Fellow 7age bro, tell me about your engine setup, I know nothing of mine.

Also, are you using a 7afe or 4age oil pump?
>>
>>13986938
Yes.
>>
>>13986965
>7afe or 4age oil pump
Not him. But they should be the same.
Correct me if I'm wrong
>>
>>13986972
Just go with a cheapo factory replacement.
I normally just put a nice tip on so it doesn't have that dumb cheesy pipe sticking out
>>
>>13986980

I have no idea.
>>
>>13986990
Lol i just took the exhaust tip off mine.
The thing is like a foot long and does from a 2 1/2" to 3" tip.
Id prefer the cheesy straight pipe
>>
>>13987002
The 7A block is the same but slightly taller to gain the .2L
Also the timing belt from a Porsche 924 is usually used because the 4age one is too short for the 7A block.
Point being. The oil pump should be the same
>>
>>13987006
If you go cheesy. At least have them cut an angle into it.
>>
>>13986965
I am using a later year 4age oil pump because they flow better than 7afe and earlier 4age pumps. The 4age oil pump outlet is lower than the inlet on the 7afe block though, so I did some porting modifications for optimal flow from the 4age pump. The 7afe pump should work fine without modification.

has anyone here DD their 86/old corolla with a 4age for over a year or so? Drove pic related with 300k miles as daily for 6 months and didn't have problems outside of a small oil leak. But just wondering if I just got somewhat lucky.

Currently have an r32 being imported and was wondering if selling my 01 miata and importing an 86 as a DD would be a dumb idea. Probably is, but with prices only going up i kinda feel pressured to jump on one.

Out of the cars you listed, if you want a DD, just get the '88 Corolla. The Celica is also a good option but consider that it will be
>slow as fuck
>smaller and less practical than the Corolla hatch

If you don't actually need the car right now you could get the S/C one and work on it for awhile. I don't recommend this if this will be the first car you've owned, since it does look beat (but not irreparably so).

tl;dr for DD Corolla > Celica > S/C, for project S/C is best (Corolla could also be good). If you're not sure then get the Corolla. It looks like a very good deal and in fairly clean condition

sorry for spelling errors, alcohol.

i want something that
A) wont fall apart on me
B) is a good frame for a project
i can take parents cars or public transport but

C) i have to convince parents the car is worth it, so externally, or mechanically it needs to be sound.

Id love to find a celica GT4/alltrac, or an AWD corolla wagon.

the S/C just doesnt strike me as being able to last long enough or pass parents (mechanically illiterate) visual inspection.

i dont have the mechanical skill myself to swap a celica from FWD to AWD, nor from auto to manual, so my first aim is manual and AWD or RWD.
>>
>>13987675

I own a GT-Four, desu you don't want one if you live at home with your parents and have limited funds. In Canada it's like $100 just for the differential fluids, lel.

The Celica GT-R would actually be better since if I am remembering correctly, it is a 3S-GE with 180~ hp. It would be a good car. If you get bored of it you can later on swap it for a GTE. I wouldn't worry too much about RWD or AWD unless you live somewhere with A) a lot of gravel roads (I do) or B) a lot of snow (I also do). If A or B, then any drive train option can be fun.

FWD can be fun if it's light enough, the Corolla will be good if it's manual. I would buy that. You don't have to but I'd strongly encourage it, it should be easy to maintain. When you have more money you can swap a 20V/6 spd.

I would avoid the AWD Corolla wagon if you want to go fast. The transaxle and axles are not very strong, and if you wanted to make them stronger it would take a lot of effort.

I had 2 FWD cars before a RWD and AWD. AWD is overrated most of the time, unless you can afford to beat the shit out of it and then fix it. If you can't convince your parents to get you the supercharged Corolla then their of the other two options are good.

If you really, really want RWD then look for a 1st gen RX-7 or an MR2. If you need AWD then consider a Mazda 323 in AWD format if they exist where you live.

I DD an AE82 Twin Cam 16 in Australia, sitting at 273,000km now. Have had the current one for about 14 months, and DD'd another Twin Cam 16, pretty much the exact same model for about 2 years prior to getting the second one.

Have had... some, issues, but I don't think it's as hard as a lot of people think it is. I do nearly all of my own maintenance, so the biggest thing I come across is that sometimes I've had to walk to and from work for a day or two because I've needed more time to replace bits and pieces. So get yourself a pushbike if you don't have one. At this sort of age I would recommend replacing bushings, wheel bearings, and ball joints if it hasn't been done recently. My first car actually got too unhealthy to keep on the road, rings were basically fucked at the end of its life and that's why I've got the second one now.

1st-3rd gen Supra
Any Cressida, Chaser, etc

All are good cars and can probably pass mom and dad's "is this shitbox reliable and shitboxy enough" test. The odds of getting an AWD shitbox that's actually fun in your price range are low (very, very low).

Also, post moar pics of your car, it looks nice.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I really don't want to put pressure on you, but you'll want to import one sooner rather than later. They're very expensive in Japan these days (more so than USDM models stateside), and the price jumps in the last two or three years have been pretty astronomical. I was lucky to get mine when I did... just a shame it's still sitting in a workshop in Sydney.

Oh yeah, don't expect to get a stock one with low km for less than $14,000 US.

I'm not sure. Possibly more demand in Japan these days, there aren't all that many left and a lot of people want them. Could be to do with the whole perception that the US GT-S isn't a "true" AE86 (which is just rubbish really, they're exactly the same car with different bumpers and AFM instead of MAP sensor) as well.

>>13987998
It's getting a little crazy, it's at the point where the price for a good AE86 is starting to creep into average R32 GT-R and FD RX-7 territory. And they're not going to drop any time soon either.

I didn't bother springing for a stock one, tried bidding but they all ended up going above my threshold. I ended up grabbing one with about 142,000km on it, not 100% stock but not modded to shit either. My intention when buying was to make it into a restoration project with an NA built 4A-G and upgraded suspension and brakes... I'd feel pretty bad for doing that to a bog stock AE86 with 50,000km on it, they should be in a damn museum these days.

Sort of. I bought a 185k '85 GTS in September 2014. Drove it to work pretty frequently for about 6-8 months with no catastrophic results. 100 mile round trip every day. I found out it does not like long trips. Engine starts feeling weak and tends to kick on the second 50 mile trip. Distributor sprays oil on the manifold heat shield most drives. Stock LSD whined badly when I got it, and the drives made it significantly worse. I ended up replacing it with a Kaaz 1.5. Oil cooler leaked, so I yanked it. Ordered an o-ring for the distributor, but torparts is fucking horribly slow at shipping shit.

Other than that, it was ok but severely less preferable to commute in than my 07 Civic. Now, I'm getting some strange crunching sounds in the back at low speeds and knocks from the front steering column. It's time to replace the steering rack and look at the clutch line maybe, but I suspect it's due for a smog failure, so I've got that to troubleshoot until January.

Really need to get my shit together and give it a proper tune up. Been wanting to drive it out to Colorado.

I'd definitely daily it if I worked closer to home. No problem scooting around town.

I had one of those when I was about 17. I saved up for it while working at a Chinese delivery place. Then one of the guys that worked there quit and I decided to do deliveries. I fucking loved it. I wasn't into cars too much then, it was like, the late 90s. That car made me a car guy. I nurtured it. I grew with it. I loved it. Then my dad bought a Subaru and beat me on the Akina downhill. Fucking hate it now.

Simplicity would be my immediate thought. Can tune carbs in your garage without a laptop and electronics being involved. Rejetting and tuning carbs is really simple stuff. They sound awesome too.

Realistically, a good injection system should blow carbs out the water, but a well sorted and tuned carb setup should cost a lot less and sound better.

I imagine unless you were building a race engine it wouldn't really matter. The carbs might have some trouble on cold mornings and be a little sluggish in the low end. It should still be ballistic above that though.

I'm on the fence of doing a 4AGE or 13B swap though. I do love me a rotary.

It's ease of tuning and ease of install, I'm doing a R1 Carb setup on my KE70, it makes decent power and it eliminates the hardest part of the swap which is the wiring. Plus carbs are easy to tune compared to a fuel injected setup because I don't have access to a dyno ect to do the initial map.

Yup, I pulled them off of a crashed R1, only issue with them is you have to put in bigger jets to use them on a car.
>>
>>13991484
simplicity of install is my guess. but youre at the extreme jet limits (probably even machined) and choke limits of bike carbs on a car.

ideally you would do itbs and in this day and age, with easy tuning and standalone ecus, I see no reason not to go EFI over bike carbs unless you're using a really small engine like a 1.2 liter or something.
>>
>>13995037
Price is a big selling point for me, I bought my carbs off of a wrecked R1 for $100 CDN and I made my own inlet manifold for like, another $100. An itb setup alone would have cost me that much, not to mention the standalone ECU required to run itbs on a 16v.
>>
>>13995010
That's pretty badass, balancing them might be a pain in the ass though. I'm still on the fence with exactly what I want to do, but I'm leaning towards a 4AGE swap into an AE71. I'll probably go webers though.

The main purpose of the project is to help me get into wrenching (decent understanding of it all, just not a real hands on person), and carbs seem like the way to go for my application. Done some light carb work on an MC14e engine, so realistically it should be easier than that.

I get thrown a little when people mention R1s in the same sentence as KE70s since I have one in the garage that's all...
>>
>>13995063
Yeah, but will you see any gains on a 1600cc engine with bike carbs? That's gotta be passed their choke limit.

On a 1200, 1300, 1500 maybe I could see it being beneficial and cost effective, but anything bigger they will have major trouble flowing enough air.

Honestly, I would do it anyway because they look cool and they sound cool. But, from pure performance they probably aren't better on anything bigger than 1500cc no?

Not him, but if I recall the Mikunis from an early R1 are 40mm. One for each cylinder and it SHOULD work. Obviously not as good as a twin 45mm Weber setup, but it should still beat the stock system.

I imagine the pain in the ass would be that they need to be standing up. It should sound wicked though.
>>
>>13995108
They make more power than the stock fuel injected setup. ITBs are king though if I was going to build the motor I would have gone with ITBs, but I just have a stock smallport running carbs.

>>13995092
E7 is a great platform to start with, they're have the same chassis as the AE86 so most of the stuff is either a direct bolt on or swaps over with a little work. I bought a rusty running GTS AE86 for $1500 from a buddy of mine and swapped everything, the rear end, front subframe, rack and pinion, suspension, gearbox, ect over to my KE70 so it drives as well and is just as capable as a hachi however when I drift it into a wall it's only $500 to replace my shell. I'm off to bed for tonight but if the thread is still up or there's a new one tomorrow I'll answer any questioms you have.
>>
>>13995162
That's good to know. I'm leaning towards getting a KE70/AE71 and doing a 16V 4AGE carby swap. I know ITBs is 'the' way to go for performance, but I just want something I can tweak myself and learn a ton from.

If it actually works and is fun to drive in the end then that's really just a bonus.

Can much extra power be made with the R1 carby swap or should I go the extra mile with the 45mm webers? I'm not looking to make a race engine, but if I can wind it up a bit over time then I definitely would like to.

Luckily I have an R1 if I want to go fast, so being fun to drive can take precedence.

Yeah for me it would avoid a lot of the electrical work. This will be my first 'big' car project, so wanting to make it easier for myself.

Can source a set of Mikunis off a wrecked R1 for a couple hundred usually. Not sure what new Webers would cost.

Webers are usually cheaper than mikunis and it's alot easier to find a premade inlet manifold for them online if you're unable to fab one yourself.
>>13995189
Webers make more power than the R1 carbs, I just think that they're cool so I went with that, my 4ag is a smallport and I think I'm making around 140 whp. Another option if you're more power hungry is to swap in a s13 front subframe and suspension with a celica supra rear end (with LSD). It will go in with limited modification and makes it easier to put a ka24de or sr20 in which both will make more power than I'm making stock, and ka24s can be had dirt cheap. Plus, you get a wider track and bigger brakes which is always good.
>>
>>13996587
What sort of money am I looking at for a 45mm Weber setup? That other anon piqued my interest with the R1 carbs, wrecked R1s are incredible common here so it'd cost me next to nothing to pull them off one at a wreckers.

>if you're more power hungry
I'm feeling the carb 4AGE (4AG?) setup more. Simplicity and tuning it myself is way more appealing than extra power.

If I could get 140whp it'd put a huge grin on my face considering what those cars weigh. My daily at the moment is making something like 60hp at the wheels....

In the long run I'd like to build it up a bit so I can wind up the rev limiter, but not sure how ambitious I'm being.

I plan to buy another sports car in the future, or fix my E36. Plus, like I said, I've got an R1 if I feel like going fast.

I'm sleeping in a minute, so if I don't reply I'll throw a response next time I see a thread about this in case you're around.

I am the anon with the R1s, I'd say a weber setup would be around $400-500 if you buy the inlet manifold instead of making it, if you can get R1 carbs for next to nothing definitely do that, You can buy the manifold from here: http://danstengineering.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=120
I pretty much copied them when I made mine. 140 whp is a pretty atainable goal, and it is a 4age they love to rev, getting a 11k redline like on initial d is pretty unrealistic though, unless you want to write a blank cheque to hasslegren. You can wind your 4age out all day and it won't break a sweat they love to be abused, and even when you blow the motor they can be had for around $500 where I live.

tfw i will never own one

Thank you so much man, bookmarked that so quickly haha.

Yeah I'd love to do the webers, but I think here the statistic at the moment is 25-30% of R1s are written off. We have a wreckers where you can pull parts yourself. I imagine carbs wouldn't cost shit.

What's the stock limiter? I haven't really looked into it much I'll be honest, somewhere around 8-9 would be pretty hilarious to drive though.

A huge part of the appeal to me is ultimately having a car I should be able to maintain and tweak almost completely by myself. The engines are pretty cheap here too, so I already thought if I make a colossal mistake I can go get a new engine.

The stock rev limiter on a big port is 7600 and on a small port it's 7800. Be careful when it's time to order your inlet manifold that you get the right one, I think I linked you the one for a small port so depending on which motor you get you'll have to buy the right manifold. I recommend buying a smallport from a ae92 if you can, it has a 7 rib block with oil squirters and a better head design and is generally a better platform to build up to around 200-210 hp NA should you choose to go that route.
4ages are a great engjne to tweak and maintain yourself, they're very simple and easy to work on and find parts for. I got my mechanical start working on 4ages.

What would need to be done to push that into 8000 range?

That's pretty much what I'm hoping to do.

Build the bottom end pretty much, lighter flywheel, aftermarket valve lifters, new rods, bigger cam, ect can be used to make it rev higher. It gets expensive fast, you're better off just building for hp rather than a specific rpm target. If you really wanna rev in the 8-9k range just swap a f20c, it's a hell of a motor and sooo much better than building a 4age. To get the same amount of power form a 4age as you would from a f20c you're going to need to put AT LEAST 10k into it, and even then it won't be as reliable as a stock f20.
>>
>>13997631
Never really liked that engine for some reason. You're right though, I think I'll focus on doing the basic carby swap for now and look into building things for power later--if I decide to bother at all.

I think I'd go the SR20 route or one of those RB30s with an RB25 head if I wanted power. Those engines are everywhere here.

LS1s are as well, but that's not the route I want to go at the moment. Could be funny one day though for sure.

I have an M52B28 in the garage, but that's a wiring nightmare for not that much power. Although boost on those can be great.

Thanks for the link. That was a cool read.

I bookmarked it to check out properly tomorrow. It's pretty late/early at the moment. Hoping they have an article on M52s or S50s.

I'll boost that M52 one day...
>>
>>13997675
Sr20 fits in easy if you go the S13 subframe route, rb motors are more than a little hard to fit. I don't know much about european engines so I have no clue about a M52, theres been a couple LS1 ae86s which are extremely fast. Rotories are another ppopular option that go like hell.
>>
>>13997822
I thought about an SR20 early on but decided to stick with the 4AGE for simplicities sake. Not after power really, so it didn't matter.

If an RB is a tricky fit an M52 would probably be a nightmare then. I have one sitting with a 5-speed out back that's all haha.

I did think about a 13B, rotaries are badass. Ended up deciding against it for this time around. I think it'll happen eventually though, I like two strokes and it's the same sort of silliness.

LSanything would be mental, but it's really not the way I want to go for now. In the future? Yeah I might. It'd need zero work to be stupid fast in a car that light. The cars they're usually coming out of weigh almost two tonnes (Commodore).
>>
>>13997866
I'm glad you stuck with the 4AGE, I'm not big on nissan swaps in muh toyotas. I wanted to to a 1UZ in mine but I don't really want to dump alot of money into what is effectively a missile car.

My dad owns this.

Corolla TTE Compressor. Only 500 made.
>>
>>13998213
What's different from the regular T-Sport?
>>
>>13998213

Other than replacing the suspension with BC coilovers (because the shocks and springs that came with the compressors always fail and they were about £600 a corner(!) to replace), the TTE front bumper and the air intake, the car is stock.

Oh, he got a new exhaust system made up (because, again, the original system wasn't up to scratch), with two exhaust tips off a TTE Rav4 backbox integrated in.
>>
>>13998232

Honestly, not a lot. Supercharger is the main change, bumping it up from the N/A ~190hp to ~220hp. A stiffer front top strut brace. A lot more underbody bracing.

There was an ad up here recently. $600 for two KE70s. So that'd be like $400-450 USD.

I've only seen one LHD one in the last 2 years and it had 400,000 kms and was rusted beyond salvation. The RHD ones are in better shape and factory GTZs but they usually have something wrong with them by the time the highschool fag who imported it sells it for $3k

also they're all Levins which I don't like as much but w/e, I would deal with it
