I'm not a Honda genius but I think the B20 would be easier and is likely more documented online. Either one is gonna be moderately difficult.
>>
>>14664723
Depends on a multitude of factors, like do you want to retrain 4wd, how much money you want to spend etc.

I can tell you there's no clear cut answer.

If you are looking to boost an engine, tho, bigger displacement is usually always better for making power, as you more displacement is more exhaust, more exhaust means a bigger turbo, a bigger turbo is more power.

Simplicity sake, I'd probably go with a NA B20.

I've had an 05 civic ex special edition coupe for two years now.

One engine rebuild(blew head gasket, needed new head) , a worn out wheel bearing, and rotted ball joints all around.

This car is fucking me on repairs, and I maintained it pretty well.

Currently at 130,000 miles.

Should I cut my losses and dump it before something else breaks?

Needing a new head after a blown head gasket usually means you were running some distance with a blown head gasket. A blown head gasket usually results from over heating. How did you know you blew a head gasket and needed a new head?
>wheel bearing
>ball joints
Those are maintenance items. Avoiding pot holes and slowing down on train tracks will prolong their lifespans. If it's automatic, I'd automatically get rid of it if you don't do the trans fluid change every 30k miles.

I have a 1992 Prelude S with the f22a1 engine. It's a great car, and I've been doing small upgrades and repairs ever since I got it (new clutch, a/c compressor, new paint, minor interior repairs, etc. It's now in very good shape comfort/looks wise, and I was wondering what my options are performance wise. Mostly I'm looking to squeeze a bit more power out of the engine, seeing as it's a non-vtec model and only makes ~130hp.

After snooping around on some forums it seemed like I could either upgrade by swapping out parts from later engines like the f22a4 and the h22, or I could run a turbo.

Could a f22a1 go to ~200-250hp on stock internals? It seems like a solid engine, but I haven't been able to find a lot of info online. Most people are using the h22 or are pushing for 400+hp monster set ups, while I just want my DD to be able to 0-60 in less than 10 seconds.

CB7 forums will help a lot. The F22A1 has iron cylinders, so it'll take boost like a bitch. A 4G63T turbo manifold + turbo will bolt right onto that, so those are cheaper than shit and easy to find through EbayDM or just about anything else.

Yeah but the price is usually pretty high. Look up Majestic Honda and there's a full list of every single part in your Honda and the part number to take to a dealer. Or you can order directly from Majestic. I usually just get the part number and find it on eBay.

>>
>>14665093
Welp, you've hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

I didn't even know that I should have been preemptively changing ball joints/bushings/bearings/etc. I suppose I should consider replacing the clutch soon. The gearbox(or anything else in the tranny) should be fine, right?

Yeah, it overheated on a 2 hour drive, I was pushing it pretty hard and didn't notice the temp. It was running fine, but apparently the radiator or coolant pump shit the bed.

Do you know of anything else I should replace?

I'm at the point where it's either sink $4000 into it and repair everything and maybe a few upgrades and a paint job
>or
Just say fuck it and get a new car. Problem is, I want something similar, but I can't stand the new Civic coupes.

The 2005 EX is somewhere between a Miata and a Mustang, and I appreciate that. Not sure what else I'd go with.
>>
>>14666254

I've had a similar experience.
My car overheated a couple hours away from home, I noticed it just in time before it go all the way to the top (temp gauge) because I smelt coolant. I drove like that for 10 miles (hit 55mph, kill the car, rolling start at 10mph while heater on full blast). I got it towed after I found a house to borrow a phone. I was in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and had no signal. The radiator shit the bed in my scenario.
The coolant pump going bad in Hondas are unheard of. A stuck thermostat can also cause an overheating problem. Check your coolant reservoir and see if there's some left. If not add to full line and check it every time you drive for about a weak. If it's gone down within a week you have a leak somewhere. You can look for the leak. If you can't find it try replacing the hoses. If it still leaks, replace the radiator last since it's the most expensive part.
>I should consider replacing the clutch soon. The gearbox(or anything else in the tranny) should be fine, right?
As for the clutch you can check it by going WOT (wide open throttle) and see if the clutch slips. If your gear pops to neutral or grinds gears when shifting constantly and normally, you probably need new synchros. A good way to maintain the trans is replacing the trans fluid every 30k miles with genuine Honda manual trans fluid. (I'm long overdue on mine tbqh, too lazy to make an apparatus to fill it).
>other things to replace
Expect the alternator to shit the bed before 200k miles. Just keep an eye on your electrical stuff. Dancing needles on your gauges can be a symptom of an alt going bad. Mine shit the bed too. Second time my car needed to be towed.
>bottom line
It's a nice car stick with it. It will be more expensive in the long run if you keep buying new cars (monthly payments).

Thanks for the advice.

As for the overheating, I've already had the radiator, hoses, pump, etc replaced, as well as a full rebuild with a new head + head gasket due to the damage.

I think I'll keep the car for now, but I suspect I'll have to replace the clutch soon.

Another bonus is that the stock speakers are actually quite good. I might consider adding a small sub soon once I get everything mechanically sound.

Side note:
Have you ever thrown a P2646 code? It says my VTEC pressure switch is stuck in the 'ON' position, and currently I'm rev-limited to 4k RPMs with no VTEC.

No shop I've talked to knows a sure way to fix it, but I suspect it wasn't wired correctly when I had the engine rebuild redone.

P.S.:
Has anyone ever dipped their car? I'm considering it as I doubt I'll keep the car for more than 2 more years or so, and a full paint job is tits on ass expensive.

And you don't really need it I guess. If you need to get it fixed for emissions testing take it to a Honda dealer. They're going to rape your booty hole when it comes to labor but they'll fix it.

Dipping the car properly can last over 3 years. A friend of mine has a golf he dipped in 2013 and it's still in good condition; not pealing anywhere.

Your market is as boring and generic as fuck. No wonder with people like you why almost every majeur automotive innovations come from europe.
Monospace ? Renault
Ludospace ? PSA
Hatchback ? Renault
Small city cars ? Europe
Find me an USA car as innovative as The Twingo or the C4 Cactus was for example.
Your market recycle in more plastic, more big and more shittier your muscle car from the past or create bigger truck to allow your fatass mommies to go to wallmart.
The vast majority of your cars are oversized, inefficient and don't even procure any driving pleasure.

I did however score on an 08 LX that still handles like a brand new car for all intents and purposes. Interior looks fresh, hell it hardly looks or feels like it has 120k miles on it, and I stole that car for $7000 out the door.

I'll just shoot harder for an SI next time. I'm still happy to be a part of the Honda senpai.

My tires are already wearing despite 900 miles from me and 24 hours of Lemons. RIP alignment, I just don't want to shell 70 bucks for it.

I'm thinking I might need to pick up a front camber kit. They cost twice as much as rears though. ;_;
>>
>>14674999
Why a front camber kit? The tire wear?

Check out all your balljoints for one. If the coilovers you have are lower, then you'll need a kit to correct it. For handling purposes, your better bet with FWD is camber in the rear anyway, front needs to be corrected.

OK so pressing the throttle in just a tiny bit when I crank it will stop it from shutting off. I let go of it and it's staying on. I guess the IACV is supposed to give it enough air to keep it started for that second I let go of the key? That's when it kept shutting off unless I give it gas.

I think I found a thread on civicwagon that said there's not much differences between the gears of the FWD D trans and the RT4WD, also apparently to give the front an LSD you need to use a Phantom Grip(RT has 12 bolts in the diff and the OBX only has 10), but apparently an OBX front LSD works on the rear diff so long as the bolt holes are machined on the OBX

Guess I'm parking the civic for a while until I figure out why it won't start... I checked all the connections and fuses and everything seemed fine, maybe something in the steering wheel lock broke. Or maybe it's the switch. All I know is the only thing happening when I turn the key is a click that sounds like a relay somewhere by the battery.
>>
>>14683475
What's it doing again? Not cranking at all? I'd take the starter over to AutoZone. They test it for free. I took the Corolla one to them before I reinstalled it to make sure it was good before climbing back under that mess.
>>
>>14683589
Its a brand new starter and the lights aren't dimming at all when I hit the key.
>>
>>14683622
I would check anyway. I know the brand new one in my Jetta shit the bed 31 days after I bought it.

Check the main relay too. Do you hear the fuel pump priming?
>>
>>14683807
Yeah everything goes on normally, the auxiliary circuit is cut off as normal, and there is a click like a relay but absolutely nothing else happens. I got home obviously by roll-starting it and everything seemed to function normally on the way home. There was a little bit of a shudder around 2800 rpm where vtec engages but there kinda always has been, I probably just noticed it more today since I was looking for issues.
>>
>>14683920

It's a third lobe on the cams per set of intake and exhaust cam lobes per cylinder that has a higher amount of lift for one of the respective valves and is engaged at the legendary "vtech kicked in yo" point. It has a small supercharging effect because of how it effects the swirl of the intake charge. It's a lot more like being able to have two sets of cams installed one economy oriented set at low rpm and a higher performance set at higher rpm.

first for rip Lumpkin
homie from Ft. worth drove a sick CRX and died today.

The first firefighters on the scene reported the driver, identified as Jason Lumpkin from Fort Worth, Texas, was not breathing. Emergency medical technicians later transported the victim to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.

"Spectator Bryan Hodges told KSN News he noticed the car when it was reaching the half-mile mark on the track. He said when it passed that mark, the car began to swerve left to right. When it got past the finish line, Hodges said it lost control, went left and hit the guard rail.

Hodges said after the car hit the guard rail, traveling between 140 and 50 miles per hour, and went airborne about 15 feet above the ground"

>>14684452
Damn what's going on with it? I'd hit up lots of junkyards.
>>
>>14684557
i mean, it was a combination of all the wrong things happening at once.
he's a personal friend and he kind of skimped out on his roll cage job, i didn't know he didn't have his seat so secure (it moved while he was rolling and he crushed his neck), there was no first response on-site at the track, and the track itself isn't in the best condition.

Real eye opener as to why you need that shit, you know?

I'm doing a valve adjustment.
Is it more accurate to turn the engine over by using the crank pulley? And then using the little marks and arrow to find tdc? Orrrr by just turning the power steering until the lobe is on the base circle?

I'm super paranoid about everything lol I've never done a valve adjustment. Ericthecarguy uses the power steering, but I swear I read somewhere (of course now I can't find it) that using the power steering and looking for the lobes to be at base circle can cause you to be off by like 10 degrees if you aren't perfectly on base circle...?

16 coupes arent bad spec wise but they are basically accords coupes in body.
Honest ask yourself how much you can replace without a mechanic and see if or what insurance is willing to cover.
My 2001 em2 has insurance paying for 850$ worth of repairs/replacements acbelt, windshield, and struts.

What kind of insurance allows you to have break-fix on an old car?

Nothing I know of allows that.

I didn't get into an accident, so collision doesn't cover it.

Hmmm OK(: if you are curious about rotating the power steering, you could check out the Ericthecarguy video on valve adjustments(:

Thanks for you input!

Dont bother with paint if its two more years anon. Im in a similar situation to you. Since my ex em2 was a hand me down my parents want to help me get a newer car in 2 years. I was going to go used in 3 years but they really want to help me get a new car for some reason. Fix internals first and foremost.
Also look into the solenoid.

Pretty sure I'm going to replace the whole VTEC solenoid, as the switch is like $80, the whole damn thing is around $120.

Going to schedule the repair soon.

So far, after resetting, CEL hasn't come back on, but I haven't revved over 4k I don't think.

What to do when car is 1200 kilometers away from you?

Thinking of buying http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=220496245#
because the price is really good. RHD does not matter much for weekend/track car or does it?

The problem is I can't throw away 2 tanks of diesel, road tolls and 2 days just to go check if everything is ok with the car.

Anyone near the seller also lurks here?
>>
>>14671525
Opposite of that but all are 3k and over 200k miles.
>>14691572
I thought they wouldn't
Some reason nationwide decided to cover it though so who knows.

My car is 300hp

Their 50-65 from my local dealer.
Also its easy enough to replace yourself if you know how to take out the air filter to make room to do so. Try rewiring it first though.

I have never owned one, driven parents Peugot, I'm immigrating soon, buying a car now would be a waste.
I do know what to look for, have helped my friend restore a 1st gen MR2 from rustheap, and I tend to watch (a lot) of youtube videos on the subject, I'll take pics and videos for you either way.

>EP3 Type-R

Doesn't that have the full blown iVTEC with control over intake and exhaust cams? It looks really clean if that's the one you're looking at, I wouldn't care if it was RHD or LHD if it was my weekend car, I would get it if I was you

It's great by the numbers on paper, but I bet it's completely disconnected from the driver in the same way the new NSX is, I like that Honda is now using factory turbos, I just didn't want it at the expense of a high redline

I really like old time stamped photos. It is fun to think about the car being new and actually worth something. They weren't sub $1500 shitboxes then. They still looked new and the owners actually took care of them. It's crazy to read posts on RPR that are 10+ years old and the torsion bar cars were already considered inferior to the EF's and EG's.
