its a gutless, low power, oil drinking tank.

it will fucking last, but dont expect to get anything more than 100hp to the wheels.

it has the worst possible horse power torque curve, but it will get you there.

burns oil, and leaks oil.

valve stem seals leak down after resting, and it has 2 or maybe 3 piston rings, so it has a ton of blowby and the crank case vent is constantly blowing oil into the intake, that an the egr is notorious for blowing enough shit back in behind the throttle body to make it stick and freeze shut on a cold day.

You feel every single pound of that ridiculously heavy car, the steering is somehow both heavy and numb, even the turbo models are not that fast at all, the only good thing about them is that they're dirt cheap, RWD and have a better than nothing engine, everything else is absolute dogshit. And because they're so cheap, they're owned exclusively by ricers, beaners and wannabe drift faggots, none of which can afford to maintain them or keep them in any kind of decent shape. Don't even get me started on the suspension.

While inferior to the Mk.II, they look a lot like what a bmw 850 might have if it was made in the 80s. If you absolutely need an 80's wedge for cruising, I guess you could do worse because they are so cheap.

So it's basically a half-again 240sx.

It is a camry engine literally, mediocre totally not performance-oriented. I don't even know what the purpose of dual cams if the head is so narrow. All mentioned above about oil is true. I had 88 celica with 3sfe, topped oil full one day, three days later driving home noticed oil pressure gauge shows nothing, when I stopped bearings were shot already. Otherwise pretty usual Toyota FE engine. Very reliable and simple. Good engine in a camry, not so in st162
>>
>>13973588
Hmm well I have a few options but still unsure.

Breams ia a good swap however I can get better power for around the same price with an f20c

Regardless! Todays work was installing all carbon fibre bits to the side panels and putting in the factory belts. Replaced the headlight shit with carbon, and the sunroof!

Tomorrow is putting back in the custom carbon sub box!

Anyone have recomendations on a nice race style seat that is still good for daily use?

of course changing timing doesn't change lift.

that doesnt change the fact that cam timing is important aspect as to whether your valve will interfere with the piston.

+the yota motor only revs to around 6k
are you missing something about this
do I have to walk you though everything
>>
>>13973617
Yeah, no.

being non-interference is code for an engine with dogshit torque (low compression) and no power per liter (no lift and/or shit timing)

building an engine around the retarded limitation that it must not be interference is shooting yourself in the foot over a meme.
>>
>>13976593
youre just typing words that have no meaning or relevance to the argument.

lift and duration are not synonymous. you dont get the same effect of lift by simply increasing duration.

lift = more power everywhere all the time with no compromise
duration = power in a certain range by compromising power in another range

low lift = shit (in relevance to your head flow)

duration is a tuning parameter, lift is not.

Yes, probably

Don't trust me though since I have the AWD one not the FWD shitbox version. But it should be basically the same going oonly 1 year apart. On the other hand there were a number of changes between 95-96 on the GT-Four so maybe there was a facelift on FWD ones too.

Honestly I'd get the Corolla. They Celica is an FF car dressed up to look a bit more sporty, it's still a very practical vehicle and if popup headlights and the sleeker look are worth an extra 300 autism NEET bux to you by all means go for it (or stop spilling spaghetti and haggle a bit), otherwise they're both cheap shitboxes only the Corolla is lighter, has more doors and would probably be better on gas.

i know you might not like it but fitting some black D window steelies, tidying the paint and lowering it a little (not stance, just to give it a more super truck style while still being functional) way out of my price range desu.. but a man can dream.

Had to replace the 22RE in my gen-1 4Runner after the head gasket blew, and the guys that did the swap (Greg's Jap Auto) would only do synthetic blend after the break-in period. Now the oil's due to be changed again, should I swap it back to conventional? I'm not much of a mechanic yet, but my roommate who is suggests to go conventional since that's what the 22RE was designed for.

tl;dr synth or conventional for 22RE?

>>
>>13987975
If it was using synthetic from brand new, you can stay synthetic. They were designed to run on conventional though, so keep that in mind.

My friends 22re in her '95 4runner had really bad leak down through the rings when they went from conventional to synthetic, but the motor had been used hard for a long time. We changed it back to conventional and there was a significant drop in hte oil leaking through the rings
>>
>>13988939
Well, it's a remanufactured engine, wasn't crate or anything. It has synth blend in rather than straight synth. And yeah, I'm particularly asking due to them being designed for conventional. Guess I'll switch it and keep a close eye on it. Thanks!
>>
>>13988954

>>
>>13988978
Don't take this the wrong way, but why stick with the 3VZ? I've heard so many horror stories about them. If I still had one I'd plan to replace it with the 5VZ as soon as it was feasible. Almost did just that with my previous 92 4Runner but ended up dumping it for my 87 instead.

They really aren't that bad of a motor. Sure they lack on power but they have great low-end torque. Yes, the 5vz is a much better motor all around, but that doesn't make the 3vz a bad one.

Most of the horror stories are because people don't know how to maintain a vehicle lol.

I asked about the 3.4 swap. It wouldn't work with the automatic trans that i had, and the cost was almost double for a used engine and tranny versus 4 days of downtime for a brand new shiny 3.0 so i took the 3.0.

I've owned 4 of them now, and only one gave me major issues (The one i swapped, because the previous owner "rebuilt" it). I know these engines pretty much inside and out now which is a huge advantage to owning one because you know exactly what to do and what not to do to make them last.

The '89 got stolen and written off (Wish i still had that truck, i loved it) and the engine was dead on the '90 so i took that money and helped one truck out

Two weeks after rolling it, i found a stock 4runner with a blown engine and a slipping auto trans. Took it to my buddies shop and stripped my blue one of everything, then stripped all the garbage from the donor truck and did a 5spd swap on the new truck as well, and that engine is still going as strong as ever, even after being in a roll over and filling the cylinders with oil (It sat on its side for about an hour before we could get it back over)

Pretty much what I figured, my first 4Runner was a 91 2-door with the 3VZ and honestly I had no issues whatsoever with it engine-wise. Like I said I'm no mechanic so I'm sure there's things I could've done to that one and the 92 to keep them in good shape, I just didn't know enough. Trying to rectify that with my 87, I've learned a ton in the last year but still have a long ways to go.
Beautiful trucks btw, what color's the gen 2? Is that the gunmetal or blue? Too bad about the roll on the skyblue but I'm glad you were able to salvage the engine.

are first gen 4a-fe engines sohc or dohc?

I say it's gunmetal, others say it's dark dark blue. It's kind of on the verge between the two hahaha. Midnight blue/grey i guess? Honestly the sky blue 2nd truck was a nightmare. I got it with 17,000 in receipts but the work was all done by an idiot and i had nothing but problems from the first week i owned it.

I want to build a 1st gen to go overlanding to argentina in, but that wont happen for a long time. I know the longer i wait, the harder itll be to find a clean one, but i have other priorities.

If i still had my '89, I'd still be driving that bastard today. I'm in love with that body style

Yeah, I love my 87 but it's a beast to deal with. So much work still needs to be done but it's my only car, can't drydock it yet. Virtually no records from actual previous owner; the person I bought it from basically just tooled around in it for two summers before selling it to me. It's been Frankensteined, hard. Auto to manual conversion (sloppy so far as I can tell); replacement tailgate, engine bay side panels, and hood; and God knows what they did to the engine before the head blew. But body is straight, haven't found any accident damage. Just layers of caked grease on the undercarriage.
That was a beautiful 89, I'm sorry you lost it.

Shit happens. Live and learn i suppose. At least everything on the truck you have is relatively easy to learn on. I've done two auto-manual conversions now and they are easy to butcher if you're not careful, but it isn't hard at all to do it properly. Best of luck with the build man, always nice to see another old school 4runner enthusiast!

Here's a good one for ya. Sketchy trail to the top of a ridge in BC at about 8800ft. The whole trail was like this

The top is beautiful though. Not my picture, a buddy took it. But still

Great scenery, reminds me a bit of an area near Kenosha pass in Colorado.
