It's the 3nd of May (Yeah fuck you this is for real)

Listen to your library, show off your backlog, babble about new music, tell us what you have been listening to today and what you will listen to in the following month, just let the good times flow.

i didn't like a lot of the material, in fact none but the Carissa's Weird track stood out to me, but sshx's mix was more well put together and consistent (though i'm thinking all too consistent) than moonjacques's, which kinda seems just like a random assortment, again sans real standouts

that means imma make another comp with you in mind

tho i'd have had a more fun (and easier to assemble) idea in case patchy

>>

Uh I found it too disjointed and offering too little interesting ideas basically. This didn't change after a relisten.

literally all i did was look for every song i had with that same track length ayy.
whatevs thouh, now you have a good challenge ahead of you! I'm excited to hear your sshx-inspired mix honestly.

>offering too little interesting ideas
I'd say it's a pretty damn interesting album but alright

I personally just find it fun as fuck and really like how chaotic it all feels yet pretty organized at the same time

it's also really cool how much shit I missed the first few times I listened to the album that I started to notice the more listens I gave it

ah well

different strokes for different folks

I think I'll spend the rest of the day making music and watching X-Files. I feel inspired.

Hellsing OST: Raid
caught me off guard, expected it to be some spooky scary scooby doo music
it was 100% more psychadelic than I expected
some of the tracks don't really land that well, but it's pretty nice altogether
don't really have anything real interesting to say here

Meredith Monk - Dolmen Music
I have an enormous respect for vocalists having grown up in a family filled with drunk Irish singing (the best kind), and the vocal melodies and harmonies created here are some of the best I've ever heard
it's a tad goofy though

Keiji Haino - Tenshi no Gjinka
This was pretty nice
very different from what I'm used to from him
especially liked track 5, although it was too avant for the librarians who said they could hear it from over the other side of the room,
It had me in a trance though
eagerly wanting to relisten to this

Melt Banana - MxBx, 13,000 Miles at Light Speed
something's missing and I can't quite articulate what
it's missing the usual punch from a studio release of that time
really dug Surfin USA though

The Native Hipsters - There Goes Concord Again
yeah man, pretty nice
very scattered and schizophrenic, probably need to relisten to it, I don't feel like I've fully digested it

The Chameleons - What Does Anything Mean Really
quite nice, liked the bass, as always, didn't really dig some of the melodies here much though, they felt like odd choices for the music, like they didn't fit
"In Shreds" is a straight up perfect song though

so far TCB has good taste, what next?

maybe you should listen to more actual classical instead of that nerdy stuff on your chart
you could even have french stuff
>>
>>64557529
Honestly I'm listening to whatever I want lately, as in not really following chart. I've only listened to one record for the tournament and I'm taking the torts & socks chart real slow because I don't feel like forcing myself to stuff. I might not make charts for a while after those for that same reason.
Anyway Ravel has my interest and I wanted to do it this weekend. Other than that, I'm open to any music if you have any suggestions.
>>
>>64557647
you should document those in a freeform chart so us nerds can see what you are listening to :)
you would probably like these memes:

Schwarzwaldfahrt is neat, gr8 drumming from Han.
As for the quartets, I am planning to do them (I've listened to the first two). I had a chart and all but instead of doing it by CDs I decided to them by order and couldn't be arsed to change it. I'll probably finish the early ones and explore some other early stuff of his (I think symphony 3).

I might do a freeform chart if I'm not too lazy then.

very abbreviated synopses

Abida Parveen - Visal: Meeting Mystic Poets from the Hind & Sind (2002)
>qawwali, kafi

earth shattering vocals and instrumentation but every song is the same, guess that's kinda what qawwali albums do.

3.0

Atheist - Elements (1993)
>progressive metal, technical death metal

an improvement over unquestionable presence in terms of technicality, but the songwriting took a massive hit. p alright jazz influence though.

2.0+

Pulp - This Is Hardcore (1998)
>art rock

wonderfully written pop album with phenomeneal theatric vocals. too long, but still great.

3.5-

Sade - Love Deluxe (1992)
>smooth soul, sophisti-pop

cheese, but pretty good cheese. even if the opener eclipses every other track here.

Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per un amico (1972)
>symphonic prog, progressive rock

Nice and pleasant prog album. Lots of melodic tendencies for the genre, and it pulls of this picture of more standard pop songwriting with prog song structures pretty well, even though a lot of the abrupt style switches seem awkward and a bit tacked-on, especially on "Il banchetto". I can dig it, though.

Something is kinda off about it innit? Like at first I thought "well it's not more bloody Four Tet worship at least" but like the orchestra really does nothing to the song, it's just flavoring.
>>
>>64560601
Really? I thought Thom's singing was a bit clichéd, in delivery and lyrics, but the rest of the song was pretty good. The sharp string playing was especially nice. I suppose the vocals were so high in the mix that it really could bring the song down if you were annoyed by that.

Not their best work, but certainly not "holy shit terrible" by any stretch of the imagination.

>Pale Cocoon - 繭
This sounded more like I should enjoy it than I actually do. That is to say, I certainly did enjoy this quite fair amount, but it's more like a weird mix between a pop album and an ambient album (it's not an ambient album, but the lack of real standouts and how everything just seems to flow into each other reminds me of ambient). It's all very pleasant, though, except some tracks try to emulate a spooky sound and fall flat. Almost a 3.0, but not quite. 2.5+

>Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Shahbaaz
oh yeah those are some vocals and that's some percussion. Love the energy. 4.0

>The Sounds Stylistics - Play Deep Funk
Funk is only sporadically great, and this album removes that which could make funk sporadically great to begin with. Is the result bad? Not by any means, but the focus on instrumental grooves rather than actual songwriting can only please to some degree. It plays like a house record (and looks like one, too), except funk wasn't made to be house, yeah? It's fine, really, but don't knock on my door with that deep funk shit again, I get the idea, I'm kinda ok with it, but it's something that fundamentally seems to be ok and nothing else. 2.5-

>Chuck Person - Eccojams, Vol. 1
Runs an idea into the ground, but at least the idea is nice enough to make the album good regardless. Looping and distorting pop songs, primarily from the 70s and 80s it seems, to create new songs/sound collages. The result makes for a seriously nice listen, but when the gimmick of looping an old songs to create a new song keeps repeating itself, you start wondering what's it really all for, yeah? So basically, uh, cool and all, could have been worse, vaporwave is a decent meme, this is probably the best the genre has gotten, please give the meme a rest, it's dead, yadda yadda. 3.0-

these are the kinds of reviews that piss me off, you create some little comedic diatribe in order to antagonize people to mask the fact that you can't articulate any of your criticism. You can plug in any song and band into that scenario and it would work the same, so really that "people like that should die in a fire" remark is useless.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Grand Opening and Closing (2001)
>experimental rock, avant-garde metal

There are a few moments here where there's a really cool mixture of experimental soundscaping and weird-ass metal riffs, but sadly these moments are few and far between compared to both the meandering industrial pastiche bits and the Patton-esque, absolutely horrendous freak out bits. The industrial bits are actually kinda cool, but when it goes full Patton it just becomes unlistenable. Shame, because there are a lot of good ideas and some good execution here.

John Coltrane - Giant Steps (1960)
>Hard Bop
The drums on this are really good, the piano is just okay. Coltrane's sax is kind of underwhelming and especially at the beginning and end it goes nowhere and is too meandering for my tastes. It picks up a little in the middle, but like I said, drops again at the end. A shame because a lot of the playing is really nice.

K maybe

Anyway, first pair of reviews from me

Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
More fun and memorable than their first two, which were solid. Feels like something genetically engineered to mimic the steely dan sound with maximum hooks and funkiness. Feels a little too clinical/constructed in a couple places. At one point in "with a gun" all the pieces seemed to un-gel and I could tell every instrument was recorded separately. Ruined the immersion. But fun and exciting overall. 3.5

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
I'm never too excited about ambient but this was enjoyable. Not tedious, kept me engaged. /mu/'s only thoughts on it are "Zeit is their best" and I think this is the first ambient record to make me want to explore further, so I'll check that out. 3.5

Getting started on that 1001 albums list...

>Frank Sinatra - Songs for Swingin' Lovers
Tried giving Frank another shot after being bored by In the Wee Small Hours, but this didn't really do anything for me either.

His style seems very formulaic, which is probably just be a product of the time, but it sure doesn't hold up. Most every song features a swinging big band accompaniment to Sinatra's nonchalant singing. About two minutes in, the band crescendos with some horn fare and he sustains a loud high note to close out the song. None of the tracks really stood out, but I suppose "You Make Me Feel So Young" has a rather enjoyable swagger to it. It helps that it's the first song, so it hits before the monotony of the whole thing rears its ugly head.

Glad to see someone getting into 1001, I hope you like it.

Sinatra's great background music but awful foreground. It's not built for what I want to get out of music, I guess. I agree that that album and the other both lead with the only great track. Unintentionally unfair. The other Sinatra I've had to listen to was no better, but no worse. Pic related is pretty consistently comfy though, and a different genre, so maybe you'd feel better about it

Peter Broderick - Float (2008)
>ambient, modern classical

Stunningly pretty sometimes, really sappy and far too much like a shitty movie score at other times. I like when it's just simple piano work, but it just gets so overblown and cheesy when the other instruments get brought in. This style of ambient has been done so much better.

2.0

>>64567534
you're goddamn right. it's incredible.
>>
>>64568118
It's very interesting. Currently on Wild West Virginia. I think the super loud piano is a bit much but like I respect it on the other hand, like that's the point of lo-fi recording right? To distort familiar sounds into something more abrasive? Anyway I think I'm slightly too suburban to completely relate across the entire album.
>>
>>64568248
if the piano's a bit much, check out his 1990 album. it's mostly guitar and the bits with piano are toned down a lot. and if you like songs of pain, he's got like a dozen albums just like it, but all with their own unique quirks
>>
>>64568303
I have heard some of his other records, my favorite song from memory is Story of an Artist, but idunno I think my initial peak fascination with him came around the same time I was exploring R Stevie Moore and Wesley Willis and I was just more drawn to those artists. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Moanin' (1958)
>Hard Bop
People mostly mention Drum Thunder Suite when praising this album, but I think the other tracks deserve just as much praise. The drumming is (of course) phenomenal throughout the whole album, but the thing I like most is that it's so clear that this album is lead by a drummer. All the instruments sound very rythmic and that really adds to the dance-y feel this album has.

This gets a +.

You should get a cheap harmonica if you haven't already. It's fun to sit on a bench and play, and if you put a jar by your feet you might get money. Acoustic guitars and concertinas can get you girls as well, but they're not as easy to lug around.

Ground Zero - Consume Red

Bloody hell. This was fantastic. I wasn't sure if Ground Zero could make an album I'd love as much as Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Version 1.28 but they did. The build up here with repetition and droning sounds was excellent and I was engaged the whole time. I loved the noise, I loved the constantly repeating sax, I loved the bleep bloops and turntable fuckery, I loved the drumming, damn it I loved everything about this. 5/5.

>>
>>64575394
Yes but the average short album is like 40 mins and the average short movie is like 1.5 hour. You couldn't read an average book (~300 pages) in that time.
Although people who are really into film doe sometimes speak of film of the day and I guess we only speak of album of the day because we are so into music.
>>
>>64575394
Oh and if you go to /r/literature, they have a biweekly what have you been reading thread. Most people have read about 3 books in that periods so they'd probably speak about book of the week too.

how does that have any bearing on the album I heard
Like if I were to buy a copy of this, it would most likely include both of those track because singles are silly and don't exist anymore
Fugazi did the same thing with Repeater + 3 Songs

The average album is shorter than the average movie. The average movie is shorter than the average book, independent of reading skill. Factoring in reading skill, the question becomes even more ridiculous. Doing some quick Google searching, I found that the average novel seems to run anywhere from 70,000 to 150,000 words and the average reader can read about 200 words per minute with about 60% comprehension (apparently "professional" readers, in the top 1%, can read up to 1,000wpm with 85% comprehension). With some simple math, it should take the average person anywhere from 6 to 12 hours to read your average novel, and even then, only understand just over half of what they've read. I expect if you read a lot, however, you would greatly increase your reading comprehension and reduce your reading time.

One of the fastest and most prolific readers I know is retired lawyer and literary critic Michael Orthofer, who maintains The Complete Review literary review website and reviews 250 books per year, and this is his full time job. (If you're ever looking to get into foreign works translated into English, by the way, he's your guy.)

Even more fundamentally, music is a lot less attention-hogging than movies or books. Movies especially, considering those require undivided attention of sight and hearing. Also, movies and music have fixed consumption times, while books depend on the skill of the consumer.

>>64576735
Best House is the best song on Sleep Cycles. Hope you enjoy that at least.
>>64576637

>Flying Saucer Attack - Flying Saucer Attack [edcvghjklpoiu]

I really can't help it, i'm a sucker for music like this. Basically noise pop, but it doesn't cater to the wavy and smooth pleasure that for example loveless strives for: the distortion is heavy but not RIDICOLOUSLY heavy, and the songs under it are some spacy fresh rock. Also some very tribal drums dominate the record, especially on the two more ambient and calm tracks (which i didn't like as much but they're pretty good). 3.5 [WINNER]

>Arto Lindsay - Noon Chill [jimmyjazz]

Genre-wise it's an interesting record. Percussion-heavy bossa nova, but it doesn't really feel spanish (even if some songs are sung en espanol). It's consistently enjoyable throughout but it doesn't have a lot of peaks or for that matter falls, apart from the song Simply Are, which is incredibly dancy, poignant and lyrically interesting track. The way the words touch with the instruments just makes me want to move. 3.0+

lov both of you! edcvg i hope you show up soon.

This is undeniably beautiful. The sounds themselves are more beautiful than the progressions are, but it's hard to not like something this pretty.

This gets a +.
Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Ensemble - Dreams
>Avant-garde jazz, jazz-pop
The actual jazz parts on this can be nice, especially the slow saxes. The poppy bits however, are very lost on me. The vocals don't fit the record imo and a lot of the instrumentation on the poppy bits is too sickly sweet for my tastes.

This gets a ~.
