WEW LADDIES

Carb #2 decided to go on a rampage and flood like never seen before. Then it goes on and floods #1 through the air hose.

It's so bad fuel almost literally falls out of the carb.

I wonder what could have happened...
>>
>>15263807
Either the tank is so fucking rusty it clogged the carb again or the float got stuck,
or maybe gravity fed doesn't quite work with this bike?

Tank is rusty, but I'm running the tank filter and an inline filter, fuel comes out spotless.

I rode about 100km yesterday and commuted to work today and it ran pretty well, I think the gravity feed is okay, it also floods like a mad fuck with a silicon hose attached to a small reservoir, and I've been wrenching on the bike with that system for a few months now and no issues. Float needles are brand new too.

Last time it started flooding it was like this it was on a similar time scale — worked fine for about 2 days, then started to flood like a mad cunt, but I think it was carb #4 back then. I could have put the float in another carb while reassembling though.

I'm starting to wonder if the float itself on that carb is fucked and over time it filled up. It's the second time carb #2 is fucking up

Thank you for your input regardless anon.

0-4 I go back out there and figure it out.
5-9 I watch GoT.
>>
>>15263807
I pull carbs and leak check them off the motorcycle for comfy convenience. I also run fuel filters. Tank strainers only stop the big turds.

Flooding is typically due to shit in needle/seat area, bad needle, sometimes bad seat, and sometimes bad or maladjusted float.

Gravity feed doesn't cause flooding. Carb problems cause flooding. Of course one should ensure the fuel shutoff works properly.

Chain lube is sticky. I'd use chain wax in a clutch cable (cables are not lines) if that's all I had.
>>

As someone who is here for 20 hours out of the day. This is a joke and you're wrong.
>>
>>15263871
>fuel comes out spotless

Yeah but the jets can get clogged with dust particles over the time,
it's worth cheking them.

>Last time it started flooding it was like this it was on a similar time scale
Rode about the same distance or without riding it?
did you set the float level when you changed them?

>I'm starting to wonder if the float itself on that carb is fucked and over time it filled up.
That's very possible, stick them in a glass with some fuel and see if they sink

All Italian motorcycles are not reliable by Japanese standards. They should never be a primary motorcycle. They are huge fun, but they are Italian and that means expensive to fix and maintain.

If you are an experienced mechanic the labor cost goes away, but not the money. If you aren't wallowing in money and lack something reliable to ride, leave Ducks alone.
>>
>>15263624
Yes. Good drivetrain, economical, reliable.

Racefags will insult, but they hate everything that isn't a brand new GP bike.

I've fixed plenty of wrecks for customers and self.

Break down what you need to do to get it usable then what you need to make it pretty.

Ebay is great for parts. Take your time. It's a great opportunity to grow your mechanic skills and those are worth more than many motorcycles. Wrenching your own shit is power, saves money, and gives you choices you'd never otherwise have.

Visit BRAND SPECIFIC forums and if possible get factory service manual. Many can be downloaded free from helpful posters.

>>
>>15263918
My fave leak check method is by dummy fuel tank but an extended fuel hose from baiku tank is fine.

I leave carbs on leak check for an hour or two if they don't leak immediately.

Check brand-specific forums for carb info and make DETAILED posts since responders cannot read minds.

Anti-seize is my friend (especially on exhaust fasteners and stainless hardware because stainless on stainless galls) and so is a torque wrench for heads and other critical fasteners. I've been wrenching long enough that common fasteners are no problem to torque by feel but that was acquired by learning with a torque wrench.

Impacts are for fastener REMOVAL unless they are adjustable and calibrated high dollar tools ya won't find in auto or bike shops.

I also use Loctite (correctly) because babby Jeebus hates dry threads. Fave is the red gel Loctite. For little fasteners, use a very small amount. No need to stock blue.

Yamabond, copper coat spray, and 3M/equivalent weatherstrip adhesive ('gorilla snot" since forever) are outstanding when used correctly.

Multibrand mechanic who has owned two Guzzis and worked on Ducks and Geese.

As with women, every motorcycle brand and model has owners who are blindly in love with them and pass off their idiosyncrasies as anything but real problems.

If you are interested in a particular make and model, visit forums and get a feel for what breaks often, what is expensive, and what you need to do to maintain your dream baiku.

I'm masochist enough to own a 1971 Norton Commando. It runs fine, but I would never contend it's a sane main ride. That's what my Honda Interceptor and Harley FXR (Evo, not Shovelhead) are for.

You can't go wrong by doing your homework. You can go expensively wrong if you don't.

Drove this route, start and end redacted to protect involved parties, east to west. First real change of direction was a roundabout marked with a red arrow. I fucked up, I was supposed to take the 3rd exit, took the 1.5th. Went too fast, landed in the ditch, practically let the bike down at that point, no horror no injury, one turn signal is hanging on its cable, shifter peg is somewhat bent but a few minutes and a hammer will fix that. Not sure about turn signal, but worst comes to worst I'll duct tape it. Apparently turning is harder to do if you're going fast, who knew?

Interestingly when I was trying to get the bike back on its wheels, I melted a hole straight through my riding pants. I touched the pipes under the bike for maybe a second, that shit turns out to be red fucking hot. Glad for atgatt.

All this said, about 6 or 7 cars stopped to ask if I need help, 2 strongmen helped pull the bike out the ditch and one woman stayed pretty much start to finish. Buddy who drove a car behind me in expectation of similar fuckups told me once we got home, that she was obviously flirting and I could have made a safe move. I told him I was focused on life and death at that moment, and this is accurate, however everyone knows autism was also at work here.

I'd say the DRZ is the best deal.

The KLR is a complete dog and painfully boring outside of cruising/road trips with occasionally offroad.

The XR650L is a torque monster that is comfortable but too heavy to get too crazy with offroad. Still fun bikes though with lots of aftermarket. My personal experience with them though is they need more frequent rebuilds than other 4T enduros. Primarily they like to eat rings every 7-10k.

The DRZ400 is going to be a great jack of all trades. The main thing you'll lose is the low end torque of the XR. The KLR is such a pooch it I'd daresay the DRZ has it beat on power/weight. DRZ is still heavy but light enough to get wild with if you really want to and I have no issue doing 3+ hour trips at 70-80mph with any of mine.

Couple that with how close it is, the DRZ sounds like the deal for you.
Another thing is the DRZ is a lot more modern of a bike than the XR for example - aka watercooled, nice cluster, etc. + price seems right for condition

despite being slow, inexperienced, out of shape, and scared of the new course's layout, i'm considering racing in a hare scramble at my local ORV park at the end of the month. i gotta get new tires though, its nothing but rocks and i have intermediates that have no grip. i know several dbt people ride in the canyonlands or other hard terrain. does anyone have experience with Dunlop MX52? i've read all the reviews, but i'm not sure if they're going to be the *best* choice for hard pack, rocks, roots, and some slippery spots. i was hoping to ask some of the local fast guys but havent seen any at either park i rode this weekend.

Feel free to post if you ever have questions. Especially around DRZ's. I've had a lot of bikes but I've had 5 or something DRZ's now and have done a lot of work with them. Right now I'm working on getting a new motor into mine, pic related.

I might not post in here much but I usually skim dbt a few times a day now that I have an office job and I'm in front of a computer all day and summer is our slow time so I have nothing to do most of the days.

Question for you oldbikefags. I am sort of minimalist when it comes to lifestyle. At least in my opinion, self reflection is always biased. It seams easier to have one or two bikes and keep them very well maintained as well as being able to get custom parts for whatever gets you off. You ever get tired of having dozens of bikes? Do you buy and sell alot? Why not have one bike you ride right into the ground and then replace it with a new one? Buying used/secondhand is an art in itself. I bought my first baiku new and intend to buy my second one new after this one is rode till death.

Whats the longest you've had a bike and the most miles/hours you put on before having to replace? Or do you sell long before then?
>>

Anon who said tank was nasty was on point.

Even with two filters too much shit is getting through, that small bit of whatever that crap is on the float needle seat was what caused all the mayhem today. There's this fine sand-like material all over the tubing too.

Welp, doing something about that tank it is then.

Float was fine.

its best to remove the front drumbrake alltogether. Harley Davidson owners frequently do this: they learn to brake with the rear, and the front cant fail because its no longer there. Less chance of losing front, no accidental stoppies, less weight, better rear control. Win win really

depends on the bike. either a new wheel with a hub that accepts a disc already on it with a custom caliper mount.
or maybe possible to drill and tap the existing hub to fit a disc.

but drum brakes aren't unsafe. they work fine when rebuilt.

guys i changed my front tire today for the first time. I rode ~5k miles after i got my salvaged ninja 250 and never changed the tire.

Now, after putting on the new tire, if i'm not going completely straight, say if i start turning left even slightly, i can feel a force coming from the tire kind of pulling me in that direction. I've never felt this before, after messing with it for a little bit i think i've come to the realization that this is GRIP. I dunno but it feels really good and was wondering if this was an accurate assessment?

Secured myself a plate.
Apparently they make em in the town I live, so I got to just ride by their shop and pick it up.
>>
>>15265030
Seems like they don't make tyres in my size. 160/60-ZR17 and 120/70-ZR17

Ur talking to someone who did exactly that
>>
I found the cause of the annoying metallic rattling sound. I tightened my header bolts a half turn each and I found a hose clamp looking thing on my exhaust pipe that wasn't clsmped€(the bolt fell out of it)
I'm going to just pull it for now, then this weekend I'll put it back together. Tomorrow I'll find out if that was it.
>>
>>15265117
that's a big tire.
is it for a heavier bike? i'd go for something harder like bridgestone in a heavy bike
>>
>>15265045
I hate gear but I don't know if I'm that guy
>>
>>15265117
i also don't think they make any z rated motorcycle tires, they're for the street
>>
>>15265185

Ninja 650. I'm trying to learn proper body positioning during cornering. I might head to track once I get new set of tires.
>>
>>15265233
No problem
>Tfw can't find any locktite and just make up for it by over-torquing everything
I've stripped at least 7 screws and bolts on this bike in the past year
>>
>>15265263
why does / dbt/ hate cruisers so much
>>
>>15265282
you really wanna know?
>>
>>15265282
Because they're shit
>Slow
>Heavy
>No ground clearance
>Barely lean
>Shit stopping
The only redeaming quality of a cruiser is the v twins sound good.

yes
>>15265295

is that the best you can come up with?
>>
>>15265297
after starting a good friend on one, i'd skip them. the components are all shitty quality, from the levers to the hardware to the spacers on the axles. the motor wheezes, the handling sucks, the suspension and brakes feel remote.
>>
>>15265302
because they are stripped of everything fun that makes you choose a bike over a car. they go out of their way to make every specification way worse than a standard, let alone a sportbike of any sort. less power, more weight, less ground clearance, slower and more vague handling, pathetic maximum lean angle, puts you in a helpless position from which you cant assert control. the brakes, clutch, and carbs are all super low performance. you cant wheelie them, jump a curb, go around a corner at any fun speed, slice through parking lots, load up the front tire and brake hard, get your weight forward to accelerate hard, or change direction quickly. you might as well be on a merry go round. and for all that, they want you to pay more money
>>
>>15265302
They're awful to ride anywhere else than straights lines. They make cool noise and their marketing teams are very succesful though.
>>
Am I wrong in thinking my 250 ninja is borderline dangerous with how slow the acceleration is? Or am I just being a pussy with it? I don't feel comfortable pulling out in front of cars on a 45mph road because it literally takes me a minute to get up to that speed unless my bike is warmed up

My R6. I need new sprockets and chain, what would you guys suggest for a set?

I want a bit more torque out of the bike, would a certain set help?
