I'm listening to this, it's Kemialliset Ystävät

it's a freak folk album from back when everyone was freaking out about freak folk, and it sounds completely, entirely different from how I remember it sounding.

I know sometimes people like to compliment an album by saying "It sounds different every time!", like Trout Mask or Loveless, but I mean I don't even vaguely recognize this. It has been awhile

Has anyone else ever had this experience?

I only have Gensho left to do, but I didn't get around to it. I'm gonna have to listen to it multiple times anyways (just like Dronevil, which is one of the reasons this has taken so long) but I'll start Thrift Store Tourney Tomorrow as well hopefully.

Anyways, from best to worst:

>Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke & Oren Ambarchi - I Wonder...
Def one of my AOTYSF. Haino has surprised me a lot but then out of nowhere the dude is speaking English which I can recall him doing on any of the material I've heard. Excellent bass and drum work here, especially on the last track, and Haino is just doin' his thing the whole while ya know? Middle two tracks drag a bit in parts that aren't necessarily to their benefit, but nothing egregiously so.

Real talk tho are the rest of their collabs as good as this? I probably need to backlog those ASAP.
8

>Boris With Merzbow - Rock Dream
Ah yeh. This has some fucking sick moments and I'm sure I don't need to tell you why since this is Boris and Merzbow I mean c'mon. However, there are two big problems with this: Takeshi's constant "YEAH"s in some tracks occasionally get tiresome, and this suffers all the recording shitties you'd expect in a metal/noise live collab album. I imagine they did their best mixing everything, but there's not many ways to get such a thing sounding that great.
8

>LRD - Heavier Than a Death in the Family
This has one of my favorite versions of "Night of the Assassins" I can remember off the top of my head, but otherwise this is pretty much what you'd expect from these guys. Tracks 2 and 5 are nothing special, while the other four are basically what you've heard before. A good comp, just nothing to sing praises about.
7
>>
>>65554682

>John Coltrane - Ascension
I really enjoyed this at the beginning. "Oh yeah, this is one of his bests!" After about 12 minutes, I kinda started to lose interest. After side one, I was bored. When side two was done, I thought that that was a pretty easy 180 I did on this thing. Immediately playing it again showed some more strong points, but I can't shake the feeling that this is just inherently more restrictive than some "free" albums and I really just don't love it as much. I respect the dude to hell and back, but this was just pretty good.
6

>Alice Coltrane feat. Pharoah Sanders - Journey in Satchidananda
While I liked a lot of this, especially the last half, this really pales in comparison to Karma, which people often compare it to. I wouldn't call that album "free" but the spiritual qualities it has are tangible and feel guided, while this just feels floaty and occasionally obtuse. Mrs. Coltrane is a great harp player but I'm not entirely sold on the mixing of this brand of jazz and the Hindu music. Seems somewhat unblended in this circumstance.
6

>Boris - Dronevil
Only learned that this album is meant to have both discs play together (like Gensho) when I was most of the way done with the first disc "drone". Apart, the experience is a 4, but the ambient pieces do add a lot to the heavier parts, but I just wasn't a huge fan of the more empty spots. Together the experience is a 6, but I'm gonna average them out because I'm autistic.
5
>>
>>65554696

>The Gerogerigegege - 燃えない灰 (Moenai Hai)
Literally trollface the album. First song is actually an interesting dark ambient piece for a few minutes, but then dissolves into nothing special. Second track is a pretty effective jumpscare, with an almost 15-minute noise/shoegaze track. Pretty cool for a few minutes, but then it's not. After like seven minutes of the exact same thing eventually another rhythm comes in, but it's not for a while. 3rd track is bullshit lowercase for 20 minutes. 4th track has another epic jumpscare, and then some shithead kid laughs his ass off, then silence, then a toy instrument. The whole time I could only imagine how fun it would be to plan an album like this, especially when dumb fanboys will love it regardless. Has some radical moments, but it's basically the scary maze game in audible form.
5

>Simon Finn - Pass the Distance
Why do I keep doing avant-folk and Current 93-likes? It's not going to make me happy and only going to piss off /daily/ more. Jerusalem was fantastic, but I didn't really find much more of substance here, even with the bonus tracks.
4

>The Microphones - Don't Wake Me Up
There's like 5 worse versions of songs later refined on the Glow Part 2. Felt like people give these extra Microphones/Mount Eerie albums more than they're due. Best part of the album are the few seconds where Phil is covering Good Vibrations, which would've been the best song on here by far if left in tact.
4

If these reviews are terrible I'm sorry, but I felt most of these felt a proper "more-than-a-'review'" ya know? It's also 3 AM and I've been up for nearly 22 hours so I'm burnt out as shit. Bed for now. Good night.

I feel cheated.
The bunch of albums I got came with a .txt ile that sayed a couple lines about the band's history, and after a bit of research and fact-checking, turns out it's full of bollocks when it comes to post-1990 lineup changes.
I feel cheated, the last week of my life has been a lie. Tetsuo sakurai hasn't been here since The Last Members and I couldn't notice it. All the more credit to his replacement Yoshihiro Naruse.
Said research also mde me realize the futility of my attempt to listen to all they have done. Ideally I'd like to check the side projects of the various members but Minoru Mukaiya's solo LPs are apperently not ripped, discogs and many other refuse to aknowledge Jimsaku's existence, Naruse's earlier band's work is also nowhere to be found.
And most importantly : I'll never hear it all until I can go to Kyushu and Tokyo to take the train and hear the station announcement themes and jingles composed by Minoru Mukaiya

35 down, 28 to go. Life seems so meaningless now.

>Same here, I find more beauty in Vladimir Martynov's minimalist compositions and Terry Riley's modern experimentation more so than any purist take on classical. (Though every time Hampus puts on something in the plug it makes me think twice about it)
Neat, I'm doing something right then.
>>
>>65557163
Yeah I also think communism is good in theory but would never really work out. Damn though, an ardent communist background. What a twist.
>>
>>65557195
Yo hampus, I wanted to add jtg to my droning thingy but he isn't responding.
So can you give me ~30 albums for me to drone you? Please try and have not too many avant-garde/free jazz with the jazz bits, same for modern classical.
>>
I came home to mum's yesterday. I'll be living with all my clothes in a bag for almost three months. No desktop computer, no good speakers, no good TV, slow broadband. Also my summer classes started a few days ago and I already regret taking them, I wanna have some free time but really won't at all. Life is hell.

>After about 12 minutes, I kinda started to lose interest.
"listening" while doing other things is really not listening. That's why people "lose interest". Also the fact that they don't know the first thing about the music they're hearing.

>>65554682
>This has one of my favorite versions of "Night of the Assassins" I can remember off the top of my head
It's literally the same as on '77 live, isn't it?
>>
>>65554682
>This has one of my favorite versions of "Night of the Assassins" I can remember off the top of my head, but otherwise this is pretty much what you'd expect from these guys. Tracks 2 and 5 are nothing special, while the other four are basically what you've heard before. A good comp, just nothing to sing praises about.
Also it's not "basically what you've heard before". Heavier is just a bootleg of songs released other places (except for one song, I think).
>>
>>65555138
>And also not only do I feel the tracks flow more naturally on '77 live, but also the fact that the better tracks are there + it's pretty much what I've already heard on '77 live just with worse listing so yeah 7/10 seems like a fair score.

>also I'm very tired so I'm sorry if I don't seem articulate.
I legitimately think you didn't listen to Heavier attentively and therefore thought it was all new songs or versions of songs.
>>
>>65555766
Just got out of bend, gonna spend the day making a design specification for a website since I need to finish that before Sunday for school.
>>
>>65557223
>Please try and have not too many avant-garde/free jazz with the jazz bits, same for modern classical.
I don't understand these criteria. But sure, I'll give you some thirty albums a bit later.
>>
>>65557356
Just not too much avant-garde/free jazz compared to other forms of jazz and the same for moder classical and classical. (Don't know if that's necessary with what you like but normally when I do this I get 100% "avant-garde" stuff and I try to prevent that by saying this)
>>
>>65557378
Alright, don't worry then, I'm not an avant.

Are you okay with records that are several hours long? They could substitute a few other shorter ones.
>>
>>65557390
Nah it's fine, the other person I'm droning also has stuff like beethoven's complete piano sonatas. Won't listen in one time anyway, so everything is good.
>>
>>65557356
didn't you have that 80 things hampus likes chart?
i remember you posting it last year here on /daily/, it had stuff like space is the place, divorce lawyers, and out to lunch.
>>
>>65557399
>>65557399
Very well. I guess I shouldn't add Beethoven's piano sonatas then.

>>65557417
Yes, but he's asking for like 30 albums. I can curate a better list.
>>
>>65557435
Alright, I was gonna ask for it to possibly drone you in the future but I'll just grab the 30 albums you give rudi
>>
>>65556168
I'm sorry for your loss. Might have to Just cut your losses though.

>>65557435
Yo hampus, have you listened to anything particularly good lately? Like, anything that would've made the top 30 that wasn't in your last chart?
>>
>>65557469
I don't have the old chart myself really.

>>65557493
Uh, I dunno. I don't really listen to as much music anymore. And I still despise the concept of those lists.
>>
>>65557501
Figured as much on both fronts. Ah well. More power to you, then.

Very late calendar """"""""""""reviews""""""""""""

I'll keep these short again (I think at this point they'll all just start getting short)

The Bulgarian Voices Angelite & Moscow Art Trio With Huun-Huur-Tu - Mountain Tale

I feel like I've really been underrating the power of the voice. I loved the vocals on this. Great
harmonization, great timbre, great throat singing, great everything honestly when it came to the vocals. My problem with this album is the fusion they were bringing in. This really is just a personal
thing because I was expecting this to be more traditional but I wasn't enjoying what they were doing with that stuff. This shouldn't stop someone interested in experiments with folk from listening to the album cause it's really just me. Very good album. 4/5.

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

I didn't like this as much as I thought I would. I don't know why. I just thought that the songs were either boring or not very enjoyable sometimes. Morrison's voice is also something I'm not a huge fan of. I can't deny that the music here is well arranged or that it's a creative album but it just didn't do much for me. Still an alright album in my book. 3/5.

But seriously, it doesn't matter. A lot of us are not gonna call you garbage or anything for liking things we don't like very much. The point of these threads is to talking about how your musical exploration has been going, not to compare music penises.
>>
>>65558209
Tbh it was just an example, I'm not the hugest Grimes fan. I've just listend to Art Angels for the first time and some tracks are really good others I don't care for that much. Based on the good tracks I'd probably give it a 6/10, but I need to listen to it a few more time, maybe it would even climb up to 7/10 with a few more tries. It's just a creative and catchy pop album to me. Much better than the snooze coming out of many other pop artists nowadays.
>>
>>65558264
I consider posting here then, seems like a nice way to listen more carefully to albums. I've started a daily-chart 2 days ago but was too anxious posting it.

Okay. I actually put a little effort in this thing even. I'm re-listening also to a lot of stuff I already listend to often for these charts in the future to organize my brain again to what I like. CCCP I listend to for the first time based on the cover and I love it. I'd love to say I'm not influenced by the politics of the musician, but passionate leftist bands are my sweet spot. A very unique album in my opinion. The Infamous might be my favorite Hip Hop album of all time. The best thing about it are the beats. How is this from 1995? Sounds like it could have been released today. Art Angels I haven't decided yet, but it's pretty decent. I'm open for suggestions for the next days.

Yeah I'm ok changing scores if my opinion changes. I try to make mention of it, I guess

For my tourney, I'm bumping Acid Mothers Temple - La Novia from 3 to 3.5-, because I didn't really recall how much variety it has. The little review I wrote Wednesday was actually p.bad unfortunately. v.v.nice variety of sounds here, and all done v.well. more interested in exploring more of this group after relistening Thursday, I guess it finally clicked how much of it sounds like an extended mix of the psych, world and ambient I've enjoyed. skeptical about how much interest I'll have... Curious but skeptical. 3.5-, and Jangle still progresses
