking dumb, the guy came over to look at it today. The exhaust has scratches on it so it means the whole thing must be replaced, £660 for a standard exhaust!
Also, he says because it was a front impact, the front wheel and tyre must be replaced, even though it looks fine. Surely you'd want to actually take it off and examine it before making that decision? So that's at least £300 there.
Everything else plus labour put repairing it at £2800.
