This is the Trans Am Trail overlayed on our /dbt/ map. I'm planning on stopping and meeting you h/o/mos on my trip. So far I'm planning on meeting WranglerSport, Trolly and KKK. If you're going to be within an hour or so of the northern legs or the middle route and wanna meet up and ride let me know.

Okay, Mr. Professional Bike transporter. I'm about to buy my first bike, but it's 3 hours away. How do I strap it down in the bed of my truck so that nothing bad happens to it or the bed?
>>
>>14188760
safest alignment is front tire to the corner of the bed, straps to the bars as close to the triples you can and another strap or two on the back to help stabilize it
>>
>>14188760
Exactly like pictured, two ratchet straps up front, each going to it's own side, and one in the rear to keep it from bouncing. The GS450 I bought 7 hours away and the Harley was about 5, my friend has also driven from VA to OK like this in a truck bed. I have cleats in all 4 corners, but you can use the top holes or anything else, just make sure to compress the shit out of the front suspension so it doesn't move in the bed, that way it wont move left or right.
>>
>>14188760
Front tire in the center of the bed, straps around each handlebar (or something like in his pic), compress the forks most of the way. Rear doesn't really matter.
>>
>>14188760
The idea is to compress the forks with a ratchet on each side mainly, and if possible another two ratchets on the back swing-arms, or the tires spokes.
>>
>>14188225

But thanks much fellas, I realized this was a genuine concern when my buddy bought a bike and it fell over in his truck bed and got fucked up making a turn because he didn't strap it down properly.

So, while we're at it, I'm buying an 01 GS500 with 10k miles, recently cleaned carbs, new tires, and a new battery for $1500. How badly did I fuck up/How well did I do?

Hi guys,

I just got my learners license this week and I'm looking to buy my first LAM bike. I'll be using it to commute to work and simple errands with some time on the highway. I've looked around and I my heart set on the Kawasaki z300. Would you recommend it?

2be honest the ninja 650 is a parallel twin so not that super sport. You can check on cycle-ergo.com how you'd fit and how the seating position would actually be.

I have sat one in store and it felt a big big for me. I'm a girl and I'm only 5.7 and weigh 55 kilo. i could only touch the ground with my tippy toes and I can see myself having trouble holding it up. How would the Z300 go on the highway?
>>
>>14188879
Eh, I always do because my truck bed is bare painted metal (no bedliner) and its usually winter when I buy a new bike, which means the tires are cold as hell and there's some leftover snow in my bed.
>>
>>14188988
With your size it'd go well enough, if where you live is commonly windy, you'll get pushed around a bit, it's not really a bad thing if your on the highway for a short distance, but it gets really old really fast.

I'm 260lbs and ride a 250 from 2005, highway speeds are easy albeit loud and kinda annoying.

Looking to buy a supermoto within the next month.. I am pretty set on either a WR450, a YZ450, or a KX450, but may be willing to go with a DRZ400..
I will mainly be doing singletrack on the weekends with a couple buddies at Capital Forest (Live in Olympia, Washington), and occasionally (maybe once or twice a week) to work which is 30 miles of freeway..
Not sure if the miles/hours racked up, or the freeway miles would be too harsh for a YZ or KX? I would be gearing whichever bike I go with appropriately, getting all the lights etc, with a small battery(unless suggested otherwise).

TLDR:
>wr450, yz/kx 450 converted sumo (possibly drz)
>maybe 60-120 miles a week of freeway
>singletrack weekends
Is the yz/kx maintenance intervals really that bad?

Well the KX and YZ are pure race bikes, sp o guess that the intervals will be shorter. And they also won't be street legal since no lights and shit.
If you want a supermoto that is a pure race bike but still has lights you could look for a SXV 550

Yea, they wont have the lights etc, but whichever way I go, I need to buy the lights anyhow, just if I were to go WR (or maybe drz), I wont have to buy the head or taillights, which I planned to replace anyways since theyre kinda ugly
Just checked, and there doesnt seem to be any of the SXV's available in my area anyhow
>>
>>14189090
If you wanna build it go with the WR (dunno how much of a PITA plating is in WA, might not be worth it), if you wanna buy it, get a DRZ.

DRZ is pigfat compared to a traditional supermoto, but it's fully competent offroad unless you're doing really gnarly shit.

But you also would have to do the wiring and stuff to prepare the mx bikes for use with lights while the wr and drz will have the light already wired and (if not even having a street legal kit thing already installed) also the preparations for indicators and such.
>>
>>14189153
Also, if you like to tinker, go DRZ, the aftermarket is insane.

If you're planning on having two sets of wheels, supermoto and dirt, buying a DRZ400SM is going to be cheaper than buying an S/E and then wheels. Also the SM has much better suspension, at the cost of tamer cams.

For plating any bike (mx or anything) they require headlight, taillight, turn signals (front/rear) and DOT tires
The pigfat is the main reason I was worried, I wasnt sure how bad it was.. Didn't want it to be too much of a hindrance for riding with my buddies in the trails (one has a cr450, the other a 250). Also I do wanna be irresponsible and have the ability of power willie dillies, which ive read drz you pretty much HAVE to clutch willy.. truth?

>>14189162
The wiring I'm not too worried about, I found a pretty self contained way to go about it using a small battery, where I wont have to rap into the stator necessarily

>>14189174
I do like to tinker a good bit, the DRZ looked like a dream until people kept saying it was extra heavy in comparison to everything else available.. Whichever bike I go with I will have 2 sets of wheels regardless.. may look some more into the drz then

I can power wheelie in first on dirt with my knobbies or on pavement with my street wheels, with 15/39 heightened highway gearing and a big aftermarket tank up front. On the street, I can power wheelie in second with my current 15/44 gearing (still fine for highway, but it worried me on 800 mile highway road trip).

>people kept saying it was extra heavy in comparison to everything else available
Yeah it's heavy compared to dirt bikes, but that helps on the street and 320lbs wet is still not that heavy.

The DRZ is one of the best "do everything go everywhere" motorcycles you can own. If it had a 6th gear and EFI I'd say it was the best motorcycle period (on that note, pick up a KTM 690 if you can find one - that's the best motorcycle you can own).

What are the most roadable 250 dual sports?

I'm planning a trip down to South America this year, and I really would like to do it on a 250 since I have a travel-light philosophy and would like the option of doing trails.

I know the Kawa Super Sherpa is a good choice - smooth engine, low seat, 6-speed - but it's also really rare (having trouble finding one nearby). What other small dual sports lean more toward the on-road side of things, or can be made that way with minimal mods?

No, stock clutch still. I'm only at 11.5k miles. It is due for replacing here in a few thousand but I don't see a need to until it slips or otherwise loses function. I mainly bought the new kit because of the squeal my clutch sometimes made, only to learn that is completely normal with a dry clutch that is warm or slipped a lot within a short time.

I had the displeasure of breaking in a new clutch on my previous bike, and am not looking forward to doing so on a dry clutch system, however the torque will make slipping even more unnecessary than it currently is.
