No, I also didn't stop watching anime because of the fans, I still have a lot of interest in it, I just don't talk about it with anyone, because both, the "underground" metal community (not necessarily always /metal/, but sometimes it can be) and the anime community are so small, that you don't have to go out of your way to avoid them. You won't find a black metal or anime head on the streets on your way to work or school, it's not hard, and even if you did the chances of them having any desire to talk to you is low.
