That's pretty standard for bikes from that era. With the shocks mounted right next to the axle you don't have much weight at all going on the swingarm so it doesn't need to be built up much. It just guides the wheel as the suspension travels instead of standing all the weight of the bike.

As for your question the 1200 custom is pretty nimble, decent bike, I wish it had a smaller tire on the front. Makes decent power too. I don't own one. The 72 also handles pretty well, and is comfy as fuck. Unfortunately I always scrape the peg feelers because american bikes can't turn.
The biggest deal with harleys is how unreliable they actually feel, I swear to god. Piston slap for the first few seconds when you start them. Brand new bikes blowing blue smoke when give them gas. It's fucking sad really.
