This. I'm a 170lb weak-ass whiteboy and I can handle my DR650 pretty well. Once, I did have to have CC help me right it when I dropped it down on a hillside. I was already madder than a swatted-at hornet and a little worn out from all the mud and mad nonsense we ran into on that road, though.

Anyone remember when B21A1 (or however his handle was spelled) departs for BMT? I want to find out if he knows any good riding out here near DSM.

Layer up m8. I had a particularly shitty experience in New Mexico where I got a little lost then tried to take an unfamiliar road that I knew connected to the road I wanted to but had never ridden. It got to about 38F, I didn't have cool-weather gloves, didn't have my Cortech comfyjacket yet, and had to ride through a riverlakething some asshole rancher put in the middle of the county road. That rather much sucked. Also road back from CC's place one evening in rain and fog (in New Mexico of all places) at about 45F. I had a good waterproof overjacket, but my hands got fucking soaked all the way back home.

Even the guy's just doing some weekend riding, there's going to be a heck of a lot of maintenance compared to a naked or other road bike like he also suggested. The 450EXC and the 300EXC are race bikes and have race bike maintenance schedules. I'm pretty sure anyone here would rather be on the road than stuck in a garage having to do an oil change. He'd be better off getting a WR or a DRZ/DR650 if he's not going to be doing much dirt riding. Also daily reminder that 17" wheels are rice for dirt bikes.

Nigga please.

As someone who occasionally rides a dirt bike with knobblies on the road, the peace of mind a set of 17s bring is really nice.

I mean sure, if you wanna go fast on the twisties, buy a sport bike. BUT, if you wanna go fast on the dirt, AND the twisties, an extra set of rims is not much of an investment, and it really fucking helps when some fuckwit pulls out on you and you need to stop quickly.

There's such a thing as full size road tires. Buying an extra set of rims not required. I actually don't mind 17" tires but people have this conception you need them for the street, when you can just use standard ones instead.

There is such a thing as road tires for a 21" front, yes. But like fuck am I gonna change 2 tires just to hoon on the road, and then change them back to knobbies for off road. Far easier and faster to just change the whole wheel.

>people have this conception you need them for the street

People are retarded. You don't even need road tires for the street. For all legal purposes, knobbies do just fine, as long as they are DOT approved.

But don't try to pretend for one second that 17" rims with sticky tires on them aren't a fucking huge improvement, and shitloads of fun to boot.

Depends on the application. If you want any meaningful longevity out of a sports tyre, you can't do much better than Michelin Pilot Roads.
Any of the big brands such as Metzeller, Dunlop, Bridgestone or Pirelli are a solid bet.

>>
>>14907424
Ah bullshit. The last set of PR3s I had were fantastic, as were the two sets of PR2s before that. Their only shortcoming is (like all sports touring tyres) are a less aggressive rounder profile, and a compound that gets hotter and slippery quicker (that's at a track, riding at 10/10ths).
In regards to the failure, I can guarantee there's another factor at play here.
>>
>>14907438
if you are hooning may as well get the pilot power 3's, not like you will be leaning over far enough in the wet for the slicks on the edges to make a difference anyway.
Not like they cost more or anything.
>>
>>14907432
>and keep the old one as a memento

The thing is that it was gifted to me by my aunt because she knew I needed one,
not using it is what doesn't sit right with me.
I think best course of action would be to gift it back to his son if he gets a bike (he's my age).
But he doesn't seem to have any interest in it.
>>
>>14907442
Well the PR4's last for ages and work crazy well in the wet.
They're similar tires.

I never mentioned bad tyres at all. Just more suited tyres. I use the whole surface area on my PR3s too, doesn't mean I should be on Racetecs.
Rolling around using the whole tread isn't an indication on how much pace you're carrying.

G'day cunts, looking at getting my Ls pretty soon.

I'm a car mechanic, so I'm not clueless when it comes to general auto technology, but I'd like to know if older bikes - or retro-style bikes - are particularly difficult to maintain or ride?

I really want to get a bike with classic looks: plastic fairings and alloy wheels just don't do it for me. Would something like an old Honda CB250 be worth looking at?

What about Royal Enfields? They look pretty damn good and are in modern production, and I've found a few used Bullet 500s for a decent price.

Royal Enfields are utter garbage.

They're crappy old bikes made in a sweatshop in India out of shit materials and assembled about as well as you'd imagine.

Old Honda CB250's are fine, they're slow as shit but will probably never break down or leave you stranded.

Plus they're cheap as shit, unlike the Enfields.

The thing is you can get road tires for the stock rims which will be sufficient for 99% of people. The wheel swaps are really only an advantage when getting fully hektik. People swap them on because they think it looks cool or they want to be like the racers, and thus it is a race inspired cosmetic enhancement.

I did forget to mention though that your resale value will plummet with mileage regardless of maintenance, no one wants a bike that has had plenty of opportunities to miss maintenance regardless of how well you kept it.

IF I see a bike with 40k miles it means to me "This guy has had 40k miles worth of maintenance to forget about" as opposed to "This guy has had only 12k miles worth of maintenance to forget about"

Even if I was buying a mechanic's bike.

I've made it about 120km so far with only one time hortons warm up stop. I've found quite a few fun twisty roads that I'm looking forward to riding again when I have more skill and it's warmer out. I should hit toronto in about 30 more km and then I'm probably going to ride lakeshore all the way home. Hopefully it warms up a bit more before then.

Parts will fail, metal does wear out however keeping your oil fresh and keeping your chain at the right tension will make your life a lot easier, valve adjustment every 10k miles or so and your cams will last forever.

The important think about motorcycles is that replacing parts is way WAY less expensive and difficult than with cars, you can do most of it yourself (I wouldn't even hesitate to say you could do ALL of it yourself if you were willing to get wrist deep in complex assemblies and take your time.) The tools you need aren't even all that complex.

A good metric wrench set
Breaker bar
Feeler gauges
Torque wrench and socket set
Motorcycle stand
A buddy to help move the engine if it needs moving

and you're pretty much set

circuit tester too I guess. Motorcycle maintenance is beautiful simply because it is something you can teach yourself and learn from your clymer's manual and the internet.
