Allo Darlin' - Allo Darlin' (2010)
>twee pop, indie pop
Its /really/ cute, and has a nice, longing teenage vibe to it, but its just not very good from a songwriting standpoint. Twee pop needs more than stark adorableness to sustain an entire 40-minute long album, like melodies (Trixie's Big Red Motorbike/Belle & Sebastian), fun (Beat Happening), or energy (Twa Toots). All Allo' Darlin has is cuteness.

Nails - Abandon All Life (2013)
>grindcore, powerviolence
First 9 tracks are standard and unremarkable grindcore, but that closer is something special, my god. Its so heavy, brutal, thick, rhythmic, its great, definitely Nails' peak as a band so far. sshx vs rodriguez
i thought it was fitting to change the matchups, considering both of you created dj mixes, wheras trish and zugz made best of comps
>sshx
+ i appreciate that you tried to create an emotional arc (upbeat ->mellow -> sombre)
+ i appreciate that you paid attention to bpm, as you should if you want to make a proper mix
+ i like that you chose to end on a high note
+ i really like kyary
+ i really like shiina
~ me i would have switched the bowery electric and loveliescrushing tracks around, maybe broadcast's and sweet trip's aswell
- actually loveliescrushing were the low point of this, nothing really happened and it disrupts the flow established by the first three songs
- also the crossfade leading out of that track seemed kinda awkward
gimme another!
>rodriguez
~ even if it's likelly you worked just as many tracks into it than sshx, they sounded like less, if that makes any sense, which i suppose i coulda listed a good thing just as well, but
- most of this is very unexciting background ambient/drone/berlin school, not my thing at all
- the mix doesn't really "go anywhere"
+ until near the end where it sort of picks up with one or two moments that got my attention
- but it's too little too late
Film section is filled. I have pre-made charts for krautrock, drone, 70s industrial, top 100 jazz and throat singing which I will use to fill the freeform chart (mostly because I don't want to do only one genre and I don't want to keep posting 5 charts).

>GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords
This pretty much improves upon 36 chambers in every way. The beats are fantastic and the flows are solid. The guest features are great too, it's pretty much just the wu-tang clan but the way they play off each other is great. I like the recurring samples from the samurai movie, it gives the album a cohesive feel to it, which is pretty nice
8/10
>Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex
This wasn't too bad. I like the sinister atmosphere that it creates and maintains throughout the album, but I feel that it's just pretty inconsistent. The songs build up and get more intense without reaching a climax, which I dig a lot, it's just a shame it doesn't quite work as well on some tracks, like "Lee is Free" as it does on others like "(She's in A) Bad Mood" and the cover of "I Wanna Be Your Dog".

Dirty Three - Ocean Songs (1998)
>post-rock
Fucking gorgeous, even if it is boring at times (I couldn't think of a better word than that, shut up). But honestly, its more subtle and subdued than boring. The violin/viola work, hnng. Compared with the drums its so ethereal and pretty, I love it. The longer tracks drag like hell though, its apparent that Dirty Three works well in smaller, bite-sized doses, which is pretty idiosyncratic for post-rock.

Fela Kuti and the Africa 70- Expensive Shit
>Afrobeat, Jazz Funk
This album feels a lot jazzier than Zombie, and I like the heavier jazz influence more. The base to both of the tracks are repetitive grooves which are played over primarily by Kuti's saxophone, and what I think the real highlight of this album is, the piano, which provides a ton of beautiful grooviness to the album. The vocals on both tracks are alright, but aren't important because they appear for about 2 minutes in the entire 24 minute affair. The length is probably my biggest problem with the album, as it feels a little short, being only two tracks that are about 12 minutes long each. Overall this is a really good album, and I would say if you've never heard Kuti before, listen to this over Zombie.
4/5
The Stooges- The Stooges
>Hard Rock, Proto Punk
Right off the bat, I was very impressed with Asheton's guitar playing on this album. The guitar solos here are amazing, powerful and blazing like a sparking wire. As hard rock songs go, 1969 and No Fun are some of the best, but this album also does non hard rock very well. One of the album's highlights is the A side's closer, the drony monolithic We Will Fall. For most of this album Iggy Pop is showing off his vocal range with shrieks and submissive, depraved yelping, but here he maintains a monotone as he delivers spoken word, backed by chanting and some psychedelic guitar noodling reminiscent of Planet Caravan, which slowly gives way to John Cale's viola. This song feels a bit like a precursor to drone metal, especially the Sunn O)) song Aghartha. The biggest gripe I have with this album is that, aside from the earlier mentioned No Fun and the submissive ballad Ann, the B Side is very forgettable.
3.5/5
why is this album so overrated? it just drones on for what seems like ages

what I'm listening to this month
Reposting because this was ignored last thread.
Every once in a while, you meet an album of which you really don't know what to make of, despite its critically acclaimed status and its appeal being explained in-depth by merely looking up some of the reviews. Lift Your Skinny Fists is one of those albums.
Having listened to this for four times now, there were only brief moments sporadically scattered throughout the four tracks. The songwriting is brilliant and how it plays with otherwise convenient post-rock structures, there is plenty of variety, the production is clear and precise. The presence of good musicianship and a successfully achieved vision is undeniable - it would seem foolish to claim otherwise.
But I'm just not feeling it. I would really love to, but I feel like this really stretches itself out for longer than is good for itself, despite being composed in movements in a fairly classical fashion. There is definitely an "ooooo" factor present that will pull in anyone who has an even fairly open mind to ambient music. But I guess I'm just not one of them. As much as I can appreciate and respect it for what it is, and the people behind this intricately crafted album, I guess this one is just not for me.
For those who love this, but didn't have it click right away: when and how did the click with this happen?
>>64167726
do you like other post rock? maybe less in this vein of crescendocore?
I don't like that one a lot, but I'm curious what else you heard
>>64167500

idk, I just kinda fell in love with it the first time I heard the trumpets kick in on Storm. do you enjoy any other instrumental music? did you not feel anything during those climaxes?
regardless, Antennas to Heaven is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.
>Daniel Johnston - More Songs of Pain
It's part two of the best Dan Johnston album, what else could you ask for? You've got the usual bunch of sad songs, one or two upbeat tunes to lighten up the mood between all the pain of this album, which sounds like it'll be unfitting but actually works along the rest of the album, and a few other random things, like a cover of You'll Never Get to Heaven. Phantom Of My Own Opera is easily one of the best Johnston songs, hands down. There's also lots of versions of Grievances in this album, which I don't mind because it's probably his best song. There's also more clips of his mom screaming at him, which I love because it really adds to the sadness and pain of this album. The first one is still better, but this is still worth revisiting. The last few songs are a bit of a mess though.
>Charlemagne Palestine - Schlingen-Blangen
Feels like it goes on forever, and in this case it's actually a good thing. I don't know why, but for the first half hour of it, even though I was liking it, it felt so long and tiring, but when it finally came to an end, it sorta left me wanting more, thinking: "Wait, that's it? The album's over?" But I think that if it went on for more it would've reached the point of feeling extremely monotonous so maybe this is the right length.
>>64167797
I haven't heard much in all honesty. Closest thing to post-rock that I know is probably Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On, which I loved.

Thanks but i feel like i should really be discussing music instead of doing this shit
i mean mu is a music board and i am just shitposting here so i will post my thoughts on ghost production ghost production is really lame imo it is affecting the music industry big time it is like a plague like some sort of well of fame that you can just buy from and hope it reaches the top it is often produced to be exactly to the liking of the general crowd and blends in so well that it will be instant hit material or i dunno how to explain it basically that shit is just dumb
i think skrillex is really a ghost producer himself despite the rumors of him having his music ghost produced for him i remember when /mu/ tried to make people believe skrillex was ghost produced by silverstein or some shit that was really funny
back to business though it is unfair and allows the rich to basically buy their way to fame and it is because of this reason i cannot listen to most of the edm shit being thrown out there because well maybe it is produced by just one guy like almost all of it or probably a group of people working together like max martin usually has 5 hits in the top 40 AT ALL TIMES this guy is an absolute madman and he has a whole team of guys to back him and whatever he does it is ridiculous fuck that shit
i mean his production and songwriting are probably still a step above most pop music but generally i despise him and even though i do i am going to pick up his book i think it was called the song machine or something like that it basically described the key to his success and maybe i will produce something that will do well
but enough about me what do you guys think of ghost producers and do you think it has reached beyond the extent of edm because at this point anything might be fabricated by those fuckers i hate it and want this miserable trend to end

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Architecture & Morality (1981)
>synthpop, new wave
Minimal, sparse beats and synths coupled with great melodies and melancholic vocals. It sometimes gets a bit too sparse and meandery for its own good, like on "Sealand" or the title track, but it hits pop perfection a few times, with the "Joan of Arc" duo and "Georgia". Good stuff, overall.

I thought this would be offensively horrible after hearing the lead single "Do It, Try It" and its not. Its inoffensively horrible and horrendously boring and plodding. There is nothing memorable here. Not a single note. Not a single vocal quirk. Not a single synth flourish. Not a single melody. Its all so MOR, so boring, so insultingly generic. What the fuck happened? I actually like Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, and "Midnight City" is a great pop song. Did Gonzales think that switching this hard over to pure pop would work? Because it didn't. At all.

Cause it's EXXXTREEEEEEMMMEEEE BRAAAAAHHH don't you get it?
Could you guys do me a favor?
There's this band I've been involved with (not in though) for almost four years. They've been making this album pretty much that whole time and I've heard these songs so many times that it's impossible for me to tell if these versions are any good at all. If one of you could listen to at least a few tracks, I'd really appreciate it:
http://grandchampband.bandcamp.com/
Favorite tracks are "Backporch" and "Through-A-Loop," though I don't think I could judge them properly. I know I should be posting this in a BC thread or something, but I just value your guys' opinion on this stuff a lot :)) Also, it's funny to note that their "first album release" show last week was also their final show after being a band for over four years. Funny how that works.
They sound sort of like early Weezer or Built to Spill, but with a bit more whiny Midwest Emo feel.
>>64175744
I think you especially might enjoy a few of these tracks.
>>64175961
They're definitely a bit more emo/math-y than what I enjoy, but it's pretty good so far. The female vocals on track 2 were unexpected. I like a good male/female harmony.
The horns remind me of Lambchop, maybe Sufjan. This is a nice record. I'm only on track 3 but I enjoy it. Mixing is a little odd, but not in a largely detrimental way.
>>64175961
What's with the difference in quality between tracks 2 and 3?
Track 2 was all over the place and pretty unsatisfying. I'm guessing the background vocalist is probably dating one of the kids in the band, yes? A few cool-sounding sections, but the mixing felt off.
Anyways, Backporch was fucking fantastic. Pretty blown away actually. I felt like the sax(?) was much more necessary instead of a thing added after the song was written like Keep Me Where I Am.
>And those goddamned Christmas Lights!
I definitely feel the Midwest Emo lyrically, but don't really see the Weezer. Maybe B2S though.
How old are these kids? I'll probably finish this album if I have time tonight.
>>64176332
>maybe Sufjan
they were definitely influenced by the dude.
>Mixing is a little odd
I thought this too. Please let me know what you think when you decide to stop.
>>64176347
>background vocalist is probably dating one of the kids in the band, yes?
not really but close I guess
They were like 15-17 when most of the stuff was written, but 18 now that it's released.
>>64175961
I also feel that the vocalist is trying to do a lot of things with his voice stylistically and it isn't always in his best interest
>>64175961
You're from Des Moines I'M Fish?
I was there like two years ago, your city is empty af, but it's got a cool vibe.
Ate at that zombie burger place and went to a record convention, picked up some dope stuff.
>>64176379
The hi hat is definitely mixed too loud. The closed hits seem almost deafening at moments. Also the bass drum is dull. Muddy. Unimposing? It's actually hard to distinguish it at times. The hits are not exactly detectable, but you can tell it's happening at some point. Maybe the drummer just has a light foot? Just finishing warm lights btw.
>>64176492
In fact, the hi hat is louder than the other cymbals
What the fuck
>>64176401
yeah I don't mind the dude's vocals, but that's definitely their most criticized feature.
>>64176406
>your city is empty af, but it's got a cool vibe
Literally nothing to do: the town: the state: the section of the US
Zombie Burger is fucking rad. I haven't eaten there in a few months but it's always packed and tasty.
>and went to a record convention, picked up some dope stuff
the one at the Holiday Inn? We were probably in the same room lmao. I've been there almost every time. They have one every few months and I always get some ridiculous finds.
If you listen to Grandchamp eventually, lemme know what you think!
>>64176492
>>64176512
Their drumming has been through a lot. They had an EXTREMELY talented drummer who was fucking fantastic. She eventually moved to Cali in the middle of their album being made, so they replaced a lot of her parts, but they weren't that great. Plus, the dude who was mixing it put it off for several months and set back their release date significantly. I don't know much about mixing, but it's some pretty sad stuff :/
>>64173746

if you were there in 2014 I was there as well, picked up a copy of Ultimate Spinach, that alone is enough to grant the city at least a B+ in my book
>lemme know what you think!
I listened to a few tracks
just first impressions
Not really my favorite style, I'm sort of over the whole midwest emo thing (can't you guys do anything else??)
Playing is aight, I like the horns and backing vocals when they're present. Songwriting ain't bad for sure, but nothing really jumps out at me as a stand out track.
Like everyone else said, the mix is all over the place. It's not terrible, but it sure is distracting, especially since it doesn't even seem to be consistent song to song.
drumming is a little weak at times but hey, so is B2S's and they're hella good.
>>64176613
I was trying to embrace the meme but I am clearly not very good at it.

>>64176633
>enough to grant the city at least a B+ in my book
we are a solid C at best man. I once got the box set of Joe's Garage in 2014 for a pretty decent price there.
They have some pretty hype Power Pop-y riffs, so if you're into that definitely continue. Quality really picks up after the first two tracks imo.
>>64176642
>I was trying to embrace the meme
I am so proud of you my dear Morg. I love you. Don't you EVER be negative again <3
>>64176676
I am into power pop, and I only listened to the first three tracks, I'll pick it up in the morning
>>64175961
Something else that annoys me is that the vocal to instrumental mixing is so inconsistent. A lot of the time it's really lo-fi sounding guitar with really clean studio-quality vocals, while other times they're not really as stuck out as other tracks.
Then again, this album did go through development hell, so its main problems imo are mostly just a result of that.
>>64176533
That's pretty disappointing to hear about the drummer.
I hate to say it but this long work in progress is still just that. Needs one person mixing from scratch, and would benefit from re-recording drum parts.
But what do I know? I'm some guy on the internet who hasn't ever tried to compose or record my own music, ever.
>>64176705
aye cool man.
stay square ;p
>>64176712
Yeah she was the one part of the band most people noticed when they played live. She was REALLY talented. They argued about mixing shit for years. I don't think it's really completely solvable but probably could use some improvement.
>>64176676
>Don't you EVER be negative again
I try my hardest never to be, thanks for noticing. :-)
Now I am done with Dark Souls, time to listen to Senzuri Champion again, maybe I can get a review done while on the train.
Why is /daily/'s taste so fucking childish? I listened to Escape From Noise by Negativland and The Ziggurat by The Constructus Corporation and they feel like something I'd listen to when I was thirteen. Does listening to so many albums turn your brain into shit?
>>64177684

>>64177754

>>64178255
Yes! There are a few memes, but they are easily spotted.
Nyarlathotep: The Harmonys - Cats Are My Friends
I am so sorry but I dropped it. I just could not dig the country influences on this album and felt that the other elements of the album weren't strong enough to drown out the country. I apologise for being a dropping plen. Nyarlathotep does not advance.
yamir: Smegma - Glamour Girl 1941
This wasn't quite what I expected. I didn't find it incredibly interesting or enjoyable but rather boring at times honestly. I still think it had some neat ideas here and there. It was an okay album. Sorry I didn't end up liking it as much as you do, Yamir but hey, at least I didn't drop it. 3/5. Yamir advances.

Reckoning
Hey /daily/friends
What are you listening to? Any recent recs?
While I still have time before lunch, I'll type up some thoughts on my today's listen Cool Jojo. The record is basically Masayuki Takayanagi playing cool jazz. It reminded me of Wes Montgomery a lot and that might have something to do with the similar guitars they used. If you like Takayanagi's noisier releases that heavily rely on free bursts of improvisation, this is not what you're looking for. It is a pleasant release nevertheless and the extra takes added onto the album were just as enjoyable as the rest. I thought the piano player did a heck of a job on East 32nd too.
My favorite track was track 3 for obvious reasons ;^)
Ok record with great playing but not too much appeal for me. I expect something different when approaching a Takayanagi record.

>Terminus x Rodriguez
Term recced 25,000 Kittens' s/t; an incredibly comfy warm drone EP. I wish they'd expanded a bit more on the lullaby that opens and closes the EP, but as it is it's still pretty neat.
Rodriguez recced Chlorine by Bruce Smear. This was an incredibly busy glitch hop(?) EP. It's incredibly well-crafted and manages to cram a huge variety of sounds into some short songs, but it lacks any sort of emotional punch. It doesn't sound relaxed but it doesn't wanna make me dance either, it's too busy to sit still too but also too busy to listen to passively.
Terminus wins!
>Mark x Feelist
Feelist recced Journey to Avebury by Myrinerest, one of David Tibet's many projects. It basically sounds like C93 does ambient drone with a focus on haunting piano. This was really good.
Mark recced Long Goodbye by Kinoko Teikoku, some rock solid Japanese shoegaze. These guys have a lovely sound, perfectly balancing clarity and grit, and they deliver some fantastically catchy tracks here. The obvious centerpiece here is Flower Girl, which beats Tokyo Shoegazer as its own shoegaze-thru-crescendocore game.
Mark wins, but by a small margin.

Transcendental Black God of /mu/ - Condensating Mess
Content aside, these selections are sequenced very intelligently: each track flows one to another intuitively, both through quality of sound and music (the punchy 1-2-3 opening) and through mood (the final transition from what sounds like alternative metal to yung lean). The tape has a definite arch, too, culminating in the exhausting 11-minute black metal (Liturgy, surely?) slog.
The track picks are pleasantly varied, though not distastefully so. Though unconvincing at first, the black metal marathon actually gathers credibility around it by the end, and I particularly loved the hardcore opening salvo. Other than these standouts the picks are not especially outstanding, but I suppose this works to the favour of the favourites. Great job!

Thanks again to everyone at /daily/ for encouraging my music. I honestly don't think I would have even attempted to make an album this early if it wasn't for you all. So yeah, if you ever get around to listening to it sometime this year I'd love to hear what you think of it. Mostly I'm excited just to be able to post with everyone more frequently again.

first impressions:
- the intro track came outta fucking nowhere and blasted my ears to shit; it sets the scene for Luma rather nicely though.
- Luma is still your best track, it's so fucking catchy and I love your vocals on that one.
- Cherubim is fine, doesn't do a whole lot for me but the tambourine is a nice touch.
- Kaiah's Connectant Ville is absolutely wonderful; it really has a sort of heavenly feel to it.
- My, My, My's main chord progression is absolutely lovely, the sparkly keyboards contrast your gritty guitar style rather nicely.
- Your Baileys of Water is pretty much just Holland, 1945 but that's not a bad thing; i'm not entirely sure about the distorted acoustic guitars though. kind of on the fence on this one.
- The Dragon on the Shore Beside the Sea, imo the climax of the album, is a trip. I was legitimately expecting it to be some sort of post-rock epic until the harsh noise wall kicked in. it does have a strange sort of momentum to it though, it's not as static and unforgiving as a lot of noise is and it keeps progressing throughout. i do wish the ratio "lovely intro"/"harsh noise percussion" would've been split more evenly but it ain't half bad as it is.
- the title track is so damn tranquil compared to that 11 minute monster, it works really well as a sort of epilogue. the rain sounds somehow really add something. you push your voice to the limit here, with kinda mixed results. some of the vibratos sound forced; i think your voice doesn't really benefit from those, sometimes even goes off key when you're straining. it works when you're being backed by a huge-ass wall of noise but with such a gentle track i think a more whispery approach wouldn't have been out of place.
overall, although looking back i just typed down a lot of criticism there, I fucking loved a lot of this album and the standout tracks are more than good enough to redeem its shakier moments. you did good.

you know, i actually really don't like that about Baileys too. It's definitely my least favorite song the way it all came out. I had the same thoughts for the title track, and actually I was planning on releasing the soft spoken version i recorded instead but this recording just means more to me due to the nature it was recorded in so i went with it. your criticisms are always welcome btw, refreshing to hear

I just love how everything plays out. The ideas are extremely clear & expressive, and it has a mood that is super uncommon for Bach but I think works really well with his style.
