Korn insists they're not metal--that's Judas Priest, all 4/4 pomp and solos. But they nonetheless demonstrate that the essence of metal, a mode of expression it seems will be with us for as long as ordinary whiteboys hate themselves, fear girls, and are permitted to rage against a world they'll never beat, is self-obliterating volume and self-aggrandizing display. Eerie bridges, odd licks, and scat vocals abound. How much the target audience identifies with Jonathan Davis's lyrics--"Lemme kiss your lifeless skin", "cameltosis", and "you trick-ass slut" is unclear. But I'm parent enough to hope that they find a more fully-forced designate that someone who's idea of social commentary is netcasting softcore S&M to every teenager with a login. C+
