"Reviews" from best to worst

>Ghost Bath - Moonlover
I really enjoyed a lot of the emotion behind this. At first I hated the dude's voice, but next listens I really thought it fit the depressive atmosphere. Largest flaw on Moonlover is the first part of "The Silver Flower" and "Beneath the Shade Tree" which are decent, but not up to par with the rest of the album.

>Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - s/t (Moanin'
NICE

FUCKING

DRUUUUUUMS

First four tracks are bliss, and the last two are whatever imo. Really liked Free For All a lot more honestly, but this one still kicks ass.

>Boris - Boris Performing "Flood"
It's Flood! Except it's half as long which for some might not be a detriment. Pretty much cuts out the first and last song out in their entirety and starts instead with a droning noise piece. Gorilla recording quality is the largest flaw here, as the most dynamic moments are largely lacking because of this.

>Brave Little Abacus - Masked Dancers
These guys have a lot of solid and dense instrumentation, but god, why are half of every song so EMPTY. Like seriously, this album is like 80% "build up" and occasionally it pays off, but not always. Shit's like 20 minutes longer than it needs to be, but still satisfying sometimes.
6

>King Crimson - The Power to Believe
The first four tracks were alright, but my god, they're just making really generic prog now. Like if you had told me this was "just some prog band from Idaho" I would've believed you, what the fuck is Fripp doing?
4

>King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair
The first song is alright, but my god, this is the absolute worst of the "Talking Heads Rip-Off" era I've heard thus far. Really shitty stuff.

EXTRA BONUS REVIEW

>Andy Kaufman - Andy and His Grandmother
This isn't really a great wholesome experience, and more the best cuts of ~80 hours of tape where Andy Kaufman is doing a lot of shit to fuck with people. He's harassing prostitutes, taxi drivers, his own family, etc. by shoving a tape recorder in their face and trying to interview them. One hilarious moment is when he's driving with his grandmother saying his car is tracked by "satellite" and will stop veering off the road if he lets go, so he does and his grandma flips the fuck out, and he gets pulled over. In one part he's interviewing animals, and I can't fully explain without going over the text limit, but "Andy's English Friend Paul" had me near crying. Last track he’s talking with Zmuda about how he’d fake his death every few years as a practical joke, so it’s pretty clear to see why everyone would make all those conspiracy theories about him back in the day, which I imagine if they released this earlier would’ve only more cemented. If you're a fan of the guy's work or interested in the dude, definitely try this out, otherwise give it a pass.

>Jandek - Where Do You Go From Here

I was preparing myself for this Corwood release in a way. I saw the tag “free jazz” and I saw the Youngs/Neilson support squad too. I watched Glasgow Sunday and Newcastle Sunday, so I had an idea of what the sound is going to be like.

Was I prepared for this? Did I have an idea what direction this album will take?

No. Oh no.

What the hell is going on?

Where Do You Go From Here is the 51st album by the Corwood Industries Representative. It features 12 untitled tracks.

Part One breaks all my expectations. When reading the “free jazz” tag, I expected this is going to be something like what they did on the first 2 Sunday shows in a more thought out way and with less edge. What I got instead is a soft, steady drum pace with a piano waltzing in. The rep shows up with a harmonica. The most interesting thing about this whole ordeal is how soothing and calm this is. Especially compared to all the broken-down elements of all the previous Jandek records. Neilson is exploring the unconventional drum-stick hits while Youngs keeps playing this somber piano.

Part Two starts off with chimes percussion and a flute. I shit you not. The piano just adds on to the soothing peace. I don’t think I have heard a Jandek record this bright. The serenity on this track is absolutely surreal. Bravo rep. Bravo.

Part Three opens up with some distortion control from the bass guitar ala Takayanagi and this clean guitar tone with slight delay and soft reverb over it. Sounds exactly like something Haino would deploy on his Colors series. Neilson plays some standard soft drum improvs over this all, letting the track obtain some dynamical direction. The last minute or so features more obsolete drumming melting in with the guitar/bass duo.

The beginning of Part Four features a creaking chair, a repetitive piano (possibly looped), more reverberated guitar and Alex Neilson’s wonderfully hollow drum set. The track itself is hypnotic. Makes me think of time progression, especially with the piano staying the same. The guitar tries to parody the piano at times. Eventually, Sterling speaks. “Make up your mind / Decide” is all he says. He keeps repeating it in a soft voice, almost as though he travelled back into his youth days. As the piano leaves, we are introduced to the next track.

Part Five with another switch up. Sterling behind the piano, playing rippled notes. Youngs returns to the bass and plays long, sustained notes. Alex keeps messing around with the drums. The “Make up your mind/ You Decide or Not Decide” reappears but I refuse to believe that it is the same person singing. This singing is much closer to what I would traditionally perceive as “singing”. It is probably Youngs behind the vocals.

Part Six brings back the flute/bass/drums trio. The section is less than 2 minutes, but it manages to deliver emotional trills from the flute and some roaring drums. The drum set on this album sounds phenomenal, especially the snare.

I could swear that Part Seven boasts the exact same tone/technique Haino uses. It could easily pass off as a Fushitsusha track. The notes just go up and down the fret, concentrating on the picking tempo. The bass swirls around like a snake around all this with Youngs working on his slides a lot. Alex is probably the major talent of this show so far. Great jazz drumming from him.

Part Eight returns to the feedback work from Youngs and the clean space guitar from the Corwood Representative. I had this Devi Ever fuzz pedal that had this drone generator built in and I feel like this is exactly what Youngs is using on this track. In terms of the guitar, I feel like Sterling works around established chords this time and simply picks the strings. The track closes off with Neilson’s kick drum hits.

A distressing piano chord (Youngs) and some harmonica work (Rep) on Part Nine make things slightly more distressing, “Where do you go from here… / Make up your mind / Decide.” sings Sterling in between his harmonica solos. The drums bring in the track towards the conclusion, where Youngs just repeatedly plays the dying high E note.

Part Ten brings back the Rep to the piano, Youngs to the vocals(?) and Alex takes on the brighter percussion here. The vocalist reprises the thematic lyrics that have been showing up this whole time. The flute reappears right after the vocals section ends, so I would assume Alex is playing these. The pace of the album returns to the peaceful direction.

It stays on it for Part Eleven. Only one and a half minutes long, it brings back the chime bell percussion along with Neilson’s drums.

Part Twelve, the closing part of the piece, lasts 14 minutes. Guitar / piano / drums trio I believe. Broken notes from all the sides, calmly leading the piece into a state of oblivion. The hypnotic softness of the chamber ensemble swirls all the sounds into one free mix of indeterminacy. Neilson’s occasional crash cymbal overwhelms the entire mix of lost piano chords and Smith’s tuned guitar, breaking down the wandering thoughts of the other two performers. Occasionally you can hear the connection between this and the first live performances from the trio, mostly because of Smith’s guitar technique. Almost 12 minutes in, an accordion appears alongside the guitar and the drums, leading this free composition into a sense of closure. One last bend of the guitar and it is all over.

It is obvious that the twelve tracks connect into a single piece.

What’s interesting to see is that the signature Jandekian theme of loss is going through yet another reincarnation process, but this time it probably takes the most melodic, serene and rooted down form. During the Glasgow and the Newcastle performance I saw how composed these guys could get once they get a sense of each other’s presence, but this is something else. The improvisation is so effortless and free on here that I’m surprised this wasn’t thoroughly composed.

Brilliant chemistry between the players, fantastic record. I was hooked for every singe second. This has been one of the greatest and most coherent things the Jandek project has produced. Instant 9+/10 rating on this one, possible 10 in the future.

The question is: where will these guys go from here?

Listening to this right now and quite enjoying it.
It's free jazz with that kind of culty tribal feel (sadly no bongos).
The cello is prominantly featured throughout, ranging from nice droning backrounds to crazy squealing.
Nice drums and flute.

Giving this a: Recommended if you think you'll like Dolphy and Comus' bastard child.

http://desktopthread.com/Tripcode_Explorer/ you just download a tripfinding program, then check the tripcode it find on the Tripcode Test part and you can just use it as a trip. Doesn't work for secure trips, though, and it can take a long time to find a tripcode you like. I think I had this one run overnight to find this code and that was after a bunch of failures with ones with crazy capitalization or ones that didn't work.

It also puts a LOT of stress on your PC (usually it's constant 100% no matter what else is running) and generates a LOT of heat (90c on an intel stock heatsink with a 120mm fan taped to it) so don't try and run this on a laptop or something. I think I had generated a quadrillion or more trips before finding this one.
That being said, that's mostly because I inputted a 6 character phrase. Something like putting /mu/ in will generate thousands in a minute.
>>
>>65445039
I also suggest you run it a long time regardless so it's harder for someone just to mine your tripcode and use it against you.

Jackson Browne - Late for the Sky

Not much here grabbed my attention, and nothing really held it. Some up tempo, some slower. Forgettable lyrics, forgettable melodies. A few interesting moments, but by the end of the album I've forgotten what they are, except for the car-door-slam-interrupts-song gimmick. Doesn't even sound like Browne himself is interested, for the most part. Still, comfy sound, and only offensive for its lack of creativity. I don't think I'll ever intentionally spend time listening to this or seeking out more.
2.5--, like unflavored oatmeal.

I hung out with a girl recently who is a devout Christian. During a party, she lost her phone and realised when we were at Subway to buy drunk nightsnacks. I was flabbergasted.

I actually was wondering, how do you feel about comparing traditional albums to modern ones? Because the majority of traditional ones are just compilations, since a lot of those artists didn't make their music with an "album" in mind.
It drives me up the fucking wall since the music is good but never feels like more than a pile of songs, because I'm so used to the modern record. That is, songs arranged methodically by the artist

>>65445903
I'm not sure what you mean. Many traditional folk recordings are compilations from a certain region and demonstrate the musical traditions native to that region, which is much better than just hearing a single artist play their ouvre. I find those to be the very best recordings of traditional musics. Other compilations can focus on either larger regions (like the series of albums of Middle Eastern music on Folkways) or be international (Berlin phonogramm arkiv), both of which are great to research with broader strokes and find what's interesting to delve deeper into.

The album format is really just a rockist invention and it doesn't really apply to anything but "concept albums".
>>
>>65445903

I guess I'm mainly referring to a single artist release- particularly the Cajun record you recommended me, the balfa boys. It was good, but the pacing was so curiously disjointed, it took away from my enjoyment. Kind of disheartening. I'll try more VA comps next time I try trad.

Another question: hearing lots of traditional music, surely you can pick up influences in contemporary works now. Do any contemporary works, in your opinion, express these influences or themes particularly well? Or does it all sound like degenerate bastardizations to you?

>>65445983
I kind of always assumed the artist did that arranging. That's a little spooky.

>>65445970
>rockist invention
I'm sure that was intentionally casually inflammatory, but wew

Its like people forget that physical records and all implied technical constraints were ever a thing. Also, while supply and demand doesn't perfectly work here because the record label generally has better information than the consumer, the consumer does demand records from the label. It is that reason why folk compilations exist as well as albums of popular music or recordings of classical, because it's what the consumer was comfortable with.

Arguably artists may have gotten way too attached to something borne from consumer needs and technical limitations.

>>65445983
Don't forget to make the second half generally weaker than the first

You've got to remember that traditional musics is song based, not album based. Generally each song will have its own place in some kind of social setting, such as funerals, weddings, dances, and so on. The concept of "album" is nothing more than a popular music idea that is in no way related to traditional musics.

>Another question: hearing lots of traditional music, surely you can pick up influences in contemporary works now. Do any contemporary works, in your opinion, express these influences or themes particularly well? Or does it all sound like degenerate bastardizations to you?
Much more so in film music than anything else. I don't hear much traditional music influences in the popular musics I listen to, pop music is too much its own paradigm these days, following entirely western traditions.

Nice chart, quick question: Do you really like jazz?
I always see people's charts that have 2-3 of the classic jazz albums and wonder if they poured through the genre and arrived at their favourites (unlikely) or just listened to the titans and decided to include them?

>>65446250

>>
>>65446163
I really enjoy meeting strange people. I meet a lot of normal people as well, but they're nowhere near as fun.

Yes, it was intentionally inflammatory. The album was of course born from the fact that technical limitations were lifted and artists could release larger chunks of music at once. If anything, the single is the most consumerist pop music format. The reason a lot of music is still released in the album format outside of popular music is because that's what a CD can contain, and it's still the most popular physical format (unless hipsters have made vinyls take over again?)

A lot of traditional music is actually not released as albums at all, but as single song recordings, digitally and online. This is the format that makes the most sense for musicologists, as they will want to hear one song at a time and analyse it and/or read other people's analyses of it. Really the only folk music compilations that are released are on labels, which are out to make a profit.

>>65446280
>just listened to the titans and decided to include them?
This. Definitely this. Way too few /mu/tants have listened to more than a few handfulls of jazz. The whole "Coltrane, Miles, the list goes on" (or on /daily/ Brötzmann and similar """experimental""" jazz artists) meme is reality.

How is this a debate, literally every album is structured different.
The only objective truth is that albums from the vinyl era tend to include louder songs (often times the singles) on the edges of the record so there's less dynamic compression.

Aphex Twin - Druqks
30 Tracks, 100 Minutes.
2001.

This album's pretty decent, there's a lot of great stuff on here. The only problem is that it's 100 minutes long. You could say that because it's two 50 minute discs it doesn't matter. It wouldn't matter if most of the album was just filler. There are only maybe one or two tracks under three minutes worth listening to. If you were to take all the tracks over three minutes plus Avril, it would trim the album down by almost thirty minutes, and nothing of value would be lost. 6.1.

This is my first time listening to Cro-mags, and also my first time consciously listening to crossover-thrash. I like it a lot more than just regular hardcore, gives it a lot more dynamic, and longer song lengths with room for solos. I'm excited to listen to their hugely influential debut and sophomore albums, which I would have listened to first if Spotify had them.

Holy shit saw them about a month ago in New Orleans. People tried to do requests right after their first track and Anton goes "You know what? Fuck your request! I didn't write songs my whole life so you can tell me what to play. We are just going to play till they kick us out, how about that?" They basically played all of their hits, including Wisdom and Aenomone of course, but they also played some of his new age stuff with some really good wall of sound drone rock outs.

I have so much more respect for artists that play what they want to play rather than what the audience wants to hear. I remember I saw Iceage right after their new albums came out and I planned on buying it at the show and listening to it for the first time on vinyl. At the show, they played 100% new material, meaning I didn't know a single song they played. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to, and that attitude of progressing as an artist on their own watch really struck a chord with me.

I was hoping mewithoutYou would play songs from Its All Crazy but they didn't. My biggest mistake was probably going to a mwY show

And I really hesitate to call Fahey consistent--he was anything but for the bulk of his career--but from 1959 to 1971 he did not release a single bad album.

And I'm not at all a fan, but I think Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen are good bets.

Those facebook live deals are weird and awkward

Okay I'm gonna do this. Starting with Owls. So far, as field recordings go, this is pretty disturbing. Slightly more than Buyer's Market I would say. Hopefully this gets less screechy.

I would suggest listening to Hangable Auto Bulb even though it's not part of his main discog. IMO It's one of his best albums.

I've listened to everything in Modest Mouse's discography. Every album, single, bootleg, demo, etc. I've listened to all of Radiohead's studio discography, and a bunch of EPs and live things. Unlike the MM discog, very little of that was worth it. Same for Animal Collective, but their EPs are a bit more rewarding, and their bootlegs fewer in number.

I'm actually pretty close to completing AMM's discography, but I'll probably never get around to it. I've also listened to an absurd amount of John Fahey's discography (like 27 studio albums, live albums, and compilations) but what I haven't heard is mostly just him repackaging his old material in new albums. So I might not ever get around to that either.

At some point I'll finish of the remnants of Basic Channel's extended discography, and finishing Beefheart's discography would actually be pretty enjoyable I imagine, so I might try that soon.

Good luck with Aphex though. He has released a LOT of shit under different aliases over the decades.

>>65451519
What was your favorite Animal Collective EP's? I like their EP "Prospect Hummer" more than anything they ever did.
>>
>>65451645
I thought I had listened to more AnCo EPs, but looking at my library I only have People, Water Curses, and Fall Be Kind. Of those, I'd have to go with Fall Be Kind. (Looking at their rym though, they don't even have that many legit EPs, so I guess I'm not that far off.)

Anyway, I've been meaning to listen to Propsect Hummer for a while though because I was a fan of Vashti Bunyan's Just Another Diamond Day album.
