>live in Jew york
>currently drive an 06' Ford Focus
>have new job that is 40mi round trip
>car has never traveled that far during a winter season

frankly, I dont know if the little car can make it. I know I definitely don't want to be stuck that far from home in a snowstorm (which happens plenty of times out here).

I just want a car that I know I can safely traverse snowdrift/ice covered roads if need be. Something more durable/reliable and with real offroad capability.

what does /k/ recommend?

I'm looking for

>2010 or newer
>no preference for new or pre-owned at the point.
>$24000 max (assuming decent financing)
>decent MPGs (greater than 18/23)
>true four wheel drive

I had looked at a 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk that a dealer was gonna sell me for $21,824 but the deal kinda fell through.

I'm thinking maybe a Nissan Xterra, Subaru Outback, or older Jeep Grand Cherokee?
>>

>>
>>13995988
Other than snow and ice do you *really* need to go bounding through offroad terrain? You can get by on trail/fire roads fine with something that is far more practical for your commute like a Subaru.
>>
Army surplus deuce and a half.
>>
>>13995988
My family lives in Utah, snow and long drives are par for the course here. My little sister has a subaru impreza and it's about perfect. the computer controlled AWD is amazingly sure footed even in ice and slush, it's decently fast, and mpg isn't terrible. Don't get a jeep unless you are a mechanic or plan on becoming one.

All the vehicles you have listed should be competent for mild offroading and snowy conditions, since they all have awd/4x4.

I drive an 01 wrangler and it's great off road and in the snow. Personally wouldn't suggest the Wrangler though, or anything Chrysler that has a coil-over suspension due to the "deathwobble" they seem to develop . I love my jeep but honestly I'd go test drive that Subaru lol

looks like the general consensus is Subaru.

I had been looking at the new XV Crosstrek but it was way to expensive for the current model.

Maybe an Outback, Forester, or Impreza 5dr?

/o/ also mentioned FJ Cruiser, 4runner or Xterra.
>>

>>
>>13995996
FJ Cruisers are crap and unless you want to put new axles and toughen it up it's just a glorified minivan except there is no room in the second row.

Crosstrek is pretty great for light stuff same with any Subaru

If you hate MPG older Grand Cherokee / Cherokee / FJ80 Land Cruiser

Happy Medium Xterra / new Cherokee / +2004 4runner/Tacoma / +1995 Wrangler

Or if you wanna be a bad ass just get a used Mercedes G-Wagon any year

I looked at the renegade because I think they're kind of neat looking and thought they would be affordable.
It's like nearly $30k for an all wheel drive one and not much less for a FWD version. Seriously, FWD only jeeps!?!

Ever since that Fiat faggot took over the line and started making those abomination cherokees and catering to soccer moms Jeeps have just become more and more over priced shit.

I wish Europe would just stay in Europe. In another year I'll be buying my 3rd brand new vehicle but I'll be damned if I buy a jeep until that clown is disassociated with the brand.

The CEO, Michael Manley is british and has a background with FIAT.
Jeep is a subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler headquartered in the UK.
Jeep Renegade is built on the Fiat 500 (fucking lol) and is built in Melfi Italy.

>Amerishit
Yeah, if a Fiat shilling britbong making a rebadged Fiat 500 in Italy counts as an American vehicle than sure I guess. The reality is that Jeep has gone completely to shit ever since you faggots took them over. They're not even Jeeps anymore.

>>

Jeep, and their parent companies dodge and Chrysler, have sucked badly for like 20-30 years now.

The ONLY thing keeping them going ( other than being bought by FIAT) was "muh heritage" motherfuckers pining for the ramchargers and hemi chargers of yesteryear. Oh, and cummins motors.

If ford or chevy was allowed to have cummins motors they would be hands down goat.

But for real though, modern jeeps are fucking cheap garbage designed to look flashy, for fucking morons who cant even google for the J&D reliability lists.

It was a question based on the information provided.

He drives a Ford Focus, and apparently doesn't trust FWD which is perfectly fine in ice and snow so now wants AWD/4WD. Mentions wanting "real offroad capability" and then says he was shopping a Jeep Renegade since it fit his needs.

It is obvious no real offroad capability is needed, or the Renegade would never have entered the equation. He needs a commuter car, and just happens to want AWD to go with it.

If someone needs a conceal carry handgun, you don't recommend them FNs new semi-auto M249, you recommend a handgun.

I have a 2000 ford Explorer Sport track, its like a Ford explorer, but it has a little 4 foot truck bed, and I love that thing to death. Sadly its reaching the 240k mile mark, and I've already had to replace the engine and transmission in it (which, I know, was retarded on my part) but its served me well. Truck bed is really nice to shoot from, its 4WD, and its good enough on gas that it can be used everyday. Also, if you get a 2010 model, you get that sync shit and bluetooth and all that fancy shit (I just use a cassette to AUX adapter). Pic related. Not mine, but general what they look like and how you can make them look.

Toyota>any 2000+ jeep

Older jeeps are the best after the tj jeep went to shit. Only vehicles I will buy are Toyota/Lexus and older jeeps. Once jeep came out with a 2wd model wrangler they lost my business. The renagade is complete shit hell the jks are complete shit. Fiat ruined an iconic American vehicle by making plastic ecobox crap.

I will take a new Toyota over a new jeep in a heart beat even a rav4. Not to mention how sexy those new land cruisers are.
>>
You don't need awd or 4x4 to drive on snowy roads. Any fwd car with good tires is perfectly fine for winter driving. Tires matter the most, a subaru with shitty ties will do worse in the snow than a focus with snow or good all season tires.

Crossovers are for soccer mom's and literal fags. Jeep grand cherokees are just shit. Subarus are for lesbians and tumblrites. Xterras are pretty decent but overkill for your purposes.

TJs were produced until model year 2006, so why do you think only TJs before 2000 were good when they were mechanically identical? Factory Jeeps have only gotten more capable in every iteration and the aftermarket has grown huge in the past two decades. On what are you basing your "shit" argument?

Meant tjs in general where the last good jeep model. Rubicon packages are a joke oversold as good off roaders. The price tag for them for what they actually do compared to a decently built jeep aren't worth it. The selling point of Rubicon is lockers and d44 axles that aren't even real d44s. They are just 30/35 axles frankensteined with 44 pumpkins. For the selling price of a Rubicon I could build a 4 link yj get lockers axles and tires and have left over cash. Not to mention the price tag on jk/us for something I am going to beat into the ground. And the whole argument of aftermarket parts is just making jeep seem like the Honda of the 4wd world.

Even if you have the money for it, why would anyone buy a car that needs to go to the gas station three times as often as a modern vehicle? I understand why its fuel economy is terrible but I have to imagine most people who could afford them in the first place could buy even better, dedicated off roaders like a Rally Fighter.

Not OP, but I've been liking these

What are potential problems with the IDI engines?

And what are warning signs to watch for when test driving before buying?

>Aren't new jeeps ranked super low in initial quality and reliability? Why is there such a demand for them still. Can people be this retarded?

In my town, Jeep dealerships are shoveling base model Patriots out the door for under $12,000 after rebates and discounts. And they have generous financing offers. Hard to beat the pricing. Honestly if you handed me 12 grand and told me I had to buy a new car with it, I'd probably end up buying a Patriot over the (even less reliable) econoshit available at that price point.

>I've driven it in ice and snow before. it... manages, but I'd feel more comfortable with a more modern and durable car.
I lived exactly where you live. I got by WITHOUT snow tires. You don't need 4WD.
>says who?
Me. You can't go off road in the tri-state unless you know people or hit Rausch Creek.

Just get dedicated snow tires, I've never got stuck in my Focus and I've got caught in a snowstorm driving up I70 from Aspen through the passes to Denver.
