Walt Dickerson - To My Queen
Really phenomenal piece so far, very sparse and emotive instrumentation.
It's nice seeing the vibes take front stage, and being implemented so well.
Also Andrew Hill's piano is tight as always, he always knows where to add and where to ride it out; he is fucking incredible on everything from this time period.

Ween “Extras”. Regular reviews coming eventually idk

Finally getting into the live stuff, which I’ve been looking forward to.

>Paintin’ the Town Brown: ’90-’98 (2CDs)
Allegedly released without Ween’s okay, and Deaner has always shat on this album, but there’s a lot of great stuff about it. The few originals are better than anything on La Cucaracha. Voodoo Lady, I can’t Put My Finger On It, She Fucks Me, Awesome Sound, hell, not all of these are “better” than the originals, but they sure give them a run for their money. The few problems I see here are the 2nd disc and the overall recording quality. While the quality isn’t terrible for a live album, it’s just barely passible. I THINK there’s a few extra instrumentals in there, but I can’t quite make them out well enough. It’s often muddy and makes really dynamic moments kinda lame. Also Poopship Destroyer is 26 minutes long, and barely merits it at all. It’s pretty uneventful and doesn’t merit being over three minutes. Huge waste of disc space, honestly. Vallejo is a little better, but you know that song on The Lonesome Crowded West that is like 10 minutes too long? That’s this but for 31 minutes. There’s a lot of cool winding crescendos, but not enough to warrant half an hour.

>Live at Stubb’s 7/2000
Fuck. Yes.
Like I said in the last review, Ween hated this album because of the gorilla quality and release without their approval. It seems that Ween was almost getting back at Electra by releasing this on their own label, “Chocodog.” Stubbs is better than PtTB in almost every way: Song choice, recording quality, and just fun in general. Stubbs has pretty much all of the best songs you can think of from pre-Quebec era Ween, and I was happy more songs from Pure Guava (my favorite Ween album) made it on here, as well as some choice selections from the Mollusk. This version of “Ocean Man” and “A Tear for Eddie” are of the best I’ve ever heard. This is a must for any Ween fan.

ALSO: This is purely speculation but Christgau shat on GodWeenSatan, saying they “went on about pussy for nine minutes (good idea) in a Princey blues-minstrel drawl (bad one)” referencing the song L.M.L.Y.P from that album. I don’t think Ween cares about some old fuddy-duddy who cares much more about lyrical content than song content, but I kind of see this as a revenge of sorts, since disc three of Stubbs is THIRTY SEVEN FUCKING MINUTES of LMLYP. Shit shows the chops of practically every member, and the length is much more warranted as an XL-size Ween track. Just amazing.
9

Also, it’s worth noting that Claude Coleman Jr., Ween’s drummer for both albums (and since 1994) is fucking fantastic, and really only shows his fantastic chops live. If you want a really diverse and dynamic Ween experience, please try one of these out.

Fuck, I really need to see Ween live.
>>
>>65425496
i had no idea Ween had so many obscure tapes
>Poopship Destroyer
>>
>>65425734
The first three are the tapes they made in their basement before GodWeenSatan, but a lot of tracks like "You Fucked Up" and "Bumblebee" were originally from there, but are a million times better on GWS. Not worth it even if you like their early stuff honestly.

The "Demo" section is pretty much just a few extra songs and worse mixing of already existing tracks. Glad I'm at the live part now because this shit is real nice.

Also, that's how the song is listed on the CD, not my doing, though it is three words on Pure Guava https://www.discogs.com/Ween-Paintin-The-Town-Brown-Ween-Live-90-98/release/507318
>>
>>65423975
I like Marc Maron's podcast. Has a lot of filmmakers, musicians and comedians on, if you're into those kinds of interviews. Radiolab and This American Life are also nice.

>>65424305
I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes it. Hopefully he'll start making weird albums again.
>>
>>65423699
Today I spent a bunch of time listening to small bits of just about every album pitchfork reviewed within the last week. I guess to just get a feel for what the quality of an average week's release is. Since /daily/ is /dead/ right now I guess I'll share my thoughts on these half-listened to albums.
So here are reviews I wrote based on skipping around and listening to bits and pieces of different tracks:

Debo Band - Ere Gobez
11 piece Boston based Ethiopian pop group lead by a saxophone wielding ethnomusicologist.
On their website the two first things you see are the band, mostly white, which you might not pick up on since their genre is Ethiopian pop, and they look like what would happen if you just suddenly transported 10 random NPR listeners into a room. The second thing you see is a quote from NPR saying “…riotous energy and sinuous swing.” While the band is very very NPR they’re music is still pretty enjoyable even if not incredibly interesting. There’s some decent accordion though and it kind of reminds me of zydeco or something, so I might show it to my dad.

The Underachievers - It Happened in Flatbush
I could picture enjoying this while drunk at a party, but not otherwise. Generic kinda fun party rap.

The Hotelier - Goodness
My goodness what boring emo. I mean if you think emo is good you’ll probably like this, but I’m not into it.

Africans With Mainframes - K.M.T.
Techno musician Jamal Moss, or Hieroglyphic Being, was the man who made my one of my least favorite albums of last year. This wasn’t particularly bad or good. Acid house done weird. The pulsing on some of these tracks kind of gave me a headache. Probably best not listen to through headphones.
“Qustul Artifacts”
“Meroitic Script”

Classixx - Faraway Reach
House music. Aside from the first track, which is sort of nice and summery in a way, it’s pretty bad.
“Grecian Summer”
>>
>>65426419

Robert Glasper / Miles Davis - Everything’s Beautiful
Didn’t give it a full listen, but I thought it was neat. Interesting attempt to translate some of Davis’s work to hip hop and R&B. I think I might check out some of Glasper’s other stuff. I think the album is in some ways hindered by being a film soundtrack, because some parts feel flat and uninteresting. The remixes weren’t particularly good. Some tracks like Right On Brotha were really hindered by a small poor choice (like that fucking beat), I don’t need EDM Miles Davis.

Autechre - Elseq 1-5
Much more aggressive than most of the Autechre that I’ve heard, which was kind of interesting. Some of the territory felt well tread in, but that’s to be expected for Autechre. But at a run time greater than 4 hours I couldn’t take the idea of listening to the whole thing.

Rebolledo - Mondo Alterado
Weird as fuck techno with some spoken word vocals. Really emotionless and detached but also kind of funny and ridiculous. Sounds kind of like the soundtrack to The Terminator or something, but with spoken word vocals about love said with a mexican accent. The cover says it all.
“Fears Come True”
“Dance Warrior Dance”

Olga Bell - Tempo
Hmmmm. I can’t tell if this is pop music or experimental music. Holly Herndon does a better job of this type of stuff.
“Ata”

Pup - The Dream is Over
…I like pop punk. They use a lot of the same elements on each track though, it would help if they switched things up a bit more. Also the teenage angst/anger gets a little tiring. I bet they’d be really fun live though. “You” is “Yaheeeewww” for these guys.
“DVP”

Kristin Kontrol - X-Communicate
Kristin Welchez of Dum Dum girls. God I’m such a sucker for ridiculous synth pop like this. Sometimes it gets a little too radio for me though.
“Show Me”
>>
>>65426451
Daniel Romano - Mosey
Ontarian mother folker.
Just because you look like Bob Dylan doesn’t mean you have to pick up a guitar and try. This is a quirky little country record with a lo fi garage rock type aesthetic sometimes reminiscent of an old western. I don’t know if I’d call it good.
“Sorrow (For Leonard and William)”

Angel Du$t - Rock the Fuck on Forever
Bass-y “fuck erggg punk ghrrrr we swear and talk about fucking” type hardcore. Kind of has a pop/grunge sound. Doesn’t have the speed or intensity to really be great. The bass-y-ness makes it feel really slow. Pritty shitty.
“Rectify”

Minor Victories s/t
A guy from Mogwai, the girl from Slowdive, and a guy from Editors. I guess I should know who Editors are but I do not. Anyway, this album sounds like what you would expect given the people playing on it. Sort of shoegazy post-punk-y and cold-wavy. Kind of reminded me of Beach House. Pretty gud. Also Mark Kozelek Shows up on the track “For You Always” where he sings one of his distinctive rhymeless rythemless rambley stories. I might listen to this in its entirety.
“Cogs”

Speaking of Kozelek…

Mark Kozelek - Mark Kozelek Sings Favorites
If you like Mark Kozelek then you already know this release came out, and if you don’t like him, you aren’t going to start liking him by listening to this. It’s just him playing piano and singing some classic songs. Literally just him and a piano, and occasionally some backing vocals. Don’t bother with it.
“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

Beth Orton - Kidsticks
Pretty weird. “Singer-songwriter” meets electronic music. Not much to say because it’s not very interesting.
“1973”

Flume - Skin
:P nahhh. About an hour of EDM-esque production held together by features. I was never that big a fan of Flume, but there was at least a time when his music didn’t sound dated. These beats sound 5 years old.

Wew maybe I shouldn't have posted all of this.
>>
I probably should have proofread that at least a little bit :P

what kind of old fart hates LMLYP? that song's one of the best on GWS.
and fortunately i think they're touring again with new stuff on the way. unless one of them dies. knowing this shitty year, it's a decent possibility.

Christgau. He's a great writer sometimes but man does he have the shittiest opinions.

Also, I'd been looking for what this instrument for MONTHS and never knew exactly what to look up because I always assumed it was a stringed instrument for some reason. It's always used in the background for a lot of less-than-traditional Japanese songs, but I could never remember the songs I'd heard from wherever to ask "what's this instrument?"

Anyways, finding it cheaper than $1,000 isn't proving to be easy, so maybe I can find a guitar pedal or something that has a similar effect? Idk.

Anyways, it's a really beautiful droning sound, and if you know of any music that has it feel free to rec https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzpN0AsMMvo

Not really. They're similar in tone maybe but not in playstyle as far as I can tell. Accordions aren't really used in the "drone" fashion while the sho is pretty much entirely background filler + crescendos, so I know I'd love shit like that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoKP-o-cXak

Good morning, /daily/! TAFKA Movenglut here. Today is going to be more intense heat, more studying and more music. What are you going to be reading and listening to today?

>>65428657
Fuck, I love dub in the summertime. Been blasting King Tubby and Keith Hudson these last few days. Thanks for the share, man. I need to get on that digital dancehall vibe again. The Bobby Digital dudes again.

Oh man, now you have got me all worked up! Good thing my girlfriend is not home yet, she does not enjoy dub as much as me.

Also, inb4 FISH says I should just listen to Fishmans.

Improvised Music From Japan: Final Thoughts

Disc 7 was a fucking nightmare. There were some interesting moments at the end of the third "Improvisation" movement, otherwise total garbage.

Now Disc 8 was probably the best one I'd heard in a while. Nikata Bushi fucking shreds and the long ass track by Michihiro Sato was only 10 minutes longer than it should've been.

Disc 9 had a couple of weak tracks in a row by Masahiko Okura but then OH SHIT /DAILY/ MEME MAN HIMSELF PETER BROTZMANN STEALS THE SHOW. Seriously, Disc 9 is worth it if you really enjoy that dude, just for the last few songs. The Junji Hirose tracks on here were also pretty choice improv piano and I think those will probably be overshadowed by Brotzmann by any future /daily/ listeners.

Disc 10 wasn't that grand either. The two shorter tracks by Kyoko Kuroda & Kazuhisa Uchihashi actually had a lot of beautiful and surprise moments. Definitely some more choice cuts. The last two 20 minute tracks are definitely nothing worth it, though. Shits so boring and uneventful, which is actually a great summary for this whole ordeal.

For me it's a 6/10. There's a lot more too this than Onkyo and EAI, though that does take up the bulk of it. I think most listeners will probably be bored by it unless they have a supreme love for those genres, in which case absolutely pursue this compilation. There's also a bunch of free jazz, minimalist compositions, traditional "Japanese" instruments (I say this because they pretty much stole all of them from other Asian countries) and a whole lot of other interesting shit.

This could also be a great starting place for someone looking to get into Onkyo or EAI. It features a lot of the big names where someone could easily say "hey, who's that? I'd like to hear more of that" like I've done. Honestly this could be amazing as just three discs with all of the choice cuts taken out.

Final verdict is that this is one of the most interesting comps ever, but not worth it for me.

I was never a fan of The Offspring but then again, I have only heard their hits. And I also cannot stand pop punk. But I am willing to give them a chance. I will add that particular Offsprings album to my backlog and listen to it at some unspecified point in time. Maybe I will experience another Korn moment.
>>
>>65429952
honestly it might even edge out Smash as their best album. They kind of pulled an Eminem where their first album is pretty dark, before getting kind of goofy but amazing, before turning to ass later in their career
>>
>>65430140
My real question is; if I hate "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy", how far can I realistically go? This all depends on whatever I like their debut record, that is.
>>
>>65430175
You can pretty safely go from their debut s/t to Ixnay the Hombre, when they were still close to Cali punk and didn't go full skater-pop-punk.
Try Americana and turn it off when it starts to annoy you. If you can make it through, you can give Consipiracy of One and Splinter a try.
Don't bother with the rest.
Rise and Fall is okay, it has a couple neat track but it starts to go mellow and boring. Days Gone By is a bore from beginning to end.

>Jandek - Canticle of Castaway

He’s going to eat your soul cause he ain’t got none.

An acoustic CD with 3 tracks. 53 minutes.

Don’t Go Out starts with some very jumpy guitar strums. The usual “Jandek” special. Howling voice returns once again. Urging us not to leave. Why? Because everything outside looks too normal and that seems to be freaking out our protagonist. I like how he states that the outside world can be perceived as a “passing montage”. He doesn’t want to go anywhere. He doesn’t want to pay the bills. He wants nothing. There are some moments in Smith’s delivery that are soft enough to qualify for early Jandek (“float me out there” line is a good example) but in general it is more howling than anything. At 17:30, Smith plays the most violent solo he has ever performed. HE RIPS those strings. The track ends at a half an hour mark.

A shorter track “You Weren’t” lands as the second one. Pace of the guitar is pretty fast, packed with Jandek singing out small syllable words. The track is about imagining someone’s love/commitment/whateverrelationshipmatterheistalkingabout when it actually isn’t there. Abstract terms used all through the tracks.

The closing Boys Like Blue is 17 minutes long and continues in the same vein of the album. Apparently different people like different colors but boys prefer blue. “Somehow, they always do”. Smith just stacks up different coloured things into the track with occasionally interesting phrases (“divorce from the city”). I felt like this track has elements of biographical nature. More of an associations game really. The track felt very long though.

OK album that tends to drag at times, but that solo on Don’t Go Out was cool. Too short, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

6+/10

In general, I really like King Tubby as well. The Roots of Dub is a great concise record. Obviously, I like King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown then. Playing It Cool we already namedropped.

I am not super deep into dub but I have consistently enjoyed almost everything I have heard to a varying degree. I have yet to hear an Upsetters record, though, but I hear that Super Ape is another go-to dub plate.

There is also a bunch of reggae albums and digital dancehall stuff that I dig but I cannot remember everything off the top of my head now.

Because I'm not done with adding all the album covers to the chart, here's my """review""" of the Even Oxen s/t with the album cover as the pic.

Even Oxen - s/t

Mhm, this was some gooood stuff. Though some melodies on the song weren't quite the thing, I thought there were some interesting ideas and really cool experimentation here. It seemed like there was a neat mix of influences here which I enjoyed. My favorite part of the album was the unexpected noise on Pasture Grazing. It was a really weird surprise that caught me off guard and I loved it. Nice work on this one, Bear. 3.5/5.

well I wrote a quick review for an Another Sunny Day EP but then I realised that i would take a long time to write for all releases
should I post it?
actually, I am gonna post it anyways

>This is an EP by jangle pop/twee pop band Another Sunny Day, I’ve hear that they’re great so I decided to check this EP out. It was released on 1989, and it’s their only EP. I have only listened to the first song, and I really liked it. (It sounded a lot like The Smiths)

The first song is You Should All Be Murdered. The guitar at the intro is incredible, and the bass is comfy, just like it should be. The vocals remind me of Morrissey’s, that’s a good thing. The chorus is so damn good though. There isn’t much to say about the song, apart that it’s incredible. If this would be The Smiths, it would be their best song.

Another Sunny Day also sounds a lot like Beat Happening, but more 80’s sounding. The vocals aren’t as good as last song. The lyrics are pretty good too. The bass is pretty good. When he sings “So very grateful”, he sounds a lot like the singer from The Chameleons, or maybe The Sound. So yeah, this is simply put a great jangle song.

Finally, we have Green. This one is incredible, just a little cheesy. I really love the vocals though, they’re really comfy. He sings so damn good. The drums are a little repetitive, but that’s fine.

Sorry, I took a pause to listen to the first song again, it’s just too wonderful. Seriously one of their best song i’ve heard. I liked this EP for it’s ability to give us danceable tunes mixed in with comfy basslines and soothing vocals. This has to be on my top 5 EP’s, ever.

I’m going to give this a 9.3/10, god what a good EP. I’m going to listen to more Sarah Records releases, they sound incredible.
I posted that for my music blog by the way
>>
>>65432363

Menomena - Friend and Foe:

Extremely catchy but instrumentally dense pop songs. The saxophone worked into some of these songs (Air Raid particularly) flows surprisingly well and adds an extra layer of depth and provides a unique timbre. I'm always a sucker for a saxophone. The biggest problem I have are the vocals that annoyingly remind me of angsty pop punk bands, some songs are worse than others, but I think the songwriting makes up for it on most occasions. Lots of ideas explored, just overall fun alt rock album. The percussion is killer as well, the rhythmically pulsing "Running" is aptly described from the title. A short track propelled off the bat by increasingly tense drumming, the choral ending was neat too. The album really picks up in the second half. There is a spark of grandeur in the one-two punch of "Boyscout'n and Evil Bees," the pair of songs presenting foreboding melodies not present on the first half. The two songs that follow are no less engaging, and are often pretty dark with the track "West" offering some of the best vocal performances- shaken by the weight of their own music a la Joy Division.

Favorite songs: Air Raid, Running, West, Evil Bees

Been trying to listen to more OMD and Kraftwerk lately. Also, been getting into more Tom Waits. Anybody have any recommendations for that kind of late night, jazz club sound that's on Nighthawks at the Diner?

I can't remember if I have reviewed this or not. I pretty sure I did and I liked it, seeing that I'm enjoying this.

Also does anyone have any noise rock to recommend? I'm looking for something that leans more towards the noise side than the rock side.

Album of the Week
>Wet - Don't You
Really nice - thanks again to nyar for the recommendation. Check this out if you like female-fronted dream pop.

>Westminster Cathedral Choir - Lobo: Lamentations
Nicely done Renaissance choral pieces. The Hyperion label continues to crank out quality releases

>Zhenya Strigalev - Never Group
This features one of my favorite drummers - Eric Hartland. Good upbeat jazz here

>Antwood - Virtuous.scr
One of the more memorable electronic releases from recent months. I enjoyed this one

>Fahir Atakoglu - Live at Umbria Jazz
This one features my favorite drummer of all time - Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. I saw him play live about 15 years ago with Michel Camilo, and he is amazing. Dude can play 5 separate rhythms simultaneously. Here he is again putting on a great show.

it's a no responsibilities kinda sunday, so i've got a lot of listening to do!

Harry Belafonte - Calypso (1956)
>calypso

Belafonte has always been a bit of a hero of mine with his activism, but I've actually never checked out his music, so here we are. Two of the songs here I actually know very well, "Day O" is the song from Beetlejuice and was also sampled by Lil Wayne in the song "6'7'" ([spoiler]which I actually like[/i]), and on it's own it's still a really wonderful song. It's basically just a work song that's about 10x more upbeat than the average work song, and I love the percussion. And I very distinctly know "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)" from the "Treehouse of Horror II" Simpsons episode where the Simpsons get super famous from the monkey hand and everybody hates them and they record a calypso album, so yeah I like that song too. The rest of the songs are good, but just way too...simple, I guess. There's really nothing interesting about the songs save for the really cool percussion. It's incredibly pleasant and nice to listen to, but I just can't see myself ever putting this on to listen to in full, it's just kinda bland music. Very solid, but still kinda bland.

Well, I enjoyed the preludes. Although Chopin wrote them not only to serve the function of a prelude but also to be pieces on their own, listening to all of them on a sitting doesn't seem like a good idea either. Nonetheless there's a lot of variety between the pieces and these are mostly pretty short, which helps. Pretty stuff.

>The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Very middling album, so basically The Beatles doing what they do best. Lennon's vocals sound tinny, inhuman, and mediocre on this album, while the instrumentation is slightly psychedelic, but ever so safe. The singles at the beginning of the album are fine, but I never found them to be standouts in the Beatles discography by any stretch of the imagination. The middle section of the album, meanwhile, is a very mixed bag, with a few ok songs and some absolute bullshit. "When I'm 64" and "Good Morning Good Morning" have no right to be on an album that is supposedly one of the best things of all ever (although it really isn't).

"A Day in the Life" is great, of course it is. This album would be among the most "meh" Beatles albums were it not for that track. 2.5

Bad Religion - Suffer (1988)
>melodic hardcore, skate punk

I only listened to this yesterday cos I got home at like 10 and felt the compulsive need to listen to something new, and this was only 26 minutes, so why not? Well, it sucks. I don't know what the fuck I expected from a "melodic hardcore" album, but this is basically the same exact shitty pop punk song repeated 15 times. It's not catchy, the vocalist sounds bored as hell, and it's just shit.
