you've got a good point. I do, however, like jazz. It just so happens that my favourites are pretty classic. To be honest, I can never decide which I prefer out of The Black Saint and A Love Supreme, but the actual tone of Mingus's playing is so much more unique to me, and the motifs that reoccur throughout the piece are introduced so carefully and cleverly that they both stand out as recognisable melodies, and merge with the phrases of melody surrounding them... if I'm making sense.
I went to see Archie Shepp play in London the other night, it was fantastic. My favourite albums from him are "Yasmina, a Black Woman / Poem for Malcolm" and "Attica Blues". Obviously he's a bit too old nowadays to play the wilder free jazz stuff, but he actually sung a lot, which surprised me, and he growled the blues like I didn't think was possible.

"Quirky" indie with that had the potential of some rather lush and beautiful instrumentation, but it was quickly abandon for standard electro pop instead. The use of traditional instruments (with the like of piano, banjo, and even a xylophone) really grips my attention with how big and comfy it sounds. But then it all clashes with typical electronic indie beats and distorted field recordings.
But really this is really a atypical indie experience for me, A few standout song that are pretty damn good mixed bland filler tracks. A constant bounce between good and bad. When I think about it I don't think I ever experienced a "killer" indie album from beginning to end. I don't think the genre is for me.

Same with this Earthless/Harsh Toke split-EP (single?). I've really dug some Earthless in the past, but I think Harsh Toke has the edge here. Like one of the best songs of the year for me. Also I did not particularly enjoy long season. Starts off with pretty good with minimal keyboards and I enjoy whenever they're present in the music but too often falls into boring dream pop (and also whatever they're trying to do about fourteen minutes in) and the vocals are pretty off putting too. Nonetheless beautifully arranged at many times. Not terrible, might need some more listens I will not give for now.

So our release show Saturday was a thundering success. The venue got sold out which means there must have been more than a 100 people. We played a great show, as did the two other bands. I got a tattoo of a spooky ghost.

Now I feel like a dick because I know i couldn't handle the same criticism, but w/e hopefully I don't ruin your day or something :p
here goes:
I want to like this more, I really do, but I'm fixated on the lyrics and singing (i'm known to do this). The drumming is really great, and sets the pace of the album more than any instrument imo. The guitar hooks are solid and the interplay feels both natural and tight.
If I could give serious criticism it would be:
1. More complex lyrics and song structures
2. More emotional or unique vocal delivery [show more personality!]
3. Mix it up! Throw some different flavour into a few songs, it feels very samey-samey, but at least it's consistent.
You guys are really cool, but due to ^^^ I can't put it into "love it" territory. There's some really great musicianship however and I'm definitely interested in hearing upcoming endeavours.

I can tell you that a lot of our new songs are quite different from these, we even have some proper ballads now.
I don't know what to say about my vocals, but i do think i sing better now than i did during the recordings.

Yay, done with my exams for now! Hopefully I did not botch them too bad. I did not find them too difficult so either I completely misunderstood the assignment or I am a bit smarter than I assumed.
Now for nine days of easy-living. I will listen to more dub, Aube and japanoise. Probably also that musique concrete thing that anon recommended yesterday.
Also got back into a playing Everquest 2. At least for a little bit.

You can explore one feeling in different ways on an album. Pet Sounds does this in a good way. But if you do it in a way that isn't great, some tracks can become redundant if they don't do anything particularly new when in comparison with the rest of the album.

Aphex Twin - ...I Care Because You Do
12 Tracks, 64 Minutes.
1995.
I enjoyed ICBYD quite a bit. Definitely one of his better works. Everything on this album feels like it was meant to be. Perhaps not to the same degree of preciseness featured on Syro, but nonetheless very well composed. The big problem with this album is how annoying it can be at times. If I complete the entire RDJ discography one day, I might skip the damn Ventolin EP. Having Ventolin so early also means all the high pitched tweets and twirps through out the rest of the album really annoy you. 7.4
my musical consumption lately has been bandcamp artists so i figured I'd review one
>Lydia Brunch - soundtrack for sunny days (acoustic, instrumental, EP, 2016)
Lydia is an interesting artist. When originally releasing this album (and apparently the last of which will be completely instrumental) she decided to take it down after thinking it to not be very good. Eventually others were able to convince her to reupload with the tracks they didn't enjoy as much left out.
Although no real material has surfaced from them, this newest EP might give me insight into what could be in store regarding their future output.
A collection of instrumental tracks all done with acoustic and electric guitars,there are hints of experimentation that leave me anticipating what the bulk of songs will sound like when they arrive with lyrics and more composition.
Tracks like "my room's light bulb is now fixed and fully functional" (my favorite) and "omelette" feature short-lived but sweet melodies offering Lydia's scope of instrumentation not just limited to a solo acoustic guitar while "this heat is killing me" features sour notes that show she's not above breaking the calm atmosphere for something that leans on the more experimental side.
Then there's "extreme song". It passes through as fast as bullet and leaves you wondering where it's heading since it almost seems so out of place with it's condensed distortion. This track leaves me the most anxious when it comes to waiting for Brunch's next release since it's a good sign that we'll be hearing audio experimentation coupled with singer-songwriter material.
That's about all I have to say about it. More like a teaser trailer than anything but I'm enjoying it on my fourth listen still so that's a good sign.
