Are you near a local racetrack?

Where there are racetracks there are schools. You can rent bikes and leather from them. I'd recommend scraping up the cash and doing it. You might find out the track ain't for you... 2 of my friends followed me on to the track and decided it wasn't their bag, so the last thing you want is an investment in a "trackbike" and leathers.

Penguin does shit at NJMSP and other tracks. I've done a few schools with them and they are the school that got me licensed thru CCS years ago. They rent out aircooled ducs that are bombproof and generally horrible but fun.

pic is me a few years ago getting my track legs back..

/dbt/ can you give me some ideas for a bike? I read the noob info and it doesn't really apply to what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a light powerful dual sport mostly for trail riding and occasionally going to town on. The favorite bike I've owned is my 99 cr125 and that's the kind of ride I'm looking for. The firmer the ride the better, and age isn't much of an issue. From what I've found the wr250r sounds close to what I'm looking for, I'm just worried it's underpowered being only a 250 and more geared for the street than trails.

I have a lot of experience riding so I'll be comfortable on almost anything.

Pic pretty related
>>
>>15122737
wr250 is fine. If you're tryna fly over table tops with your dual sport more power to ya but for trail riding the wr250r will be perfect. Light is better in my opinion, 450s on the trail, dual sport or not always felt so bound up because they were so overpowered for such delicate work.
>>
>>15122772
Is there much of an aftermarket for the 250s? I'm planning on taking one for a teat drive but I'm guessing I'm going to want a little more power. I forgot to mention that I don't want to spend a lot of money on a bike. Around a couple grand, not expecting to get a new bike
>>
>>15122620
I'm in the twin cities so there's definitely gotta be a track somewhere
Thanks m80

Can someone tell me if this is a decent buy? Gonna get it as my first bike

http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/mcy/5594918605.html
>>
>>15122737
The WR250R is a bet heavy and underpowered if you're used to dedicated dirt bikes. And the other japanese dual sports are even heavier. You might want to look at KTM or Beta as they offer bikes that fall more into the category of "street legal dirt bike" than a dual sport. They will be lighter and faster, but won't last as long. Depending on where you live, you might also be able to convert a dirt bike and get it registered for street.
>>
>>15122845
the price seems a bit steep for a 250
>>
>>15122845
Looks like a decent buy. I'd get a 650 twin or something as a first bike though. If you're any kind of decent rider the 250 will most likely bore you after 1000 miles or so.

I'd offer $1750-$2000 for it though.
>>
>>15122879
Aren't ktms a little more pricey? I've never heard of beta before I'll look into them. A street legal dirt bike is definately more up my alley. I've looked into converting a dirt bike and it just doesn't seem to be worth the effort and chance of not being able to register it. I live in Minnesota btw
>>
>>15122834
I guess, I don't know personally about aftermarket but every bike has levers mirrors and dumb shit. If you're looking for performance or crazy stuff I don't know.

>>15122931
I guess I am lost! I love my light agile 2 stroke dirt bikes. I guess I'm looking for something fast and still manageable on the trails. Right now I think I'm open to anything if you have any other suggestions!
>>
>>15122834
There's quite a bit you can do for the WRR to bump up the power a bit and add luggage, but you can't really shed any significant amount of weight.

>>15122919
KTMs are expensive if you buy new, but on my local craigslist I found that old used KTM trail bikes tend to be no more expensive or even cheaper than a comparable Yamaha/Suzuki/Kawasaki/Honda.

You might want to look up your local laws and check on some forums to see if people have any success plating dirt bikes in your state. The dual sports made for daily practicality won't generally be competitive with actual dirt bikes so plating an off road bike will probably be your answer. The street legal KTMs are bred from their enduro models so it would be basically the same result.

If you are on a budget though you might want to skip the street legality and just use a truck to take them places. The ones already street legal tend to be expensive, and conversions will cost a few hundred dollars at least.

>This
The price of that bike reflects an idea that people give a certain endearment to things they own, thus increasing their perceived worth.

For example, if you give group A bananas and group B random other shit, group A will value the bananas higher than group B will, group A will even be willing to buy more bananas at a higher price than group B will.

This is obvious in that "people think their shit is worth more than others want to pay" but the seed of material endearment runs very deep upon further research.

>>15122977
haha, its ok anon. Just remember that people enjoy offroad trail and even track riding on much bigger heavier bikes. Especially considering the size of the R1200GS for example. The bike is as nimble as you make it anon.

Any idea what might be wrong with it? I've got only limited mechanical experience, but I mean for $200 I'd be willing to chance something I could just swap parts to fix. I've been trying to find something to just get some basic practice on controlling/shifting/etc before I take a MSF course.

Do you guys ever get scared shitless by the thought of an accident/crash?

I was browsing this thread below and honestly a lot of it looks to be preventable/the fault of the motorcycle driver, but still, it's scary shit.

/handsignal/ reporting in. Shit is kind of annoying and I don't think people even understand that I'm signaling or why I'm sticking my arm up in the air.
>>
>>15123569
Fuck that, I like the open road and commuting. If I wanted to fantasize about who I wanted to be like (I do fantasize) I would want to be like the girl with the dragon tattoo. Just rides her bike everywhere/doesn't own a car because no fucks.

>>15123592
My logic was: normal work boots prevent abrasion, sneakers do nothing, so if I was going to get a dedicated boot might as well go full power ranger because the next step down does nothing for ankle distortion protection. So if the dedicated riding shoe/boot didn't protect my ankle from breaking might as well wear comfortable black work boots
>>
>>15123618
Oh yeah I get that for sure. I had an old CRF250R and the valves went out of shim if I sneezed around it.

As for signaling I guess you just do it for legal purposes? if you're not doing anything that a car needs to be for warned of then fuck it?
>>
>>15123580
Well, if you want to make in at a national level, you can start at pretty much any age, if you have the time and money.

If you're really talented, have lots of sponsorship, and the drive, you could even make it into SBK in your late 20s. National championships such as the AMA/MotoAmerica/BSB etc are pretty good springboards into it. (Although European Superstock is really about as far as you'd get without being exceedingly talented or lucky.)

If we're talking Moto2/GP, you've realistically got no chance unless you:

a) started racing at the age of 6-10, are a natural talent, and have a SHITLOAD of financial backing
b) somehow end up dominating a national championship (class mostly irrelevant), enter and win international championship races, and STILL have a shitload of financial backing.

That said, you can have the best fun of your life, just at a reputable amateur level. A well-run race club/championship should offer anything you could ever want. Personally, I race with Thundersport GB over here in the UK, and there are tonnes of folks with full, dealership-backed teams behind them. Hell, several of the current BSB riders have or still do, race with us. I always get jealous, seeing people with full factory-spec race trucks rolling into the paddock.

Oh yeah I hear CRFs eat their valves real quick.

I signal when turning off highways so other drivers know what I'm doing, same as with signalling in any other vehicle. It really irks me when people slow down to turn off a highway without even flicking the switch to turn on their signal, so I don't do it myself.

I mean they employ less people than programming and medical but if thats how you perceive it.

I was trying to get a picture with the statue, wasn't worried about parking in a parking lot with almost no cars.
But here's an ant pic.

But not all places are like yours. The maximum you could make is, maybe, is 14 an hour for full time with no college here. Of course I live in KY and we're shit out of luck when it comes to any real employment that isn't a McDonald's. We have an unemployment rate of like 5.3 or something.

There's all kind of industrial/construction and other labor jobs here that can start at more than $14/hour.

Yeah I'm doing school since I have it for free but without that benefit I might just go straight to the industrial work around my home town. Laborers start at 22/hr.

Yeah Engineering/Physics really does sound cool but I love the intense scrutiny and precision of software. Its creative but precise. There is a wrong way and a few right ways to do things. In contrast to an English paper. I hate English and grammar. The rules they teach us only seam to apply to words that are already written, to use the rules to write something makes anything you write terrible to read. Code is so very explicit.

Kek. I wouldn't say they are law abiding model citizens but they are welcoming kind dudes. They don't fuck with people for no reason like I've seen plenty of other groups of bikers do. They mind there own business and go for a hoon but if you do something malicious they will fuck you up. I've even seen people accidentally pull out in front of them and they'll let it go if you're apologetic. I also like how they understand its every man for himself if the cops show up. No waiting or staying around if your friend gets caught. A different group of guys got mad at me when one of the guys brother couldn't kick his bike in time and he got arrested. As soon as I seen the cops I just rode away. Later I got a nasty text saying that I'm a real scumbag blah blah. Fuck that. Everyone should know the risk.

Yeah we're lucky to have a really diverse economy with lots of opportunity, although I had to put in a couple years before I got to where I am now
>>
>>15124128
ha. I read somewhere that professors unknowingly grade students whom they see traits of themselves in higher than those who they have nothing in common. I hope if I can gauge my professors a bit I can engineer my writing a bit to tailor it to their liking.

And don't think of papers so negatively. Remember that whatever crazy pretentious douche shit you write and turn in is guaranteed to have at least one human read it. kek, hes a victim to your wandering mind.

Honestly I hated writing code for my teacher, because he was so bent on how he wanted it formatted, I format like this:

myclass
{
your code
}

Professor wanted:

myClass {
some code
}

It's because of his scrutiny I didn't make it a priority to study a lot of CS. Plus I'm doing engineering so it's not a complete necessity. If I was doing hardcore theoretical/particle/condensed/high energy physics then I might need it. But application is more of my thing. I might start learning some experimental physics later while in grad school if I get in, but who knows at this point.

I sure hope this is okay talk for this board, as long as I post bikes?

That's not really anything of merit. Any sane person would just go on their way without any threats at all.

What kind of riding or gangsta gangsta shit are you doing to get arrested anyway? Just wheelies and shit? Do you never go outside the city to rural areas to get your hoon on instead?

that's just imposter syndrome. Google it. It's actually a sign that you don't suck.

Posting bikes makes anything OK. And mods never come here anyway they're busy with the /b/tards kiddy porn.

And the formatting is a necessary evil my friend haha. Without it writing/reading/debugging code would require coders to learn different "dialects" every time they get into a new project. But hell I don't have to explain this to you haha. Its just that it wasn't your cup of tea.

"The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt."
-Bertrand Russell

The most intelligent people are so full of doubt lost in a world of variables and possibilities.
