This is where, I believe, Trip-Hop actually became what it is. The blueprints (pun very much intended) were there already, but I think their debut was closer to a sort of downtempo, artsy instrumental-and-not-so-instrumenta hip hop rather than a proper trip-hop release.
After the rather crude but still charming and pioneering Blue Lines, Massive Attack (arguably the progenitor of the style) releases what is still considered one of their best, if not their best work (to me it is definitely the one with the highest replay value). The raw late-80s electronic sounds/beats have been brought to contemporary (for the time) standards, the music has taken an extra long step away from its acid house/hip-hop roots, adopting elements from a gamut of electronic music ranging from ambient house to dub, and the samples have become more eclectic and better mixed, creatively used both as standalone sounds and as part of greater textures. The production and mix were such an improvement and set such an example that it would take the band an extra four years to try to top themselves (some would argue they did, I remain unconvinced even though I love Mezzanine).
As if that weren't enough, the lyrics have also gone through an insanely fast maturation process, and the singing is noticeably less cheesy (the singing in the title track sends shivers down my spine, while the flow on Karmacoma is top-notch [and those tuvan samples urghrhghghnfg]).
Anyway, this is, like, THE most elemental trip-hop album ever, along with Portishead's debut, so you should either know what to expect, or start here if you're interested in this "trip-hop" business kids keep yapping about.
